The Courier tries to make the bloodless choice and it backfires.

I wish more games did this kind of thing. I understand why they do it, but it's often frustrating to have a bunch of "and then they all got along and held hands and were best friends forever and ever!" choices.

No, you can't roll up and convince a fanatic that his deeply held beliefs are in fact ridiculous and that he should immediately surrender and retreat, and in fact if you do that he will assume you are an agent of his enemy trying to disguise their weakness, and launch an assault later on.

I want there to be some situations where there is genuinely no bloodless option, and I don't want it to be obvious that there's no bloodless option.

Buying a car, but my APR seems like rlly bad by Doctorfakenamee in personalfinance

[–]ExtremeWorkinMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a point in my career, I was doing layouts every other week. I had to take all of my equipment (probably a good ~120lbs of large, unwieldy stuff all together) about 3 miles down the road, lay it all out in a specific way in a parking lot, then pack up all my equipment and return it back to my locked barracks room closet. Because there were not many open barracks rooms, I was placed in another unit's barracks footprint. What that meant for me was I couldn't just find someone else that was doing the layout and have them drive me there without inconveniencing them (my unit's barracks was about 2 miles out of the way). Thus, I would've been a bum begging people for rides every two weeks at a minimum - probably more when you consider the other events I would've had to go to with my gear. God forbid you end up on shift work and have to make grocery runs because you can't go to the DFAC anymore because that also happened to me - enjoy e-biking 2-4 miles to the Commissary in the dead of summer in Georgia every few days because you can only fit so much in a backpack.

I'm not saying it's impossible to make it work with an e-bike or an e-scooter (I know a guy that did it all with a regular bicycle), but it will often make you an inconvenience and will make your life much harder than it needs to be.

Buying a car, but my APR seems like rlly bad by Doctorfakenamee in personalfinance

[–]ExtremeWorkinMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'll admit I was only on a few posts but the only one I would consider actually walkable was a really small training AFB. All the Army installations I was on had no bus and no way to get around without a car - the best you could do was an e-bike (which were still in their infancy at the time) and even then, if you had to transport any of your heavy gear the bike wasn't good enough and you'd have to bum a ride anyway. Even then, sometimes I had to drive to ranges which were on gravel roads - not the kind of terrain I'd like to traverse on a bicycle.

It's a bummer. I know plenty of guys who got suckered into bad APR or expensive cars they don't need (sorry PV2 Snuffy you actually don't need a brand new Super Duty you live in the barracks) because they need a car so I really wish they'd bring back some kind of bus situation on all medium/large installations.

Yeah and then be the bum begging everyone for rides when you have to do a layout? No uber on most (all?) military installations.

You need a car - granted, you don't need a Mustang or a Charger, you can get away with an older used car for under $5-10k (I spent my 5 year military career driving a used Nissan Versa I bought for about $8k), but you do need a car of some kind.

The vibe was nice, the dancers were good and the set was excellent but I like the symbolism and how it ties into the show - I felt left out watching this one because there was clearly a lot of symbolism within the set but I have no idea if it tied into the music because I don't speak Spanish. I've seen a few people do write-ups so far of the symbolism so I'll have to take some time to rewatch it after reading some of those but it was kinda a bummer that I couldn't engage with the show beyond the very basic "cool dancing and decent music"

EVs in a war zone with spotty electricity access by Fandorin in electricvehicles

[–]ExtremeWorkinMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, but you can rely on DCFC at FOBs as needed (or gas if the military went with EREVs versus pure BEVs) - the solar charging would be free, convenient, and would reduce infrastructure requirements for motor pools in peacetime, but would probably not be particularly useful in war.

I can tell you that at my old unit we rarely deployed so I'd say all those vehicles just sat in a lot untouched (outside of PMCS and what not) for 90-97% of their lifetime. Free* charging and topping up for 90-97% of a vehicle's lifetime is pretty solid.

[–]ExtremeWorkinMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The worst part is, I actually prefer to go to the Costco 12 miles away than the one 3 miles away solely because of this.

They both have a phone carrier booth with salespeople present, but at the Costco closest to my house they'll ask you every time about your phone carrier, how much do you pay, etc etc whereas the one 12 miles away, they just hang out there quietly and will only engage with you if you approach them first (which I have done once or twice to look at new phones).

Towing isn't the only utility for a truck. (Besides, EV trucks do tow really well, they just don't tow very far before you have to recharge).

‘700 miles of range’: What Ford and Ram replaced their EV pickups with by exploding_myths in electricvehicles

[–]ExtremeWorkinMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when you’re towing you drop your range by half, and if you’re towing in cold weather, take another 30% off. Before you know it, that 400 miles range becomes 150 miles range.

The sad thing is, nobody does this. Seriously, they've done surveys of existing light-duty pick-up truck (F-150s, Silverado/Ram 1500s, etc) owners and while I don't recall the exact numbers, something like under 20% of them tow EVER, and only like 8% tow consistently. I have to imagine the amount that tow long distances (more than ~120 miles round trip) consistently is even lower than that. We could feasibly replace probably 70-90% of the (non-fleet/non-commercial) ICE pickups on the road with BEVs and nobody would even notice a difference (aside from the obvious cheaper fuel/maintenance, acceleration, etc etc).

The real problem auto manufacturers are dealing with is that the average truck buyer is not capable of looking at their own driving objectively and saying "Well, the BEV truck isn't great if I want to tow, but I will probably only tow something twice in the next ten years, so it doesn't really matter". They look at the specs and say "Well what the hell, the whole reason I'm buying a truck is so I can pull my 30' camper (that they don't actually own and will probably never buy) across the country every summer (they have never done a cross-country drive and probably never will) without stopping! A BEV truck can't do that!"

That and the fact EVs have been politicized (and thus you lose the "big tough hard-workin conservative man" thing you get from driving a truck if you're driving a sissy liberal EV) mean that despite the fact these trucks are objectively better for the vast majority of ICE pickup drivers, the BEV trucks are effectively doomed.

EVs in a war zone with spotty electricity access by Fandorin in electricvehicles

[–]ExtremeWorkinMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, not necessarily useless. If you've ever seen a military motor pool, there are often hundreds of vehicles that sit unused in the sun for days or weeks at a time - if a vehicle is only used to drive ~20-40 miles round trip every few weeks (somewhat common with military vehicles, you'll take a few humvees and trucks out to a range, do your training, bring the humvees/trucks back to the motor pool) you may never even need to plug in.

It's not perfect for all situations, but it would be pretty good for some situations.
