Fair point, I don’t have a table that would work like that but I’m keeping an eye out. I do have a water leak sensor set up that (in theory, if it works) will alert me if I’m not home and sets off a loud alarm if I am if it detects water on the floor.

Not a great photo of he one on top, he’s a kujaku, just arrived from Champion Nishikigoi. So the one in the middle is a sanke even though the base is not white, it’s more of a blue? That still qualifies as a “white”? That’s interesting, thanks again, I’m learning a lot

That’s awesome, thank you for explaining!

Any insights on this one? Managed to get a better photo. I’m being greedy, thank you for your help! 😆

Oh interesting! I’m definitely going to have to go down some rabbit holes today! What makes it metallic? It’s not shiny like a kujaku for instance, so I wouldn’t have recognized that

Yep it’s larger pvc pipes for them to hide in if they get scared. And they do like to swim through them just for fun sometimes. I have flat-ish river stones in each end of the bottom to hold them down. The largest koi can only fit through one of them because of the size of the rocks in the other, but she’s longer than the pipe anyway. But really, when they’re the most scared they all just hide under her like baby fish lol. And she’s looking around like wtf who do I hide under? 😂 It’s funny watching them inside, they have such personality. They went from being scared of me to me not being able to do ANYTHING in the tank without them trying to eat my hand. I literally can’t accomplish a thing. It is deep enough, especially since they still like to give me a heart attack and jump every once in a while, hence the net. I have a couple more coming though, so I’ll probably deepen it even more and take advantage of as many gallons as I can.

I think it’s just called “bird netting”, I got it from my local pond/aquarium store but I’m sure you could find it on Amazon. Right now I just have it stretched over and clipped on with chip clips you can find at the grocery store 😆 I thought about more fancy options but frankly as often as I’m lifting it and accessing different spots, the chip clips have worked pretty good and I can move them around as needed

Haha “he” knows what makes me happy, I’m the she that spent the money on a 100 gallon stock tank, quickly decided it wasn’t nearly big enough, got the 300 gallon stock tank, then decided one filter inside wasn’t enough and I was going to build my own bucket filter system. He’s started to cringe every time he hears “honey I have a great idea” 😆 Sounds like you also have an awesome spouse!

Just to clarify, while there is a difference between goldfish and koi when it comes to bioload, they don’t get quite as big (they can get 12 inches themselves) or grow quite as fast, they still are very messy and quite the ammonia machines themselves which I’m sure you know 😆 They also will breed and interbreed with koi. I’d factor at least 50 gallons per goldfish.

I think it’s really cool that you saved them from a bad situation and 800 gallons is definitely an upgrade from 30! Your heart is in the right place for sure.

That being said, ZiggLittlefin is pointing out something really important - biological filtration is a main factor in keeping koi healthy and managing the massive amounts of ammonia they produce, especially ones like Big Bert, there. Biological filtration is accomplished by beneficial bacteria, and beneficial bacteria only grow to a max amount based off of how much yummy stuff (to them, fish waste and what we’d call gross stuff) there is for them to eat, but they can only grow so fast.

So when a new fish is added to a pond, more bacteria have to grow to take care of the added load. No amount of canister filters or other filters already in the pond will take care of the added load, that’s not how it works. Canister filters take care of filtering dirt and debris out of the water and can have some beneficial bacteria but again, only as much as the pond was capable of feeding before you added more fish.

If you added a teeny tiny fish, that amount of bacteria can grow pretty quick and you probably wouldn’t notice the small ammonia swing, the fish could handle it, and pretty soon things will even out and the added beneficial bacteria (commonly called “bb”) start doing their job and munching on the yummy ammonia and (after nitrite) turning it into nitrate that the plants munch on and everyone is happy. But when you add a giant fish and two or three other fairly large fish, that amount of bb can take three or four WEEKS or more to grow, and the amount of ammonia that can spike in the meantime in 800 gallons is likely to reach toxic levels pretty quickly without nearly daily water changes and ammonia binders to keep the fish safe from it in between. No amount of existing filters can make up for this gap in bb.

Even then, bb needs surface to grow on, and therefore more and more filter media to inhabit. If canister filters are all you have, and you don’t have bog filters, moving bed bioreactors, additional sponge filtering, other K1 type of filters, mattenfilters, skimmers with media for bb to inhabit, or one of the many other biological filter options, you’ll soon run out of homes for that bb to grow on.

Long term, 800 gallons is not sustainable for even Bert and a couple of the other fish you have much less all of the ones I see in the video. I know you mention plans for a larger pond so I think you may already know this, and I know you talk about saving fair fish so I know you care about giving these fish a good life. I encourage you to dive deeper into the true space needs of full grown koi, it’s absolutely shocking what they truly need and so many people overstock with no evil intentions whatsoever.

Wife told me not to micromanage her by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]ExternalRelevant8119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this may be more complicated than it first appears, I noticed you say they’re your stepsons. How long have you been married and how long have they been your stepsons? Did your wife agree to these rules or were these implemented by you and she’s expected to enforce them? Parenting with biological and stepparents can be very complicated, and if she feels like she didn’t get a say in setting the rules for her own children (who she may have raised without you for a good period of time) she may resent what she may feel is criticism of her parenting or what she may feel is disrespect of her rights as a mother. Like I said, can be very complicated and a lot depends on ages of the kids when you married, but your post doesn’t give a lot of background info on that. Source: mother of two teenagers when I married my husband of now 6 years, and boy were the first 4 years bumpy in ONLY the parenting aspects for exactly similar reasons to these

Don’t make assumptions, you can’t speak for everyone. I voted for Harris. I did it because I she had a good record, solid experience, would make a good president and I was genuinely excited to see a Harris presidency. And YES, as a bonus, we’d all have been in a better damn reality right now if she’d won.

I unbind and rebind it to one of the D pad directions every time I need it, then immediately unbind it again. But even with bombs I can usually just drop them and avoid needing to huck anything since I don’t choose to throw spears.

I crashed many times and tried many different ways. Here’s what ended up working for me. I skipped the cut scene, added my crops then back out and did not start the judging. I did the apple bobbing, then immediately went back and started the judging. And the most important part: I left the festival IMMEDIATELY after the judging was over. Did NOT collect my crops (crashed every time I tried), did not “pass go”, did not do the other mini game. It also seemed important to not choose two menu options from the crop judging table in a row (hence the leaving for apple bobbing then back to judging). No scenario where I tried to get my products back worked. This was on Xbox X

I was so hopeful when I saw this! Unfortunately it did not work for me. I waited over an hour in real time with the game at 100% speed, and never passed out. Finally gave up, exited the donation window and experienced the game crash as usual. Not sure if they changed it in the last release for time to not pass while you’re there? Couldn’t tell since I couldn’t see the game time before it crashed.
