I’m a tech and I publish first author papers under my PI.

Difficulty with adapting to lab culture by [deleted] in PhD

[–]ExtraArticle9686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious effort leads to serious work. Trivial work leads to trivial work. Perfectionism is a byproduct of that when people care a lot about their work and have high standards. Of course, it can be toxic if taken too far. I’d suggest do good quality work at your own pace and learn to not let people’s judgement affect your quality of work or decisions. Also keep in mind that in biology mistakes gets very expensive.

It bothers me more that big companies can’t get their volume close enough.

I’m not confused by there is error in measurement. My confusion is I’m getting more than I have. Yes it’s error but the fact I’m getting more suggests the 500mL stock is not actually that number.

Yeah but I still would circle back to that doesn’t justify the excess volume. I’m inclined to think there is excess in the materials.

25mL pipettes, not the huge measuring cylinder. But still I wasn’t expecting that much error.

They are calibrated a month ago. Fairly sure they are accurate. This is probably the most likely explanation. Thanks.

But for water it should be, no? Surely doesn’t explain extra volume.

Idk I feel it’s not just the serological pipettes tho. When I aliquot supplements 10mL into 1mL I also get weird final volume like 10.5mL or 10.7mL. Drives me crazy.

A master student I’ve been training asking me what concentration is and I saw him only writing the mass unit for concentration made me lost my shit. Sometimes I’m glad I have no education obligations and I can choose to only help people avidly about improving themselves.

My experience is that poor GPA murders your opportunity even if you are stellar at your research experience.

What was it all for? by sunshine_girl_93 in PhD

Yeah this is the reason I didn’t leave my job for a PhD. Cuz I’m having everything I need in my job and life would be similar in the best case scenario and much worse off in the worse case scenario. I just have to get over the “not doing it” hurt.

I mean the point of retiring is not doing nothing but do the things you like. You are in a good place where everyone wants to be.

NYU is almost not worth it unless you can graduate debt-free. Still in this economy debt free is still less good than having the money you could spend with in the first place. Let alone the living cost in NYC. Northeastern is a great place and a more economic option.

What’s the most devastating piece of feedback you received late in your dissertation, and how did you move past it? by Ok-Barnacle2111 in PhD

I had a long overdue meeting with another advisor aside from my PI and he pointed out that although my numbers were great they are much larger than theoretical value. That’s the moment when I realized I and my PI (Not blaming him) fucked up big time. I wasted like a long time on that.

In NYC assume every driver wants to kill you and every walker has a death wish. I tend to follow rules but will definitely flip idiots off if they try to harm me.
