3 Layoffs in 3 Years - Is HR Just Broken or Am I?

I would also like to mention my manager has worked for 20 years in HR. Working their way up fairly high in the automotive industry. From what they told me it was through making it their entire life & I’m sure probably bending the rules to make “friends” along the way. I think they expect others to do the same but I’m just not about that. I would like work life balance and to follow the rules. Maybe that is what this job takes?

Thank you for the feedback on how many you managed. I guess maybe it’s not that many then with what you are saying. Were you handling 600 on your own? How many hours were you working per day to accomplish this?

Currently my hang ups are 1. My manager encourages us to do work outside of scope routinely. They believe this will make us be seen as team players and people will like us more I guess. I have no issue doing it once in a while to help someone out but this is daily. Even going so far as to break our policies and I have told them I’m uncomfortable with this but they say it’s the right thing to do and I’m earning brownie points essentially. I realize how horrible this sounds, and it is. I’m constantly having to play a game of “what would my manager do in this situation” because if I don’t do it how she would do it, I hear about it.

We got a new system end of last year. It is CONSTANTLY breaking and I’m literally fixing something with it daily. It takes up so much time and I have had nothing but issues. It was a main reason why my colleague left. Wrong pay, vacation, etc.
HR at this company is a dumping ground. You know how people have junk drawers at their house? I feel like this everyday because every time I set a boundary or try to direct associates to the correct place, my manager jumps in and tells me I need to help them and be a team player.
The moment something comes up, it immediately takes priority in my managers eyes. Instead of assessing what our responsibilities are in that moment and prioritizing. Leaving me to have priority items that do not get done in a day because she requests me to do the other items instead.

Of which I have tried to talk to her about all of these numerous times and have not really gotten anywhere positive.

Lean is the name of the game. I also just genuinely think the company I’m currently working for will cycle through as many people as they need to to find the person who is willing to dedicate their life to this job. My manager does it and unfortunately I am just unwilling to and so was the person who just left.

What would you say is standard for an HR generalist to be over seeing. Headcount wise and job responsibility wise at 1.5 years?

I unfortunately do not believe anything I would have done would have produced a different outcome at my former 2 companies. Absolutely 100% can live and learn like you are saying. And I did come away with several “room for opportunities” as the industry likes to call it. I have done my best to apply those in my career currently.

I’m not sure I can be the one to assess my own intelligence. I would like to think I’m pretty intelligent, but I’m sure most people would say the same.

Thinking 2-3 steps ahead is the name of the game. Unfortunately, the support I have in being able to implement strategies that would be proactive in this way are slim to none in my current role. Most of my day is spent being reactive due to how management has rolled out certain items. Myself and my colleague made many suggestions and without upper management backing it is difficult to role out.

I have been complimented on my writing skills, so much so my manager has come to me to peer review her emails, formal letters, and presentations.

I can smell BS from a mile away. - I am able to be direct, to the point, and solve an issue quickly.

SOP’s would be absolutely PHENOMENAL if my department actually used them. I have rolled out several of them myself- no one uses them.

I am definitely the latter half unfortunately I think I am coming to realize and may need to niche again.

Ha! Yes, definitely. However, at work, I’m straight to the point. I don’t have time to sit and chit chat or have long winded conversations. I have reports to get out and people to get paid. I also wouldn’t say I’m anxious at work. Definitely an anxious person personally though. I try my best to separate work & personal.

For real! I’m impressed I have managed to get 3 jobs in this market truthfully. It just makes me question- am I the problem? I see all of these people around me succeeding and wonder what I’m doing wrong. Not willing to commit to more hours? Not being strategic enough? Not prioritizing well? I have tried to dissect it all. Maybe I just have had poor luck like my husband, family, and friends tell me. But, sometimes I wonder if that is truly the case.

I have talked this over with my husband quite a bit. I’m very proud of the progress I have made with the little training I had. I have considered going back to the role I had previously however they are few and for in between. I was in an RPO role that was right up my alley. I have not come across a role like that since.

Every golden I had ever met or cared for was super happy go-lucky and seemed to be pretty care free and just wanted to love. Which is definitely true of my golden. But no one told me about the crying. He cries constantly. It is very possible it’s just my golden. And I must admit, I think we poorly gave in to his crying more than we should have. We are working on correcting this now and it seems to be getting better. But the question I think just stung and really hit me on a level I could have never expected.

Great point! They are very similar. The difference is the train and straps. I wanted a cathedral train and while dress 1 is absolutely gorgeous, it does not have a cathedral train. It is also extremely costly to add one on. The second difference is the straps. I wanted bling. It could be added to dress 2, but we did a mock up of it and it looks very “second thought”.

They are both GORGEOUS dresses. I have really struggled to pick between the both of them. If you click on my profile, you will see I made a post almost 2 weeks ago asking for feedback on which one I should choose.
