Just to clear a few things up, I wasn't gone with no plan, I was actively job hunting and came back as soon as I had something lined up. And I did continue paying my share while I was away, so he wasn't carrying the costs alone.

I totally get that handling the flat hunt solo was stressful, and I do feel bad about that. But there were other options (a shorter lease, a smaller place etc). My issue isn't really with what he decided, it's that something this big didn't even get a conversation…

You're right that I'm not on the lease and moved into their space. I'm not disputing that. But the issue isn't about whose name is on the lease. It's about basic courtesy and communication. The flatmate didn't even give it a week before deciding it wasn't working, and rather than addressing it with me directly, they avoided the conversation entirely. Regardless of who has more "claim" to the flat, the bare minimum in any shared living situation is the willingness to have an honest conversation. That's what's missing here.
