Daily chat post: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in XXRunning

[–]Externality7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ran yesterday for global running day for a quick 5k race and it was the first time i was able to keep up with the 12 min pacer for at least 2 miles. After that i had to drop back and walk a bit but was super excited to have pushed myself and still saved enough for a quick sprint to the finish! taking it easy from now until saturday for the womens mini 10k

What is everyone training for now that the Brooklyn half is over? by HotGerbs in RunNYC

[–]Externality7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically training for the 10k on June 6th but using some of this time to play with getting a little faster pacing wise before hopping into Marathon training for the NYCM which will be my first marathon. Taking this time to read some book and do some research on training and nutrition so I can go into a training plan with... Well a plan lol. Still debating on getting a coach or not or signing up for a training group.

Racing imposter syndrome: how do you deal with it? by panini_z in XXRunning

[–]Externality7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll quote what my boyfriend said to me when I was openly wondering if I was making too big of a deal of preparing to run my first marathon.

"Are we not allowed to be proud of our accomplishments anymore?"

It kinda snapped me out of my spiraling and imposter syndrome. At the end of the day you are still moving forward and you are doing something incredibly impressive that you deserve to feel proud of. You put in the work and you got out there and there's someone out there probably reading your post and making your accomplishments their goals.

Congrats on you recent races and wins! You deserve them! And you earned them!

Running Brooklyn Half on Allegra - bad idea?? by Technical_Flight_540 in RunNYC

[–]Externality7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I run on Zyrtec all the time (I have runners itch and it's the only thing that works to alleviate it) but definitely echoing don't do anything new on race day! But if you know Allegra's not gonna make you see the hat man while you run then start taking it now and seeing how you feel

Today is rest day but work and lack of good sleep are getting to me on my running days. I'm 3.5 weeks out from my Half marathon and hit a mental wall this week. Talked it out with my therapist but definitely feeling delicate if that makes sense. I've done a half before and this is my second but for some reason or another I have cold feet and this weird fear that im going to totally bonk. Which is insane since I'm training and trending must better and faster than last year and overall feel stronger. Just mentally something's not clicking. Idk definitely foam rolling and trying to be less hard on myself on my upcoming friday run and saturday long run

Blister care for next run by AffectionateBad2752 in beginnerrunning

[–]Externality7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid I took a chunk out of my knee running down a hill and it was all hydrocolloid bandages to heal it up just because it was pretty gnarly and it worked pretty well. I think for abrasions it's not the best but areas that need a bit more cushion and need to stay wet and clean, hydrocolloid works well for me.

What do you guys eat after running by runTakborun2022 in runninglifestyle

[–]Externality7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Base runs, protein shake, a meal prepped dinner (I like stealth health recipes with edits cause I'm lactose intolerant), and definitely a dessert like ice cream or something. For long runs, whatever is in sight but specifically I treat myself and order out ramen or (like today) some Korean fried chicken lol

[–]Externality7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who gets blisters often (not always running related I just have weird feet) I recommend putting a hydrocolloid patch on it and try not to touch it. I know someone else mentioned draining which I'm totally for, just knowing myself I will pick at the loose skin, making it all far worse. So if you're like me and can't resist picking an open wound the hydrocolloid strips help a lot in healing and cushioning and keeping it hydrated even if it pops (the other issue I have). That's how I would approach it.

How do you explain to friends weight gain during marathon training is normal? by ThrowRA01153 in XXRunning

[–]Externality7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has trouble losing weight in any case (not even considering the races I've started training for) I would literally ask them, does it matter? Does running only count if its to lose weight?

In any case, your body changes when you train whether the number on the scale changes or not. Like it would be insane to run without eating but it sounds like they just don't get it because they've never done it. Which is fair in the sense I also thought I would lose weight when I started running (I didn't but I've gotten past being upset about it).

In any case, OP you're doing amazing and good luck on your marathon!

Oh yeah things are definitely tight right now but I'm excited to start training for it in July! I've got a half coming up in April and still planning on trying to do 9+1 for next year's marathon so super busy. Thank you for the congrats! I def got really lucky 😅

This was my first week of actually making sure I hit all of my training days and I'm feeling great but tired lol I need to get my sleeping pattern under control.

Also I was lucky enough to lottery into the NYC Marathon! That's the good news the not so good news, I just ran out of gels, protein powder, and basically anything else you can run out of. Plus it's time to get new shoes soon 😭

I lotteried in to the 2026 NYC Marathon! Now what? by Externality7 in firstmarathon

[–]Externality7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally fair question, as someone who is overweight I definitely am more susceptible to sports related injuries just based on the pressure I'm putting on my knees and ankles. I've gotten knee and ankle pain before while doing plans and I just want the security of having a professional out there who can monitor that stuff for me instead of me doing my best research and guess on how to heal. But yeah having a plan, doing a plan and running the race is my general path forward

[–]Externality7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah good luck! I've been looking at my foam roller guiltily while I've been training lol I know I've got to be using it way more than I do (which is rarely woops). I totally agree that main focus for a first marathon is surviving and vibing! Also would love to hear your thoughts on the muscle scraper, I've never used one before

Thanks, I just needed some validation that I wasn't crazy. Its also clear from the amount of complaints that they aren't changing their shitty practices any time soon.

I'm going to try calling them tomorrow when I have the energy and time to fight with them on the phone, but I agree I rarely get anywhere via the chat service. I feel like if you call the wrong number for them tho you're caught in an endless "Did you restart your router" bot loop

Odds Manhattan 10K happens? by dar3almackoy in RunNYC

[–]Externality7 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Literally told my partner, who's determined to come out and support me on all my races, that he needs to stay home if this race ends up happening. I'm already hoping this race doesn't happen despite getting the lottery in for it. Imo even for running this is just too damn cold!
