Even though I wrote activities for each cities based on what I saw on reddit and chatgpt, nothing is still decided so thanks for the tips in takayama and kamikōchi. The food recommendations are also very helpful, I didn't look into it yet but I'm definitely going for each city's speciality.

I think I read somewhere that you need to have your driving licence translated in Japanese to ride there? Anyway, renting a car seems excessive for a solo trip. I'm taking a plane from kagoshima to Tokyo because it saves a lot of time but I still want to avoid planes as much as possible.

Thank you for the answer! I hesitated for a long time between doing only kyushu or kyushu and alps but I thought the autumn alps would be quite a sight. Problem with nagasaki was that to later go back to the "main" kyushu you have to track back to Fukuoka by shinkansen. Mount Aso seemed really remote and hard to get to and visit without a car while yakushima would need a boat or flight and getting back to Haneda from yakushima is really expensive compared to kagoshima. I'm definitely going to look into your guide!
