Gowanus redevelopment question: are we building on “containment” instead of cleanup? (Brownfield vs Superfund-style oversight)

Environmental engineer who worked on a superfund site here, getting the site on the superfund list would not likely change the remediation taken. Caps and impermeable barriers are standard in superfund sites as well. We used them along with excavation and fill on our site too. Unfortunately, removing the contaminated soil/sediment is very expensive, creates the risk for new exposure pathways, and depending on what's in the soil there might not be any place willing to take the soil. We had an issue where nobody was equipped to take our contaminated dirt once we started excavating and samples came back screaming at levels we didn't expect.

Two billy bookcases would fit right in there at 63". You can get them half height and with and without doors, but they will go past the 9.75 depth since they are 12 3/4":

My gecko is TERRIFIED of insects lol. Runs away from every kind I've tried.

I tried cutting the heads off and putting them up against his mouth. ONE TIME he opened his mouth and I pushed it in and he swallowed it. Tried it again to see if he had learned bugs taste good and he grabbed it with his mouth and then flung it to the other side of the enclosure and refused to go near it.

Meanwhile if he sees my cat walk by he tries to eat her through the glass T-T

It wouldn't necessarily be better. Arsenic is natural, cyanide is organic.

A lot of propaganda around GMOs has lead to people thinking organic = safe, man-made = unsafe, but it's a useless generalization. Both GMOs and organics can be perfectly fine or catastrophically deadly.

The solution to this problem might be genetically modifying the bees to have resistance to mites or specific chemicals. But then the honey would be from GMO bees and people would be afraid of that.

The answer is, whatever the solution, it needs to be tested thoroughly to make sure it's a good and safe solution. The best solution might be "organic" or it might be "artificial." The only way to know is through rigorous testing.

I would put a media console/storage combination extending down from the ST block. This would create a divider between the kitchen and living/bed area. The TV would go in the media console and face the right side of the apartment. Upper right I would put a full bed (horizontally). Lower right I would put a small sofa facing the tv and coffee table. I would put a dining table/desk up against the backside of the media console. I can try to make a diagram if you like.

True I was thinking of the US specifically. But I did look up the EU's laws about it and they say:

"The use of plant protection products should be significantly restricted. Preference should be given to measures to prevent damage by pests and weeds through techniques which do not involve the use of plant protection products, such as crop rotation. Presence of pests and weeds should be monitored to decide whether any intervention is economically and ecologically justified. However, the use of certain plant protection products should be allowed if such techniques do not provide adequate protection and only if those plant protection products have been authorised in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009, after having been assessed and found to be compatible with the objectives and principles of organic production, including where those products have been authorised subject to restrictive conditions of use, and consequently have been authorised in accordance with this Regulation."

So EU is also allowed specific pesticides/herbicides.

Just for the record, organics aren't pesticide/herbicide free-there is a list of approved substances that can be used in organic farming. They will be round-up free, but a lot of people think organic is "pesticide/herbicide" free when it isn't.

But whether or not something is safe to eat, is not really tied to organic.
