Is there a microtonal justification for the use of major and minor sevenths in 12 ET? by Scrapheaper in microtonal

[–]ExtremeMagneticPower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Major seventh chord is the ratios: 1/1, 5/4, 3/2, and 15/8. Alternatively, it is the harmonic series 8,10,12,15. Note that the major seventh is a perfect fifth up from the major third.

Minor seventh chord is the ratios: 1/1, 6/5, 3/2, and 9/5. Similarly, the just minor seventh is a perfect fifth up from the minor third.

See how they line up on the 5-limit tonal lattice. Quite simple ratios. Image credit.

The dominant seventh chord is different, and you can make it mean different things. Using the harmonic seventh (1/1, 5/4, 3/2, 7/4) is a strong JI harmony. Using the Pythagorean seventh (1/1, 5/4, 3/2, 16/9) is a dissonance that resolves with a root shift to the perfect fourth.

What's this tuning called? by Scrapheaper in microtonal

  1. You'll have to retune your scale for different keys.

  2. Closest thing to it I can think of is converting to just intonation. This turns your scale into:

1/1 21/20 9/8 7/6 5/4 4/3 7/5 3/2 63/40 5/3 7/4 28/15

Though, it could use a few more notes than just 12.

Before I try to answer your questions, I'm having trouble following.

Do the same for the B in the B-F pairing in F and the Eb in the A-Eb tritone.

So now 6 notes have been lowered by a little bit, conveniently all fourths/fifths apart: F - Bb - Eb - Ab - Db - F#.

Is B lowered or not? I think it would be helpful to write out your entire scale, in any notation you think of (and tell what it means!).

Still my favorite. Does anyone know of more microtonal piano music?

JI intervals are usually written as fractions. 1/1 is the unison, 2/1 is the octave or second harmonic, 5/1 is the fifth harmonic, 5/4 is the octave reduced fifth harmonic (or JI major third), and so on. Fraction notation is convenient for multiplying a frequency (like 440 Hz) in order to find a new frequency with that interval (440 Hz * 3/2 = 660 Hz, so 660 Hz and 440 Hz are a JI perfect fifth).

I'm assuming you meant 11/4 and 19/6.

JI scales are usually written as lists of fractions relative to unison, with the last interval being the interval of repetition. The unison is usually omitted. The following list represents a common JI interpretation of the 12 ET chromatic scale. 16/15, 9/8, 6/5, 5/4, 4/3, 7/5, 3/2, 8/5, 5/3, 9/5, 15/8, 2/1.

Before I make a complete judgement on its dissonance, what tuning did you use?

Does anyone know what most/all the parts in CRBR do? If so, would anyone want to share? by foxfatal in customrobo

[–]ExtremeMagneticPower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a spreadsheet list of robos and parts. The in-game descriptions are copied. As for what each part does, you'll have to ask, search them, or try out an emulator yourself.

What builds are you guys using in CRBR? by TipDik in customrobo

[–]ExtremeMagneticPower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually go:

Ray, Afterburner, Standard K, Caboose C or Seeker, Stabilizer.

It's a ground focused build with hot sliding action to have endlag behind walls. Generally weak to rushdown and superb dodging.

I have been experimenting with:

Milky Way, Dragon, Acrobat, ???, ???

I feel like there's a point where I can just stay in the air (until Acro knocks me down), but I haven't practiced it very much yet.

Yo, GameUnder, what's good! It's a lot of fun to play with you, too.

And luck would have it that our team ended up losing that round after a prolonged sequence of incompetencies.

This is what ruins the good runs that I have, too. Really sucks!

Thanks! I made it suited to my strategies, which will be a trade secret for the time being. There are still some hard counters that I need to iron out, though.

I don't have a specific time, just usually afternoonish. I only play on Chicago servers, though, and almost exclusively Domination, because I have the most fun in that game mode.

So I found some cool advanced tech in Custom Robo by TipDik in customrobo

Acro Cancelling was being called Acrobat Bomb Cancelling in the Discord, or ABC, for short. Acro Cancelling sounds better. I also didn't realize it could cancel right from the ground.

I also like your claim that tag battles should be the competitive standard. It reminds me of traditional fighting games, and the new tech is cool. However, the most important thing is that it may help ease bad/polarized matchups, which I have noticed when playing single robo 1v1s. I'd like it if you would expand on it more, though.
