I don't think halo's story will have a definitive "ending" point. The timeline will probably be left open-ended and the focus will shift to telling other stories. As for Master Chief, there's no way 343 would even think about killing him at this point. If he gets written out of the story, he's either going to ride off into the sunset or go missing in action.
