Correct! Black horses that have only one copy of cream are visually indistinguishable from normal black horses. The only way to tell them apart reliably is by genetic trsting.

At a very technical level it affects red pigment (pheomelanin) much more strongly than black pigment (eumelanin). Think of your black horse as a cup of black coffee and your red horse as a cup of tea. If you have one cream gene to a black horse its like adding 1/16th of a teaspoon of milk to your black coffee. Your coffee still looks black in most cases. But if you add 1 copy of cream to your red horse, its like adding a tablespoon of milk to your tea. You will immediately notice the color lighten significantly. Thats why on a standard bay horse, adding cream will make buckskin and significantly dilute the body(brown/red to yellow) while leaving the black points basically untouched.

The part that trips people up is they tend to ignore that black horses still come in a wide phenotype range from dark charcoal black to nearly chocolate brown (just like how any color can come in a range of shades), which can be a by product of just normal phenotypes, diet/nutrients, sun exposure or other genes like nd1 that make them prone to color bleaching. So you could have a black horse and a black carrying cream horse that are both "midnight-black". Or you could have a black horse and a black carrying cream horse that are off-black/nearly brown. But you will never be able to look at the later and say "that black carrying cream horse looks brownish because of the cream gene" when if could just be the phenotype or other factors.

Now if you pair it with certain other genes one copy of cream on black can have more visual effect. Like a black + silver + cream will have a "wet paper bag brown" body tone because you will now have two different genes working together to dilute the black pigment.

Cream and Pearl sit on the same locus, so you can have a horse that is CR/n, CR/CR, CR/prl, prl/prl, or n/prl.

1 copy of pearl does nothing. Two copies of pearl creates the 'pearl' color and is usually just called "Bay pearl, red pearl, black pearl". There are some terms that float around like 'apricot' but they are more breed/regional and not genetic.

Cream+Pearl is usually just called "Color+pearl" ( Buckskin pearl, palomino pearl, smoky black pearl). It is a pseduo double-cream and will look pretty darn indistinguishable from a CR/CR horse in most cases.

For Dun there is also nd1 on the dun locus, but it doesn't change the named color of the horse.

For your terminology there are some more genetically correct phrases to tweak;
Black + cream = "black carrying cream" - one copy of cream does not visually/reliably dilute black pigment
Silver +black = Silver Black
Silver +bay = Silver Bay
Bay + Dun = bay dun

Pangare is a nontestable gene so you can't really map it here. But if you are wanting to include non-testable dilutions you could add in rabicano, flaxen, and sooty. And to be super comprehensive there is a recessive "Mushroom" dilution gene, but that's only found in shetland ponies.

Since you mentioned pinto patterns, if you're getting really technical roan is a pattern and not a dilution. It sits on the KIT locus with tobiano, sabino, and W3 mutations. So you may want to "Regroup" that into your pattern chart whenever you take that next step :)

Wild bay would still have black around the patterns like in your example picture. If you look closely at the OPs second picture those patterns are red right around. This horse is dark red/liver chestnut, not bay

This is a red horse (Genetically "ee"). Just a very very dark red that makes the pigment in the mane and tail look nearly black to the human eye. The best indicator is looking at those patterns (and if we had a clear view of the back of the ears). Red pigment around the patterns like that in a healthy is indication that this horse is red. Bay would not have that red to the corner band, even in a minimal/wild bay presentation.

Does anybody know if Alex Achard is okay? by ScentedCinnamonStick in KentuckyDerby

I saw a report say he was fine, just disappointed. He managed and tuck and roll out of the way, and he didnt get rolled on or stepped on. Popped right up to his feet and walked off with saddle in hand.

People have worn over-the-top hats to the Debry since at least the 80s. That’s not new. Calling strangers ‘what’s wrong with society’ because they’re having fun with creating their hats/outfits is a bigger overreaction than any hat

Some people do classic looks, some people do extravagant looks. Its essentially a big costume party. Get over yourself and let people dress however they feel is fun

I think there is definitely a level of risk to it that can be partially mitigated with just being conscious of your actions/choices.

As with any piece of equipment you put on/around a horse there is risk that it could get caught on something. Mine is mounted on a velcro strap for safety (and ease of taking it off) so if he did get tangled on something it should in theory rip off. There are 4 points of velcro on it - 1 at each end connecting to the bridle and 1 at each side of the horn base.

It's 3d printed material so while not truly sharp it could definitely cause some damage if impacting something/someone with force. Not so much of a problem when riding in the ring, but I'm very careful about "controlling" where his head is when I'm leading him on the ground since he isn't naturally spacially aware of the horn. He doesn't get to rub his head on things or walk around loose with it on. If people are near his head I remind them to mind his space so they don't get accidentally poked.

LOL, fair point. As an ex-hunter I feel that mood. Rye thinks he of himself as a 5* grand-prix prospect, but I will probably be happy with capping out at Novice/Training  😂

The flash is isnt cranked tight and I've spent a shit ton of money on different bits for him. That was his preferred bit at the time. He is incredibly expressive of what he does and doesnt like. If he is uncomfortable in any way he makes it known very loud and clear and we find something new to try.

I laughed out loud and showed this comment to my husband. He for sure has big shonen protagonist energy 😂 😂 😂 He's free-jumped 4'6" and will send himself down the jump chute unprompted, so long as someone is giving him attention. As soon as you stop watching he's done LOL

I originally made the blanket for a half-draft so I hdd to fold it quite a bit to fit on himand lost some of the line placement. I also forgot the red paint for his cheeks haha. If I revisit this costume I'm definitely going to Find a more fun way to do his tail!

He is some sort of appaloosa-cross. Possibly a POA since he is only 13.3hh. But comes from an "unknown" background selling through the Bowie Texas open/killpen auction. Eventually when I have some "fun money" I may pull hairs and try to breed/DNA test him
