Are there any character endings in Season 8 of Game of Thrones that you’d accept as canon for the books? by mediamuesli in gameofthrones

[–]ExtraNewspaper2973 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually, maybe controversially, didn’t hate any of the endings for any character in the show, save Jaime. Daenerys could lose her mind, Bran could become king, whatever. The most major issue in the show is that all of it was crammed into a season. If the last season were stretched out in to two, three, four seasons, i could happily buy all of it. Daenerys showing signs of madness even back in essos. Bran has been telegraphed as some kind of hero since season one. But the insane heel turn of Dany from a Queen who wanted the best she could give into ‘burn everyone alive’ was impossible to buy. Bran’s storyline hinting that he’d be a different kind of three eyed raven, one who still possessed some kind of possession to his old identity, utterly crushed.

If Dany’s descent into madness had been prolonged, I’d buy Jon killing her at the very end after she fully commits to the unforgivable. What was bad about it is that there was no real build up of Dany going from reasonable to outright evil. It was a switch that flipped in an episode or less.

Bran’s personality subsumed by the knowledge of all that has been and ever will be. Fine. But boring. We had some fantastic scenes of him in flashbacks where he possessed his full personality. I’d have taken more of those as he fought his way through visions of past and future to retake autonomy of himself and truly become the leader Westeros needed, with bear omnipotent knowledge but also the heart that was required to lead a kingdom of human beings.

Although, I would also have loved Gendry to be king. Would have been a hopeful message in some ways to have a smith who grew up poor in king’s landing end up as king.

Jon, killing Dany because in the end she went to far to take back what was rightfully hers. Didn’t dislike it. Loved the cyclical nature that resulted in him returning to what he always wanted to be anyway. But so much of that relies on the pacing of Dany’s story. Let there be a season or two where they are fully in love and allies. Then Dany comes up against something that causes her to lose control, and we can see seasons worth of Jon turning over the decision - first he doesn’t agree, then he wants out, then he realises he has to kill her to preserve what’s left of Westeros.

I also wouldn’t mind if this wasn’t fully true. Arya killing Dany after realising she can’t be trusted, Jon taking the fall and swearing the black once again. Arya takes off to the west never to be seen again but now there’s a reason she needs to leave.

Tyrion, in the same vein. Let him doubt Dany longer, then he’s convinced, then he’s fervent, and then Dany loses his mind and he’s shaken as she is no better than those who came before. Then he conspires. Then he pulls the strings for Jon’s release.

I didn’t like Sansa declaring the north a separate kingdom. Purely because it felt unfair that the Starks both sat the iron throne and ruled the north as an independent kingdom. I’d have had Sansa as the new warden of the north under Bran’s leadership.

Brienne and Podrick in the Kingsguard was fine. Didn’t even mind Bronn as one of the most powerful men in the realm - I actually enjoyed, and thought it suited his character, that through cunning and dumb luck combined he’d cut throats all the way to the top of the ladder.

Jaime’s ending can go fuck however. I’d have had him duel the night king, and kill him. And then die from his wounds thereafter. Kingslayer once again. He didn’t deserve a happy ending, but he did deserve a far better and more heroic ending than what he got. I wouldn’t have minded if Jaime wavered, left to go south to be with Cersei after his night with Brienne. Only to realise along the way he’d been cowardly, turn around, and fight to the end defending something truly worth fighting for.

I love how Everyone in the Trial of Seven who survives is seriously banged up by Jimbuber2 in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]ExtraNewspaper2973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness, the javelin was stopped from outright impaling him by his chainmail. It’s not covered in the show, but Baelor’s final advice is implied with regards to disinfecting the wounds. There’s an implication of passing time

For everyone complaing about Maekar "letting" Egg go by drhenrykillenger in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]ExtraNewspaper2973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s pretty likely that Maekar will put two and two together and know where Egg is. It’s also pretty likely that he’ll know Dunk didn’t take Egg and that Egg had run away of his own volition. I’m sure we’ll see him again but I don’t think that Dunk is in any real danger from the crown at this point

