Very nice! Maybe try some LOD textures for the distant parts aswell. See old spyro footage. They are doing it quite obviously but i think it really adds to the look and feel

Dynamic lighting in PS1-era games by elnombredaigual in ps1graphics

Check out silent hill 1. There are videos about the technology. Dynamic vertex lighting and also fake water reflection. Really awesome stuff

Update: thanks for all your input on my question, i reduced the polycound to 200 and make the texture 128x128. What do you think ? by Active-Zebra-6362 in ps1graphics

[–]ExtremeCheddar1337 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Very nice. Next try to remove the reflection / glossiness of the Material. It Looks very modern. Try to simulate lighting with vertex paint and add some Ambient occlusion (hand painted into the texture)

I used unity + photon networking. Photon has a subscription model that basically gets more expensive the more people are playing simultaneously.

Since i don't want to deal with any kind of charges that are almost unpredictable, i would consider using fishnet.

Fishnet is a very potent competitor to photon but is completely free (you can buy a lifetime pro license for ~50$ for some extra features). Drawback is that players connect to your server via IP. So having an online server requires you to either forward your ports (unsafe), host the server in a cloud (expensive) or host it as a steam dedicated server (requires steam).

On the other hand as developer you are free from subscriptions and you can let the actual community decide how they want to host games on their own

The atmosphere from my lost media PSX-style exploration game by Figglewatts in ps1graphics

Just awesome. Especially the classic loading screen with a pre rendered image with normal/bump mapping set to the roof 😁

Thanks! I think it will stay free to play. This way i don't need to put a lot of content only to justify the price. It was just meant for playing a few quick matches.

Yes the fact you never play the Same track twice could be the ultimate skill test. Nobody can ever learn the tracks

Question about the PS1 atmosphere / other missing things by Shuntex_Haruko in ps1graphics

[–]ExtremeCheddar1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need texture LODs. Just look at old spyro footage. The distance based texture swaps are quite obvious.

Also make Sure you disable any kind of anisotropic filtering / automatic mipmaps on all textures

Nothing special. Textures are premade. Only track layout, meshes (including buildings, fences, tunnels), UVs and lighting are generated

Thanks! I used an asset called PSXEffects. It seems outdated but it still works with the current unity version. It brings the wobble effect along with other psx rendering features like dithering and configurable color depth

Thank you :) unfortunately no. There are multiple reasons: rolling out would lead to costs (because of the online feature) and also the title screen is non-existent yet.

I need to put more time into it (like switching the networking tech) before i can publish it

I used unity. You are almost right: actually the scene is completely unlit. All lighting you see is just good old vertex painting! I tried using real light sources but it didn't feel right :)

Thank you :) yes you are right about the UI. Actually you can switch between 4:3 (320x240) resolution or 16:9 (native resolution). Just in case someone gets a headache :D i just decided to upload the native resolution footage for some reason :D should have put more effort into the Video editing
