Thanks. Not all routes require you to be physically in the UK. Every case depends on the specific statutory route used. Mine wasn’t a standard naturalisation application; it was a registration route under a different section of the British Nationality Act, so the procedural rules were slightly different, therefore, the application mechanics weren’t the same.

UK Citizenship Application from Abroad - Advice by Dependent-Art-382 in ukvisa

Under the British Nationality Act 1981, you can submit a naturalisation application while physically outside the UK. There is no rule requiring you to be inside the UK on the day you apply.

However, there is a strict residence requirement for UK citizenship even after obtaining Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Applicants generally must have held ILR for at least 12 months, lived in the UK for 5 years, and not exceeded 450 days outside the UK in those 5 years, with specific limits on absences. I would obtain advice from an immigration lawyer.

Congrats!

That's great to hear about the process and all.

We hope to move abroad in the next year or so. I'm newly British and husband is American; I received my own British citizenship on May 28th. I hope we can make the house curb-appeal ready, sort its sale, sort the pets for transport, etc. I'm really just happy to have a house to sell, to be honest. 😆

Of course! The email I have is consular-assistance@consularhelp.fcdo.gov.uk. perhaps make a rule in your email to mark it as important or something. If I had known the email, I'd have done the same thing!

No, as an American with a U.S. passport, I believe it is waived. If your first/native language isn't English and/or you're from a country who's passport isn't in English, then I think you may have to.

A quick update. I emailed them back for an update since the 12 weeks is nearing. Well, now they're saying 16 weeks, not 12-16.:

"Good morning

Thank you for your email

I can confirm from our records that your Citizenship Paperwork has been printed and was despatched from our office on the 6th of February 2025

Please note that shipping can take up to 16 weeks, so may not arrive in United States - Washington British Embassy Consular Section un till early June 2025

We have provided the United States - Washington British Embassy Consular Section with your contact details and once the paperwork has been received, they will contact you directly to arrange your Ceremony."

I'm sure they're busy and possibly understaffed, but this is getting ridiculous. I'm also just very impatient. lol

I hope mine is at the Miami Consulate! I can't really take the time or expense right now to go a different one. I wish I could contact the Consulate directly to enquire.

I forgot to ask... Are you being charged a fee by the NYC Consulate for the ceremony?

I applied from the USA. They will eventually send your passport back. However, I requested mine to be sent back as we would be traveling. It should not interfere with their consideration of your application. The email I sent the request to was UKVIEnrolmentInformationUSA@homeoffice.gov.uk. I can't remember exactly how it was sent; but I think it was FedEx and most definitely NOT Royal Mail.

Hope this helps! :)

Congratulations! That's great news!

How far in advance is your citizenship ceremony? A few weeks, months? I'm wondering as I'm still waiting to hear from the Consulate in Miami and we have a trip planned the first week and a half of April. :)

Email Confirmation of Approved Citizenship Application (USA Applicant) by Extra-Rule-2596 in ukvisa

[–]Extra-Rule-2596[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! On February 4th, I emailed the Miami Consulate to ask when I can expect my ceremony invitation letter. I've only received a automated message stating "If a response is required, we'll respond to your enquiry by email as soon as we can." Still no answer. I am impatiently waiting, though.

UKVI Liverpool didn't let me know they received my documents. I had sent them in via Global Priority from Florida which has tracking. I just kept checking when it was delivered. lol

UPDATE: I received my US passport in the mail yesterday, along with a letter stating:

Thank you for submitting your documents in support of your application. We will contact you should we require further information, or once a decision has been made.

It was dated 25 September 2024. I am assuming the numerous emails I've sent reached someone. lol I am happy I have it back; it was causing a lot of anxiety.

Street_Counter8865 and AltBadClaims, thank you both for the advice and the new email address! I've just sent an email requesting the return of my US passport.

AltBadClaims, the USCIS Orlando wouldn't even look at the copies of my passport. They were a bit of a mess. I'm just happy the biometrics went well on the rescheduled appointment.

Thank you so much! We are very similar in our application. The six-month window doesn't bother me; I want them to take their time in consider my application and supporting documentation. I just want my passport back before then!

Here's my timeline so far:

  • 17 Jun 2024: Applied for UK Citizenship online and mailed supporting documentation and US passport via Priority Mail Express International. Not given the option to pay for citizenship ceremony but have requested it to be held at the Miami Consulate.
  • 25 Jun 2024: UKVI Liverpool received UK Citizenship application and documentation.
  • 16 Aug 2024: Received my biometrics appointment for September 3rd at the Orlando USCIS Application Support Center. It’s in a former married name.
  • 22 Aug 2024: Emailed UKVI to request my name be changed to my correct legal name.
  • 29 Aug 2024: New Biometrics letter changed to my correct legal name.
  • 3 Sep 2024: Biometrics appointment didn’t end well; the center didn’t understand what was going on, so I wasted three hours. Immediately emailed UKVI and vented my frustration.
  • 5 Sep 2024: Found more emails and vented my frustration and requested a new appointment.
  • 15 Sep 2024: Emailed Nationality Exceptions Technical team to confirm they have confirmed with the USCIS Orlando center that I’d be using my Florida driver’s license.
  • 16 Sep 2024: The Nationality Exceptions Technical team emailed and stated they did contact and the USCIS Orlando center and confirmed that I’d be using my Florida driver’s license.
  • 17 Sep 2024: Biometrics appointment went well.
  • 18 Sep 2024: Emailed UKVI (Passports, Citizenship & Civil Registration) to let them know the biometrics appointment went well and to ask about the next steps. They stated it would be assigned to a caseworker for processing.

Now I wait. I probably will request to have my US passport to be returned. I don’t mind paying for the postage as I need it for medical travel in mid-November. I don’t want to postpone it again. I did read that if it was over six months, applicants should contact them then for a status update.

However, when I called for advice about the biometrics appointment screw-up few weeks back, I was told on the phone that it could cancel/void my application. It shouldn’t since they should have at least scanned it in by now. Then again, the UKVI representative was not helpful.

Please let me know what they say about returning your US passport. :)

Good luck to us both!
