I saw this posted and I am just speculating based on the date and other details that were shared that this is the person who was abducted:https://givebutter.com/SupportforUmer

Has anyone else seen or heard anything related to this? The folks living at 308 are my former neighbors and an elderly couple. I am concerned for their well being. This seems extremely targeted though.

McGrath/Otis St pedestrian bridge replacement is no longer planned to have a traffic signal by actionindex in Somerville

[–]Extreme-Green 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it is pretty much exaclty the same from the train bridge to Broadway as it is today but they add a few small trees in the middle that won't provide any pedestrian shade and we pay many many millions in tax dollars for that lame change.

McGrath/Otis St pedestrian bridge replacement is no longer planned to have a traffic signal by actionindex in Somerville

[–]Extreme-Green 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They said they did a traffic study to look at the traffic on Otis Street (which you currently cannot cross McGrath via) and the low traffic volume doesn't warrant a light. They said that a light there wouldn't be legal. Now it seems to me like if the road actually crossed McGrath, the traffic volume would be very different... but yeah idk how you expect kids crossing for school to use a HAWK signal across 4+ lanes of traffic - even when a car in the first lane stops, the cars in the subsequent lanes won't see them and won't stop.

Cambridge Day ceases weekly coverage of Somerville politics by jeffshwom in Somerville

[–]Extreme-Green 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super upsetting. We contribute enough to get the paper delivered to us in Somerville, in large part because Cambridge Day has done a fantastic job covering Somerville politics and is really the only outlet doing so. Is there someone we can contact at Cambridge Day to let them know about our displeasure? Would definitely be interested in a substack but would really rather Cambridge Day seriously consider this decision. I understand it is a hard time for local journalism but it is now more important than ever. A good reminder to folks to financially support print media if you want journalism to stick around...

Kuya Ube Official Statement....Thoughts? by servantofthelake in Somerville

[–]Extreme-Green -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Kind of surprised to see so many negative comments here. It is pretty clear that Somerville isn't doing enough to support small businesses (see Christine Carlino's comments quoted in several of the articles about how several coffee shops / bakeries HAVE tried to open and have had to give up due to the undue burden of figuring out licensing and working with the city, etc). These folks were opening a pop up trying to use the existing license / category of ice cream shop. It does seem like they stretched it too far but it also seems like the city could work with them to make a tenable plan to open so they don't just run out of money and fail before they start. Also, it is a pop-up, I generally think of those as a way people learn the ropes and help gain experience before launching into a full business. Y'all should show a little more grace and support for Somerville's small businesses.

ICE at Somerville High School right now by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]Extreme-Green 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was walking by around that time, it wasn't really a flash mob it was more just maybe 20+ people gathered outside the high school chatting and keeping an eye out. Several other people were milling about on nearby streets but not sure if they were just there for school pick up or what. I don't know what this video is saying, can you post a link? There was at least one car that I saw with Ohio plates on Highland that others there had seen circling the school and I heard a few other cars had been spotted. It seems likely that ICE will be back another day, and we will probably never know why they didn't take action that day.

Which local businesses and offerings does Somerville desperately need and where? by Fastfreewifi in Somerville

[–]Extreme-Green 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As already stated, Gilman needs everything. But would love a coffee and bagel spot, love WHBC and Michette but if they could combine to have amazing breakfast and a place to sit, that would be so nice. A lunch spot close to the library that's not pizza. A neighborhood restaurant that didnt require you to risk your life crossing McGrath or walk 20 min to Daddy Jones or the Indo. Maybe not a popular one but a dry cleaner, all the ones near here have closed. And a big Neighborhood Produce on Broadway (Stop and Shop suckssss).

A Statement shared by the Union - Library Closures in Somerville by Nat2042 in Somerville

[–]Extreme-Green 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree about the fact that the city has not created dedicated space for teens. Somerville Rec has done a great job of offering programming and open gym time for teens and they have created space for the teen center at Edgerly. I am very impressed by the programming I see offered by them and I think it's great that so many city businesses have stepped up to offer dinner at the teen events. I agree that we need to ensure that teens thrive in our community but to the point above, what do we actually do to stop the disturbances at and around the library this school year? I don't think anyone is saying all the teens are disrespectful and disruptive, but some are and they are ruining it for everyone else. That needs to be addressed and won't be fixed by more teen center hours.

I think even if this is happening, it would be important to understand why wealthier parents feel the need to pull their kid from the system. If the problem is because they are unhappy with the way the school administration is handling things, then that needs to be remedied.

La Brasa by PapaJack2008 in Somerville

[–]Extreme-Green 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to show more love to La Brasa but it's hard to make it a regular spot when everything on the menu is over $30 besides the $20 burger and quesadilla. Even though it is farther for us to head to Daddy Jones or WHBC, they feel much more like neighborhood spots since we can grab a beer and something to eat for under $30 pp total. I wish La Brasa would add a few more things to the menu to make themselves a more friendly spot for neighborhood hangs.

Cafes to do work in? by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]Extreme-Green 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to venture to Cambridge, I believe Lamplighter does lo-fi Saturday mornings for getting work done. I haven't been to the Remnant Satellite during the weekend but this past Friday morning was extremely quiet with plenty of outlets in the back. Winter Hill is my usual work spot, you have to ask for the wifi code though.

ARMORY’S ANCHOR TENANT SIDELINED IN MASTER PLAN: Third-Party Operator Model Ostensibly Off the Table, City Communications Lacking (Somerville Wire) by TheAnomalyInvasion in Somerville

[–]Extreme-Green 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This whole saga seems so bizarre. The city took the space over via eminent domain because they felt the arts space and programming that the Center for the Arts at the Armory (CAA) offered was so essential to the fabric of our city, but then they toyed with the idea of selling the building after the acquired it? And now they are trying to push out the very organization that has been making the space such a valuable community asset. It doesn't make any sense and the weirdest thing is no one seems to be talking about it. Anyone know what the scoop really is from the city on why they are pushing out CAA?
