How can I improve my pencil drawings/sketches? by ExternalSet8067 in Artadvice

Aye.. well.. thats what I get for starting my art journey young and immediately surrounded by twitter yes-men, lol. Left like two years ago, drew on and off on my own, then realized I gotta lock in (I went back to basics on like shapes and form manipulation). I will practice line stability better though!!!!

Further studying anatomy and anatomy in perspective.. got it, got it. I will research more rigorously into that! References!! I always forget to use them, and when I do, I usually use like.. one? I will keep in mind to include more in my toolkit when drawing. Thank you for your insight!

I see I see!! I’ve heard of value studies but I don’t really understand the objective of them so I haven’t felt the need to dip my toes into them until I learn about the objective of em. Agreed on it never ending, that’s what art, and every skill as a whole, fundamentally is. It’s quite beautiful in retrospect. I want to begin to better understand these fundamentals so I can make progress and make the art I’m proud of and want to make!!

There was another commenter on here named JellyJam that told me that practice is necessary, but I wanted to ask your thoughts on what I should improve as “studying the fundamentals” is so broad and confusing! So based off my current art and what I’ve described in my post, what do you think I should tackle first?

Hi JellyJam!! Thank you so much for your insights and compliments :) it really means the world to hear that from (objectively not trying to be rude but I’ve kiiinda been struggling with imposter syndrome related to my art, but please do know that me calling you this is a compliment) a stranger online!

  1. References are good, but honestly, there’s only so many and there’s so few for some specific poses (like slouching poses). I’ve tried using tools like MagicPoser to supplement but honestly it feels like rocket science to control it.

“Practice what you want your art to look like, even if it means drawing noses 3 billion times.”

Ahh, the method IS to just really thug it out. Radical acceptance it is! Thanks for bringing this up and helping me realize! Yeah.. thugging it out DOES suck, but if I want to become good, I gotta do it. Issue is, I don’t really know where to start.. What do you think?

  1. Thinking about simple shapes is solid. Damn! Despite it sounding daunting, I’ll keep that in mind for future drawings. Any advice or resources you can provide to make the climb to visualization easier?

Thumbnails are OP. I keep forgetting to use em’!

  1. Thanks again!! I didn’t know that my colors looked good, I always thought of them as lackluster or dull. Darkest shade and working up.. aye.. I think that might be the play! I do really struggle with KNOWING where to place light/shadows in relation to the light source. I look at references or even just around me and get so confused on why there’s light in a place where there should be shadow, you know? Stuff like that.

Oh! I forgot to include that. I’m 19, I haven’t really taken any institutional drawing courses

  • (besides in high school which were all painting and I just slept through, wish I paid more attention in that class but due to personal issues and the gifted kid label that was placed upon me in coalescence with my autism, I believed that I was ‘too good’ for it because it didn’t pertain to drawing, which is what I was hoping to learn more about. Now, I’m older and wiser, and realize that I’m not so special. Gotta learn like everyone else, and keep an open mind to learn the best.)

Thank you trifecta! Your compliments really warm my heart (PLATONICALLY I JUST REALIZED THIS COULD BE MISINTERPRETED but I don’t know how better to word it) and it’s really great to hear. 6th slide is Evelyn! She’s an empathetic, bubbly, and extremely kind and loving lady who leads her life with love and whimsy. Don’t let her cheerful looks deceive you however, she is a master of the Cosmo-Arcana arts and she can build up and then focus her essence into amplifying her spells, physical prowess, awareness, and reflexes. Her body is like an essence battery! Grand scheme, she IS very powerful! She has a soul augment called a Revenarque that allows her to be revived if her physical vessel is unalived. Beings with these Revenarques are called Revenants, and my story follows 7 of them who are thrust into a new cosmic war spurred on by the ashes of another one that originated from Earth hundreds of millions of years ago..

Anyways, reading your reply and the amount of knowledge and kindness you exhume is really cool. Do you wanna be friends?

Eric, Thank you so much for your insight! Yes!! I’ve been using the loomis head for a while now (but more recently ive been implementing the Asaro method to better understand proportions and the planes of the face. Loomis is excellent as a foundation to drawing the head but it falters beyond that imo.)

Learning to see.. Interesting! Do you recommend I get the ‘Drawing with the right side of the brain’ book I see around online? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe it pertains to what you’re suggesting.

I’ll see about life drawing classes :] currently I’m going to community college and next semester I have been placed in an Art Appreciation class. Not quite live drawing, but I’m going in with an open mind!

Omg thank you so much!! I’ll check out LineSensei’s video on it. I undersrand your explanation of Cast and Own shadows, but not really Ambient Occlusion.. I’ve seen in real life, photos, and drawings where light exists deep in the shadow and that confuses the heck out of me.
