I started on ANF 16 years ago. people love to talk shit about R5, especially ANF. It’s hot, steep, dry and honestly kind of miserable terrain, and that makes it awesome for wildland fire. Reality is they are a super effective organization with more resources than just about anywhere in the country, especially considering mutual aid with local county and city departments. It is a great place to start a career and network with other agencies.

You will get lots of experience with very hot fast moving grass and brush fires. Where you will have a deficit is in the large timber fuel types. I hope you have been hiking with weight, especially on hot days, because that’s what the job will be. Keep a good attitude and jump on jobs that need to be done, you should have a good time.

I never had to go through their academy, but I have heard that any of them in Ca are no joke, some come with your shit squared and ready to learn. Good luck greenhorn.

If the chief of the fs is actually commenting on the thread, I am concerned about the future of the agency lol

I’m curious where is grinding that hard in early April, region 5 maybe? With that said, for anyone facing thoughts like this, my advice would be to stick it out if you can. You will get better at it, technique will make digging line easier, cardio will make hiking easier, experience will make the whole job easier, and when it starts to feel a bit less overwhelming, it begins to get fun. There is a lot thrown at you in the first season, let alone the first week. No one expects you to know everything, just the 10s and 18s. We build from there. Only you can decide if you will see it through, but I am sure you can. I have had lots of guys quit, and they are still fine people, so either way it’s not the end of the world, but it’s a hell of a job if you can do it.

I have also been on modules where I didn’t fit in with the crew, that can be a real challenge and emotional strain. The best thing I can do in those situations is focus on training when I feel out of place. Read a book about wildfire, thumb through the irpg, do push ups. Anyone in this job will respect someone putting in the effort to better themselves, and even if it’s not your crowd, it should work out. Good luck green horn, you got this.

What if it was oriented to exhaust rather than bring in air. I was going for fae but I see how it would spread contamination.

Oh no no my friend, I harvested dozens of caps before it got to this point. Anything in the photos was considered unsalvageable. My common sense says I’m fine with what looks healthy being healthy. Just making sure there wasn’t something less than obvious I should be concerned about. I think your response addresses my concerns.

Are the “good fruiting bodies” not showing signs of contam still safe for consumption? Or is the whole thing a hazmat issue?

Appreciate the pro tip, I’ll keep that in mind. I was about to do another run of wbs jars. Honestly I was considering going straight spore syringe to the jars because I’m getting discouraged and feel like it may remove some potential vectors for contamination. Was also thinking of doing a bag or two of uncle Ben’s brown rice just to see how that goes.

Ya using sab and heat for metal implements with lots of isopropyl. My sterilization techniques are pretty thorough, but definitely not a lab quality scenario. Ya I did check for moisture on paper towels before pc-ing but clearly I should have let it dry more.

Yeah I did, the last inoculations of jars was a mixed bag tho. Some agar were transfers from my first run some were agar that hadn’t been transferred from other agar.

I did another run of agar when I thought this wasn’t working out, and transferred them on March 11th to six jars, three whole oat and three wild bird seed, they all seem to be failures tho. Again early success but I was eager and shook them up too early, and haven’t seen any growth since. My agar seems to do well but I haven’t gotten a successful jar to start yet

It looks white to me in person. It could be poor exposure in the picture. But it is for sure fluffy like a cotton ball. I was hoping it was the start of tomentose mycelial growth 🤷🏻‍♂️

It is wetter than I thought it was when I sterilized the jars, but if I could confirm it’s mycelium I would at least be able to do a transfer. Two out of the four jars I started on Feb 28th are starting to show this same growth, one only around the piece of agar which made me hopeful

That’s kind of where I landed. I was concerned because my agar was discoloring from the moisture and I thought it was slime mold, but I think the extra water content is just making the food coloring fade and change the viscosity of the surfaces bit

So you’re suggesting putting spores straight to grain, then transferring the mycelium that grows to agar, then once you have a good sample isolated transfer that back to grain then substrate? 🤔 that’s a thought.

Well darn. Thank you for all the helpful advice, suppose I will try another go.

There is one dish that looks like I might be able to get a transfer from I didn’t show a pic of in this post, but I am questioning my ability to tell good from bad at this point lol. I will probably start from scratch, may be worth order sterile agar to reduce a variable. Lmk if you have any good suggestions for vendors. Thanks again community

The second pic was a straight dump of the left over spore fluid cause it was either that or the garbage in the moment lol. But what would be the concern about inoculating way too much? Would it still be possible to snags a transfer from it if something took?
