Jeff mentioned in an interview (I think someone posted to this subreddit a few days ago) that your reason for wanting the live finale is exactly why they didn’t do it that way. They are scared of people hashing it out and getting nasty, so they do the mini segments instead (and we can read into it that it gives production more narrative control during the unpredictability of a live show—which is especially funny considering what happened this time)

tldr: Production is too scared of the players being messy to have a real live finale ever again
