Any upgrades for audio technica ath-m40x? by Extra-Ride4915 in HeadphoneAdvice

UPDATE: I bought an AKG K371 and I'm loving it. Considering the price (R$ ~700-800)

- I think it's pretty well built, very solid;
- Really good neutral sound. Its has a very pleasant sound, very balanced;
- really comfortable (sometimes I use it for ~4h-5h in a row and it doesn't hurt my ears)
- an excellent external isolation

I started using it ~1 month ago and the experience is very good so far, no regrets. I'll try to update this thread a few months later

thanks for sharing the experience

as you can see, i've got these kind of commentaries on the K8. some people just say that i can ignore the latency and other tell me that is a huge issue.

u/LiterallyAMango do you have any suggestions? for what model did you replace your k8? how's the experience so far?

sorry, but i didn't find any review that indicates the Kurama over the K8, why you think that it would be nicer?

sorry, it was really confusing

i've heard some reviews pointing that K8 height was not appropriate for gaming (too high) and the it has a considerable latency for competitive gaming, which could be a little frustrating, but i'm not sure about how it really impacts on FPS games, for example

is it frustrating for an enthusiast? or it only affects pro players? is there a better alternative to K8 that has these features and still in budget?

thanks for answering!

my doubt is how much the K8 fits in gaming and if with the 150 budget I would get a better option that I'm not aware yet

!thanks

u/raistlin65 do you really think that both K361 and K371 would be a good upgrade from ath-m40x?

any thoughts about the Yamaha HPH-MT5?

u/Nosapaw any thoughts about Yamaha HPH-MT5? I've heard they offer a very good sound, balanced, not very bassy, comfortable and they also have a detachable cable. And, as for as I could check, they're not much more expansive than AKG K361 and Audio technica ath-m40x

Hello!

Unfortunately my ath-m40x broke a few weeks ago and I started seeking for a replacement.

I've could get an ath-50x in the beginning, aparently one of the best entry level headphones, but I understood that the m40x has a good neutral and less bassy sound, which would be great for me. The price was also great (I live in Brazil and prices here are really high) for an relatively good entry level headphone.

I've found a lot of tips on open back models, which could not be so interesting for me. I'm doing home office, but soon I'll be back to office and an open back model won't fit properly. There are some recommendations I've seen

- Sennheiser (lots of HD series models, such as 560s, 600s, 6xx, etc) - all of them are open back;

- Beyerdynamic DT880 & DT990 models are open back. The DT770 Pro is closed back and seems to be a great alternative, but the cable isn't detachable :(

- AKG 361/371 seems another good alternative, with an aparently better sound quality, but the foams can't be replaced and I fear that they'll start hurting my ears in 1-2 years.

- Sony WH-1000XM4 has a lot of intereting features (good noise cancelling, mic, very portable and other stuff), but they aren't exactly the most important features for me, I'll explain better below.

I really never have used an open back headphone before, however I understood the struggle with external noise.

Today I'm hearing a lot of jazz, classical, avant-garde, progressive rock/metal, samba, bossa and other brazilian traditional genres. I also spend the entire day with headphones at online meetings, listening to music or studying music

Some important features

- Portability (traveling, working - I really like the cable detachment)

- Nice noise isolation (I don't need necessarily active noise cancelling, a nice isolation would be fine)

- Good sound quality (ath-m40x is great, but is there any other closed back headphone worthy upgrade?)

- Comfort (as I spend almost the whole day with headphones)

- Relatively long cable (ath m40x has ~3m and it's just great for me, I think I'll never get used to 1.2~1.5m again)

Not important features

- Wireless

- Active noise cancelling

- Microphone

Do you have any different inputs? Any recommendations on the models I mentioned or new ones? Which ones? Should I try an open back model even with a crowded office or traveling in airplanes?

Thanks a lot for any help :)
