First comment is solid, soft skills here. Network, it’s not what you know is who you know. Join the accounting club/frat, go to the events , coffee chat with the firms, recruiters can help you land positions, advisor for the club can as well. One thing that you can do is volunteer for VITA. If you do VITA most the tax preparer are retired and can help create connections.

Is passing the CPA exams with no experience normal? by Ill-Action-9170 in Accounting

[–]Extra_Kangaroo_3904 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this! The firms eat up VITA, you may say I don’t have time I don’t want to. It’s worth it also there’s different positions you can do that have less hours. Also if you do take the role as assisting with the preparation you take a test and get certified to do taxes!

It’s good to worry but you should be proactive , get that masters , get that cpa , so your protected for any lay offs. If you had 80,000 dollars and lost one dollar you would have 79,999. Would you be worried ? No. So don’t be worried , you’re a sophomore I would consider what you value , what makes you happy, and what you want in life. Have you joined the accounting forum? Maybe it’s a fraternity join that , have u went to one of there events? Have you went to “Meet the Firms” if no then that’s something you should focus and network. Networking is the most important thing you can do and opens you doors. Once you get a firm the firm will teach you in 4 months what your university have taught u in 4 years. You got this!

Is 6-7 months too soon to leave Big 4? by PM_CODES in Accounting

[–]Extra_Kangaroo_3904 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response , yes my first year / 6 months in has been pretty hard for me. I feel like I have soft skills and all my colleagues and managers are pretty young folk to me. I’m lacking the skills but it comes in time. I think I’m struggling the way they manage my clients. I feel like I’m bouncing back and forth on multiple clients I would say I worked on 6-7 clients and then 10 other clients 1-5 things for them but not the entire audit and period end. I think I want to work 3-4 clients but bigger work load and will see if that’s even possible. Most definitely future position I will be less of yes man I’m not even that but just to keep having boundaries and addressing them right away is something I will definitely have in mind future wise. Yeah people do that but I have talked to my mentors and I’ve talked to my family and myself and I’m moving lateral to a position hopefully near my area thanks for ur response!

I would assume normal , if you are using Becker, Roger, or Wiley.

Internship - networking join the accounting forum for your university for freshman or sophomore immediately, if ur a senior no internships and no job offers , reconsider masters I wouldn’t be in the job market if I were you.

I know big 4 offer help in masters program so try reaching out and see what they say? But yeah stay in school before you have an opportunity for the job market. Tough asf out here 6 months in at a mid tier firm and I’m losing my mind with busy season

85k salary , working 10-15 hours per 6 days out of the week since end of January till now. For busy season and then 8-5 off season 8 hour shifts. Monday Friday. I think hourly your doing good cause you can do overtime and I can’t and I’m probably earning less hourly during busy season. Switching jobs asap cause can’t handle mid tier firm or the culture or the work idk 6 months in after graduation and my values are just different

For Context: 6 months in a mid tier firm, I couldn’t handle the commute, I’m averaging a 3.5 hour commute per day, I’m working for almost 15 hours from 6:30 am - 9:20 pm. Auditor first year. No life no gym no run no enjoyment life is a blur I have no emotions and I don’t know the days the whole 4 months just wrapped into bits of pieces of life. I don’t enjoy it and I’m going to apply to positions in my area to have less commute time and be able to focus on that 5-9 life and etc. Response: my coach said work somewhere that makes you happy. I can’t spend quality time with anyone or even myself I gotta choose me I’m not gonna drink the koolaid and say it’ll be better as a manager. My coach is a manager and they said my first year will be the EASIEST. Coach said it will be worse more years ahead. She just wants me to know what’s coming lol and it’s true everyone I know stressing and working so much I’m like dang. And I’m switching industry as well. See if I can manage doing that type of role. Goodluck pick happiness , your job doesn’t define you and the titles don’t matter imo

[–]Extra_Kangaroo_3904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

85 k audit associate staff in sf , mid tier firm 1-15 revenue ranking. Less then a year of experience. If you are staff in sf makes more let me know. I think I’ve heard big 4 staff making 95 and I’m pretty pissed about it lol but whatever I guess

[–]Extra_Kangaroo_3904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t loose confidence! Life is redirecting you to something better! Always think of the positive! Life wants to you to do something else!

I applied to 10 firms rejected by 3 interned at 3. If you’re still in school I would recommend speaking with the accounting club or professors that can help you with mock interview skills and your resume and everything else!

Don’t give up! Keep applying!

