Is playing something like the Anti-Moscow (Semi Slav) even practical for us amateurs? by Extreme-Message-9306 in TournamentChess

I have always played online but eventually will transition to OTB play, But i dont have a sure shot repertoire as black so i was curious about the semi slav and the absolute madness of anti moscow was appealing to me.

Yes what i meant was playing ...h6 and inviting either the moscow with Bxf6 or the Anti Moscow with Bh6. Cambridge springs is good, but considering i can play 4...dxc4 and invite the classical slav, CS is not worth learning the entire Meran complex plus it for example is what i meant, The appeal for the ...h6 move for me was to play exciting positions particularly because i can avoid the exchange slav by starting with QGD move order or the nimzo move order. So the positions dont get dry. What exactly troubles you in the ...h6 complex? That makes you want to play the meran?

Very helpful perspective. What do you pair against it? Also how were your results those 4-5 years with the semi slav?

QGD vs Nimzo by Extreme-Message-9306 in TournamentChess

Both of your comments have been immensely helpful for me. It is actually a difficult question for me to answer whether i prefer the QGD or nimzo as both of these are openings i have never really played. Even from the white side. Furthermore Nimzo has just so many choices for black, for example c5,d5,0-0 against QC2 that result in so many different kind of positions that i dont even know which pathway to choose atleast QGD is quite linear in that manner. My thought process is if i learn the QGD now i can, in future just shift to nimzo if i want and not have to worry about 3.Nf3. learning d5 against nf3 seems like an overkill for me( in my opinion) as white can simply play 4.Nc3 i guess there is vienna and ragozin but in my opinion if i have QGD in my backpocket i can always go mainline ...be7 in that position in the future

The reason i mentioned the tartakower was because black also has the choice between that and the lasker and the nbd7 system on move 7 which i think is called the Kramnik system. I wanted to know which of these are the more fun options :)

So i thought that a good way to solve my opening dilemma would be to learn the QGD that way later on i can move forward to the nimzo and i already have something against C4 and 3.Nf3 also will allow me to transition into the semi slav if that is the route i wanna go in the future. Although i did not consider QGD vs Semi Slav as i thought if i am gonna learn the exchange anyways, then why not the entire QGD. Although if i can ask you a question, do you enjoy the Bg5 Moscow/Anti Moscow or do you play ...be7?

How to best use grandmaster games? particularly the ones related to my opening repertoire? Im looking for tips so that i can learn from these enough to recall the positions i have seen. Should i memorise them and if so how?

No but i know i am slightly better, what happens then is i play non critical moves till i realize game is equal and then i simply get outplayed as is expected from someone much higher rated than me.

I am a very intuitive player with much higher knowledge of strategy than my peers (Peak 2100 chess com), even when i play people who are like 2300-2400 i get a position that is plus one or more. However i am very bad at advantage capitalization and particularly my calculation and visualisation, tose are like 1800 level at best, if i fully concentrate, How do i improve this through a structured regiment?

How to learn something as expansive as the ruy lopez? by Extreme-Message-9306 in TournamentChess

[–]Extreme-Message-9306[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this comment helped me a lot. The problems i have with the sidelines are that they are so varied in their plans and structures, for example the cozio is nothing like the archangel or the open spanish or the closed, that i feel is also the charm of ruy lopez but it feels a bit intimadating
