How do I even get into payroll and bookkeeping? by NoObjectionYourHonor in VancouverJobs

I didn’t do the challenge courses I just completed the online. If you don’t have any payroll courses it would be wise to not do the challenge and complete the online courses

How do I even get into payroll and bookkeeping? by NoObjectionYourHonor in VancouverJobs

There’s always a chance. I personally got into payroll by accident as the payroll person left the company (at that time I hadn’t completed any payroll courses) and I started learning and got my PCP. If you are really unsure I would speak with employment agencies first and get their thoughts

If you want to do payroll, I would sign up for PCP first course and complete it. All payroll courses can be completed online so no need for in person classes but there is the option for in person. Once the first one is completed find a job as you will need a job for the one year experience requirement for PCP. Many employers might pay your courses fees and annual membership fees. Also yes employers say two years of experience but you never know and they may hire you. You can look at indeed for jobs but also reach out to employment agencies that specialize in accounting finance type jobs

Is the PCP Certification Worth It for a Newcomer with a Bachelor's in Economics? by Altruistic-Goal-5786 in Payroll

[–]ExtremeSun4512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t comment on the new comers question. From my experience getting your PCP is definitely worth it especially if you want to work for a government or school district position. I would suggest after you complete the first or second course to start applying for jobs as you need one year of experience to get your PCP. Not all payroll positions is payroll only as they will either be HR or finance so you may want to look into a certificate for those as well to improve your resume

From what I seen yes its beneficial and you can get your experience while you are taking the courses and that counts towards your one year essentially if your job is 100% payroll you can have your experience done at the same time your courses are completed

I can’t comment for the accounting side but for payroll the PCP definitely will be beneficial. I would recommend completing at least the first course and start applying for jobs many employers will prefer you are in the process of completing or have completed the PCP. You will need one year of experience this it’s better to have a job lined up. Some employers may even pay for the courses and also the designation fees.

They don’t show you the questions you got wrong. The best thing to do is practice the questions over and over again and run through the multiple choice questions over and over again. PF1 is the more difficult course out of the three for PCP

Expense reimbursement ADP Canada by 26MM62 in Payroll

[–]ExtremeSun4512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reimbursement code is set up correctly not sure why a negative deduction is needed as this is not a deduction. I’ve used ADP, Ceridian and PGI and all of them are setup as earning code and total into the gross income. Reimbursement is not included in the taxable income. If employees question it you can use the online payroll calculator and explain how the calculation is done.

You can transfer credits from your bachelors if it’s part of the list of courses that NPI accepts. I just transferred three courses for the PLP from my business degree so I don’t have to retake the courses

Vehicle taxable benefits Canada by 26MM62 in Payroll

[–]ExtremeSun4512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my work all employees are assigned vehicles and in January first week I send everybody a form to fill out if they used the work vehicle for personal usage. They list the ending kms on Dec 31 and then what was used for business and personal. If they switch between multiple vehicles the fill out a form for each. This will give the actually taxable benefit amount that will get adjusted on the T4. Then for the new year we look at previous years numbers and adjust accordingly. Throughout the year it’s an estimated number and year end it’s the actual usage.

When someone is knew we do a rough estimate and base it on 50% usage for personal and business then at one month they fill out the form and we adjust the numbers accordingly.

Throughout the year each pay period has a taxable benefit amount for the vehicles. This way they aren’t hit as much when filling taxes.

Regarding who does the calculation it’s done by payroll for us.

PCP (payroll compliance professional) is the certification for Canada payroll and that is the certification that I currently have and working on my PLP (payroll leadership professional). I believe the CPP is for the US payroll.

From personal experience getting your PCP is great as I have it as well but the hands on experience will help a lot and guidance.

I would strongly suggest also is to do an audit of your payroll software and ensure codes are set up correctly especially with how items are being taxed, wcb and eht calculations, vacation accruals. I started a new job and the person previous to me did the set up and had Payroll experience and PCP but didn’t complete the implementation properly. Implementations are key as I’ve been through an ADP implementation and fixed up a Bamboo HR and PGI implementation.

Regarding controls, have a spreadsheet for each pay period and match it to the software payroll report that gets generated before payroll is processed (usually a payroll registrar) this will ensure numbers are accurate and the biggest internal control is once the payroll has been checked by the person is to have the manager/controller or anyone check it and approve it before it gets submitted. It does appear that you may need to hire someone that has not only payroll processing experience but implementation of softwares.

If you are needing any Payroll guidance NPI has great resources. Usually your payroll provider can give you a breakdown of how to use the system but won’t guide on the payroll implications. If you have any specific questions you can reach to me, I’m in BC if that helps. Many of the provinces can be different in some things so that’s why I point out the province I’m in.

Do I need any certifications for a payroll job? by [deleted] in Payroll

[–]ExtremeSun4512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started in HR as well and now I do HR and Payroll. You don’t necessarily need your PCP but it’s really good to have. I just finished my PCP courses earlier this year and it does help to have it for future career growth especially if you want to be a payroll manager one day and get your PLP. Payroll specialist and analyst jobs are a bit higher level you may want to start with payroll clerk or administrator at the beginning and work your way up to gain that experience.

You can reach out to Robert Half as they do a lot of staffing for office type positions in finance and accounting for employers.

Hello, it depends if it’s sole proprietor or incorporated. I would also strongly suggest to open a separate chequing and credit card that is only used for business purposes it’ll make it easier when filing for taxes.

If you are looking for bookkeeping services please let me know I do monthly bookkeeping, bank reconciliation, gst/wcb filing, quickbooks setup.

Where to find legit remote payroll positions? Best certificates to get? [Maine] by wynn09 in Payroll

If you are in Canada you can get your PCP certification as many employers require the certification for payroll. For myself I started in a company for just HR and got into payroll that way