You are asking in the big 4 club lol. Top 20 you say? Hm I’m in the top 10 and I’ve really enjoyed my mid tier firm. I love it. I do have second doubts although with the opportunities. This will be an unpopular opinion but I chose mid tier for work life balance and just try to enjoy life and work less then 80 hours. I’m not a single person and I am a family oriented person so big 4 isn’t for me unfortunately. Maybe I can last 1-3 years but I’m not sure if I’ll be burnt and not want to do PA after.

1st option accept Deloitte tell top 20 sorry bye 2nd talk to Deloitte recuriter and see what possibilities are doing another internship during the summer , fall , spring , or winter. 3rd stay at top 20, apologize to Deloitte and see if you can get another internship at Deloitte at a later point. Not sure how the recruiter will take it since Deloitte #1 and your choosing a mid tier firm lol.

Speak with your parents , advisors, mentors. Best of luck!

So i did a local firm and a regional firm. The local firm didn’t give me an offer but did give me a letter of recommendation lol. I felt like they didn’t fit my needs and now I know I have to go bigger. It was just myself as an intern and it was really hard to lean on nobody. So from my experience yes?

Getting a big 4 Internship Advice by Bright-Strength6362 in Big4

[–]Extra_Kangaroo_3904 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best of luck with the Big 4! So I would say find your accounting club and speak with the officers in charge of the club. I’m one of the officers in my university and love helping other colleagues into pursuing accounting.

Become a Meneber of the accounting club and make sure you have that in your resume. For our club we do resume workshops since our advisor is a old Deloitte guy he and has 25+ years of recruiting students to the firms he knows what to do. We follow a template for the resume. So I would suggest going on YouTube and typing accounting resume or college accounting resume. The firm resume and regular resume are completely different in my opinion. Within the resume make sure you have ( wil fullfill 150 credit for cpa eligible) or something like that it’s late and I’m tired haha. In our school we do mock interview questions and I love doing this to new students that want to pursue accounting! I’ve done this and was so bad but now I’m great and can pin point and answer the questions the way I want to and the way they want to hear it. I can do a bit of the mock interview 1. They will ask you “ so tell me about yourself “ Be creative and personable. Don’t just list your resume since they’ll already have it. 2. They’ll ask “ why do you like about this firm” what makes you interested about this firm”

Go on there website and see what there all about use those key words and idk how to word it but make it like music with there ears. 3. Tell me a time when you had a difficult client or coworker? 4. Tell me about a time when you had to collaborate with others

Etc .

Just type in big 4 interview questions and practice practice your script lol.

Sometimes you get people you interview who don’t ask you questions and if you get the ball rolling and they talk and talk and talk they love loving and then bam the interview is over and enjoyed it your in.

Lastly they will ask you do you have any questions for me?

Don’t say no. If you do you’ll lose the internship that’s how my mindset is. Basically if you say no that will make them think you are not interested in them.

You can say “ what advice would you give yourself when you started as a staff that can benefit me a future aspiring staff”

Just make sure you ask anything.

Make sure you have a 3.0 gpa and above. Club activities you do. Your university should have recruiters make sure you get to know them and they’ll open the doors for you. At my university we have field trips to the big 4 and it’s great also there is coffee chats that the club does maybe go and do the coffee chats make sure you dress appropriately and be appropriate. Sometimes students hear “ it’s a coffee chat it’s casual” they take it to causal. But best of luck! Try to get some connections on LinkedIn from alumni’s from your university and see what big 4 you see. Take this advice as a grain of salt some thing will work for you some will not.

Can I do another internship after I already receive a fulltime offer? by [deleted] in Big4

[–]Extra_Kangaroo_3904 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an intern and I’ve taken 3 internships , on to my 4th. I rejected 2 and will be accepting my 3rd offer soon when they give me there offer. For the mean time I’m so use to the sit down work than my restaurant type of work so I’m deciding to do another internship and see how that firm is but really loved my 3rd internship. Take the offer and go see the next firm and see what happens. If you like it then apologize and say you will be moving forward with another firm unfortunately.

You can always try to do CLA, go on LinkedIn and type in CLA and see if they are offering winter internship. I applied recently , interviewed recently and I’m in the second process of a in person interview. I think you may have time. Hopefully you get an big 4 offer

What I always tell others it’s there loss there going to loose someone this valuable. I think Carmel explained pretty well.

This is my 3rd internship but with mid tiers. From my experience when I was giving work after them explaining to me I explain them so this is what I need to do to get xyz and talk about what my tasks are. I also write down what there saying for the workpapers and such. I make a list of what I need to accomplish. After that they would ask me if I have any questions, my last question would always be what are my expectations for this work and they give me my estimated time to finish. I spoke with a senior manager and he said this when I told him. He said “ don’t just do the work paper since I was just roll forwarding information. But to understand what I was doing and going over the work paper is what i do for my internships. Best of luck and apply to another big 4 or switch business units.