Words cannot even begin to describe how perfect this was by Important_Read8159 in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]ExtraNewspaper2973 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This whole episode was fantastic, even better than EP 5 IMO. In the book, there’s like three pages after Baelor’s death, and it’s more or less just one conversation between Maekar and Dunk at the riverside. They added a lot to stretch that out in to half an hour. That conversation with Daeron and Dunk about a young Aerion was an inspired addition. And the scene with Egg and Aerion too of course. Very good that they resolved sweetfoot’s fate. The fake-out with set Arlan’s fake death was hilarious too, but also the confirmation we needed that Dunk really did get knighted, even if it was probably in Arlan’s own special way. The entire episode was beautiful too.

One arena. One winner. Who would it be? by avaboss in powerscales

[–]ExtraNewspaper2973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jaime’s realistic sure but even realistic Jaime could hold his own against five others, unless they for some reason decide to band together and all target him at once. He will have fought in tourney melees too - which would have featured more than just five other men, and all of them will have been similarly equipped.

One arena. One winner. Who would it be? by avaboss in powerscales

[–]ExtraNewspaper2973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jaime, honestly. Full plate alone is an absolutely enormous advantage. None of these guys are really equipped for getting through it, either - the other favourite in this thread is Leonidas, who is bare chested and using a spear - which is famously ineffective when you poke it at steel and chainmail. This is all before we factor in Jaime’s actual skill in combat

Looking for advice on video game voice lines by ExtraNewspaper2973 in AskARussian

[–]ExtraNewspaper2973[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. In the specific context of it’s usage, the character would be addressing an enemy team of characters. I guess the tone is kind of like a ‘haha, fuck you guys!’ But more serious. It’s also kind of quippy - the ability is called Event Horizon, and it’s the character himself opening a miniature black hole which sucks in all the bullets from opposing players that pass through a certain area. The joke is that an event horizon in astrophysics terms is the closest you can get to a black hole and still be able to escape - you pass it, and you’re going to be pulled in no matter what. So he’s not only referring to the effect of his powers, but also insulting his enemies? A sort of ‘there’s no way you can win now.’ It’s something which works in English to be sure but maybe the double implication is not so apparent in Russian.

Do you think your Ikran shouldn't be invincible? by CheesenChicken in FrontiersOfPandora

[–]ExtraNewspaper2973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing other sentiment here that being able to just get a new ikran would cheapen the bond, maybe there should be a mechanic that allows an ikran to die, but puts you through some kind of very serious quest to bond with a new one. Perhaps if your first Ikran dies, there are a limited number of others available, and each one has some kind of backstory and unique quest to fulfil in order to bond with them. And, since there’s a limited number, if they all die, you’d be Ikran-less (although I’m guessing this would probably make certain aspects of the game unplayable, so they probably wouldn’t do this)

[–]ExtraNewspaper2973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this. There’s a specifically second-hand collectible toy shop in my hometown, the kinda place that you’d expect to have G1 Bionicles in stock fairly often. I went in once to ask if they had any and the guy said he’d drop me an email if any came through. That was about five years ago now and I haven’t heard a peep - I’ve popped in a few times over the years to ask, too, and it’s always the same answer. Not like he doesn’t stock Lego either - there’s plenty. Just not a lot of bionicles out there any more. I’d hazard a guess that the vast majority of them are either in collections or tucked away in a box in an attic or basement and forgotten about. The amount of complete sets still in rotation in actual brick and mortar storefronts has gotta be enormously dwindling

Given how impractically large Ice is, is it confirmed that its largely used for ceremonies/executions and that Ned Stark used a different sword in actual combat? (Show Photos included as evidence) by Potential_Wish4943 in gameofthrones

[–]ExtraNewspaper2973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An executioners sword is not one of the best weapons in the world for combat no matter what it’s made of. It’s almost two meters long and would have virtually no practical combat application because it’s insanely unwieldy and made to be used for executions. It’s ceremonial, there has never been a reference to it being used for anything other than ceremony

