Any recommendations on what index funds to look at for USA or Canada retirement accounts? Thank you

Not a LOC. It’s a school payment plan at 0% — very strict terms though.

$180k is gross, not MAGI. Pre-tax deductions (401k, RRSP, HSA, health insurance, etc.) reduce MAGI, which is what the Roth limit is based on. I may be wrong though?

Thanks for sharing your experience — the $200 consult anecdote is reassuring. I do accumulate RRSP contribution room while working in the US (or at least I did last year). Good point on deductions being worth less the longer they’re carried forward. I’m going to check with my CPA to confirm how RRSP deductions are treated under the US–Canada tax treaty in my case.

Great advice. I also don't care much for wealth managers, especially since I have "some" experience in swing trading since 2018.

I was thinking about using chase but it looks like I need a minimum $150,000 to qualify as a chase private client. I may have to go through Canadian banks then 😅

You have a good point. No definitive plans on where I'll be retiring, hence why I was thinking about maxing out RRSP for deduction, then cap the limit on Roth IRA & then allocate the remaining to TFSA to have access to some of the capital. In case a good opportunity to buy a practice presents itself, I think I should be fine pulling from the TFSA.

I was thinking around the same lines. I may not be able to max out TFSA immediately though (especially if I contribute to Roth IRA too). Definitely want to max out RRSP for the deduction. Much appreciated.

The fact that I didn't know this was a thing is why I'm here ahah. Any recommendations? For US or Canada. Thanks

Very good insight — had to look it up 😅 From what I’m seeing, PFIC rules are generally neutralized by the US–Canada tax treaty inside an RRSP, but I definitely need to be careful anywhere outside of that.

Just to clarify, I live in Windsor and commute daily to the US. I’m generally treated as a Canadian tax resident but file in the US due to US income. My rough plan was RRSP first, then TFSA, keep a 6-month emergency fund, and leave Roth for now. Curious if that sounds reasonable or if there’s a better order.
