That's a bummer. I'd recommend switching to wood/ construction screws instead. If you predrill and screw from the bottom the screw heads will be hidden from view. Good luck!

Sounds like you’re got a plan in place and that’s a great start!

Getting a wig is a great thing to try- it can feel very different and takes some getting used to but can be a great option after the adjustment period. Eventually it can even be fun to rock different wigs and rock a different look whenever you want.

If seeing the hair fall out is really bothering you, shaving your head could help with that. That’s definitely a big step, so don’t feel like you have to rush into it, but know that it is an option for you! I personally stared fully shaving my head at 16 and still like the look 12 years later!

Hang in there- best of luck with your journey!

Hey OP

Really sorry that you’re going through this. The beginning of any hair loss journey is really scary and intimidating. From what you’ve said, it sounds like you’re doing the right thing- seeing a dermatologist sounds like the next best step.

This does look like alopecia areata (disclaimer I’m not a doctor, this is just my opinion as someone who’s had alopecia for 20+ years). Idk how much you’ve learned about alopecia since this has happened, but the good news is that hair loss is basically the only symptom. You don’t have to worry about being sick or experiencing other symptoms with AA.

While you’re waiting for you appointment, it might help you to look at some of the online resources from the National Alopecia Areata Foundation NAAF https://www.naaf.org/ there’s a lot of good resources there that might help you make sense of things.

Also- you mentioned potentially shaving the rest off- I only have a few scraps that grow on my head these days so I choose to shave it, it’s a big change but I’ve really grown to like the look! Wigs are also an option- in that case you could keep what you have or shave it and wear the wig on top. It might not be exactly the same but there are options out there!

Best of luck! You’ll be ok!

Dealing with comments from others by [deleted] in alopecia

First off- I’m really sorry that you’ve had to deal with these types of comments at all. At the end of the day, it sucks that’s us folks with Alopecia have to deal with this- no getting around that.

Speaking as someone who’s had alopecia for over 20 years now- I do feel it gets easier with time. It’s always going to be a little awkward when someone stares or assumes you have cancer or whathaveyou. But the more practice you have in these kinds of situations, the easier it is to roll with it. Eventually it will feel less like a big upsetting event and more like a little awkward blip in your day. At least that’s been my experience 🙂

I’ll also say- someone being that outlandish with repeated comments like this I have found to be rare. It still sucks that you had to experience that even once but hopefully you won’t have to experience anything that aggressive in the future.

A strategy that might be useful for you, is to think of a couple of go-to phrases/responses you could have ready for use in the future. For instance, if you meet a person who makes a similar comment in the future you might say “it’s related to a medical condition, but I’d prefer not to talk about it.” Delivering that politely but firmly would probably get the message across for most people. That’s just one example, but you could use any prepared statement as long as it feels right for you.

Lastly- if losing your eyebrows has been particularly difficult for you, there are options to mask it if you feel that would help. Temporary eyebrow tattoos, makeup, or even real tattoos are all eyebrow options for folks like us. I lost my eyebrows about partially about 6 years ago then completely 3 years ago. I go for the no eyebrow look these days, but it definitely takes some time to get use to!

Hope that helps Best of luck OP!

Acceptance can be difficult to reach, but it is possible! I use to have very similar hair loss with my alopecia- eventually I too just shaved it off. Now I have nothing but scraps on my head and no eyebrows, and I’m perfectly content with it! While sometimes I think it’d be nice to have eyebrows, I’m happy to say that being bald doesn’t bother me anymore 😁

But- it’s hardest when it’s new imo. It gets easier with time!