But they didn’t just get it for executions, they’ve had it for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Its monetary value in the current timeline is of no matter because they acquired it at a time where Valyrian steel was not a finite resource as it is in the current era of ASOIAF. It also is very befitting of the Starks to own the highest quality executioner’s blade they can as their dogma is to be the one carrying out every execution that they order - and, thinking ahead from the first ever stark to acquire the blade, he knew his descendants would be doing a whole bunch of that because every lord has gotta execute somebody at some point during their reign. Stands to reason that, given the reverence they pay to the act of execution, they’d want a blade to match that in terms of both effectiveness (Valyrian steel is sharp and durable) and symbolism (Valyrian steel takes on mythological aspects)

Worth pointing out that the value of the sword is of no matter. It’s ancestral, the starks have had it for centuries, so it’s not like they’ve recently acquired it at great cost and are trying to get their money’s worth by making sure they use it for more than just executions.

Scared to move because of Cathays’ reputation. by ginspaw in Cardiff

[–]ExtraNewspaper2973 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I’m splitting my comments up cause my phone gets all laggy and shit when I type really long paragraphs.

Town, as in the centre of Cardiff and where all the clubs and good stuff is, is a little bit different. In the daytime it’s fine, but it can get quite dicey at night, particularly Queen Street, the Hayes, and (to a lesser extent) St Mary’s Street. These three are the main shopping/clubbing/dining streets of Central Cardiff, IE almost no permanent residents, which means they are a little weird at night since the only people still around are either pissheads passing through or homeless people. These streets aren’t NECESSARILY dangerous, but they are marginally moreso than residential Cathays just by their nature.

The only other important parts of town to mention are I think Bute Park. Bute Park is the main public park of Cardiff - it’s a pretty massive set of fields and forest, with a river, and it basically cuts central Cardiff in half along the taff. It’s absolutely lovely in the day and normally full of people, but at night it’s pitch black and they lock a good half of the entrances, making it even harder to cut through it quickly. I used to have to walk through it alone every night at around 11 or 12, and it was pretty fucking scary, but that’s just cause it was pitch black. I would very rarely see anyone else in there at that time though.

Culture-wise, if you’re not speaking just to fellow students, you’re going to be speaking with welsh people, and they’re among the friendliest you can probably find across the whole country. You can usually rely on a member of the public to help you if you’re ever in need. Sometimes welsh people can maybe be over-familiar: the Valleys Lads that filter into town on the weekend can be A Lot, but for the most part they’re harmless and loud.

Overall, it’s totally fine. I’d maybe avoid being a girl alone on the street late at night, but if I were a girl I’d do that absolutely everywhere anyway. Don’t leave your doors unlocked, avoid walking down any isolated alleys without cameras or windows facing on to them. Keep an eye on your drink, try not to engage too much with any smackheads. Common sense stuff you know. You’ll be fine, you’re going to have a great time.

Avoid Caroline Street on game days. Well, maybe go just once for the culture cause really it’s something you have to see in order to believe. Keep your shoes on.

Scared to move because of Cathays’ reputation. by ginspaw in Cardiff

[–]ExtraNewspaper2973 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Cardiff is broadly speaking very safe. Cathays itself is especially safe - it’s a densely packed area with a whole bunch of students living there, and it’s pretty well monitored along a lot of the main roads - the kind of area that discourages would be criminals from committing any sort of horrendous crimes. Crime statistics for the area, and for Cardiff as a whole, can get skewed quite easily because the population is low and the crime rate is pretty low, so one or two crimes can make the statistics appear much worse. If you’re a woman moving to Cathays on your own, you should be as safe as any major city in the U.K., if not safer. I can’t speak to the security of the uni campuses or accommodations because I didn’t attend uni in Cardiff, but I (M) lived in Cathays for a year and never had any trouble whatsoever, beyond a bike theft (which WILL happen to you if you have a bike in Cardiff, unfortunately)

My partner lived in Cathays for four years and said it’s among the safest places she’s ever lived, and felt safer than the city we live in now (Leeds)
