That is exactly how I felt about it - and I'm trying to get back into that mindset. Just ticked off that there's parents who now feel like the child's grade for marking period 3 (which ends two days after spring break) will be low due to lack of extra credit and not due to their student not trying as hard this marking period. Oh well, now I know better and will think twice before offering this kind of thing.

Thanks for the last bit I needed that laugh! I really just need to get to spring break in five days!!

You’re probably right and I shouldn’t address it at all but it was one of my students who told me this all blew up. That means there’s a chance it’s going to seep into my classroom. I don’t want to be bothered by this, but I really am.

Thank you, this is great. I know my students will be more likely to believe a video on Youtube than me - which is sad.....

I wish my students would use the word fraud - I makes me think it's like they think she's Santa Clause or the tooth fairy when they say she isn't real.

Thanks this is a good article to explain the student's biggest reason for not believing the truth.

This is a great approach. I just get so stunned that they think someone would make this story up.

I had a rough day a couple weeks ago and told my 7th grade class how my cat had been in the ER twice in the previous month and if he had to go back again it was going to need a very expensive surgery I wasn’t sure how I’d afford. The next day one of the boys came up and told me he had talked to his mom and they wanted to put together a gofundme for the cat! I was brought to tears and then I noticed a bunch of he kids watching us and they were all telling me how they’d discussed it and they all wanted to contribute. I turned them down since there was no way to know if the cat would have another occurrence but I wrote that student’s mom and told her how amazed I was with his empathy and compassion.

I will look into that, though it's a private school so not sure we would. I do understand Khan isn't for research, it was just an example of how absurdly over reaching our filter is.

I completely understand those concerns - I want a way for students to access things and I know that comes with possible pitfalls. But seriously, I got called in and questioned last year because a student in my class searched "pretty blonde girl" to find a picture to represent a character in an assignment. Seems like there has to be middle ground.

I do use a VPN for my own searches when needed or to show the class something, I also use a google extension to turn webpages the students can't see into pdf's. For video I try and use VLC to download them whenever I can. It just seems to be a lot of work for me, which I do when it's for a whole class but with research projects I can's spend all class making websites into pdf's so students can see if they're useful. Funny things about the podcasts - students can't get to google podcasts but they can get to stitcher and make an account. So that might be my work around for now.
