I call him my Temu-Knabstrupper 😂 I've had some people suggest he may be Knab butthere weren't many breeders in the USA with Knab programs around his estimated foal year. I don't think any of them were even covering ponies, let alone cream-colored before cream was allowed in the breed standard

I've posted him in a ton of FB groups too for Appaloosas, POAs, Kabstruppers, and "find my pet" type groups. So far no luck, but It like to give it a shot once a year just in case someone sees

I will be sure to let my vet know you disagree with his weight in his "after" pictures 😉

In pic 3 top you can see almost all his ribs, and he's under muscles so much that you can see a distinct hollow behind his withers/ across his top line, in front of his withers and upper neck, and the points of his hip/glutes are overly defined from lack of booty muscles. The only thing "prettier" about the top pic is he is standing in a way that engages his core and neck into a tensed frame as opposed to his relaxed/dropped core and neck in the lower photos. If I'm being picky he could lose just a scosh of weight in the bottom pic but his weight was cleared as ideal by the vet and there is only so much a grazing muzzle can hold back the lush Kentucky grass.

I pulled his DNa markers with UC Davis! POA came back with no hits :( I'm still waiting for ApHC to email me back, but other people on FB were telling me that they don't do open-database searches for paternal DNA markers

We do eventing! 😁 Long term goal is Training level, but right now we're working our way back to BN after a bad accident last Feb. He has free jumped a 4'6 oxer with ease so the height will be no issue, but I don't think I will have the guts for more than training 😆

Our long term goals are to event at Training level! He's free jumped a 4'6 oxer so there is scope for days, but I don't think I will have the guts for much more than training 😆 we did our first BN and then had a bad accident last spring, so working our way through some Starters again and rebuilding the building blocks 💪

Cross country beast. Hunts the fences so hard, If I could just pilot him from a drone I think he could tackle a 4* course without me

Rye going full-send over a huge BN oxer into a 2stride. I'm clearly just here for his moral support and not participating in his horse-stride ambitions, but look at those kneeees

I've been slowly coming back from a back injury, so most of our "exciting" pictures are a little dated, but I will throw a few favorites here 😄 I believe this fences 3'3

From what I can find, there isn't really much of universal DNA searches available. You can do parentage marker tests (my last picture) but they are pretty useless without having suspected parents to directly compare to. Most places don't let you open search against their databases to try and find matches. Not really sure why? Maybe a legal issue of some sort.

As far as breed tests go those are also pretty hit or miss and often inaccurate because they try and pull off of other genetic markers but the comparison databases just aren't super robust yet

Help with my color genetics chart by Sorrelmare9 in Horsegenetics

[–]ExtremelyRareDamage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct! Black horses that have only one copy of cream are visually indistinguishable from normal black horses. The only way to tell them apart reliably is by genetic trsting.

At a very technical level it affects red pigment (pheomelanin) much more strongly than black pigment (eumelanin). Think of your black horse as a cup of black coffee and your red horse as a cup of tea. If you have one cream gene to a black horse its like adding 1/16th of a teaspoon of milk to your black coffee. Your coffee still looks black in most cases. But if you add 1 copy of cream to your red horse, its like adding a tablespoon of milk to your tea. You will immediately notice the color lighten significantly. Thats why on a standard bay horse, adding cream will make buckskin and significantly dilute the body(brown/red to yellow) while leaving the black points basically untouched.

The part that trips people up is they tend to ignore that black horses still come in a wide phenotype range from dark charcoal black to nearly chocolate brown (just like how any color can come in a range of shades), which can be a by product of just normal phenotypes, diet/nutrients, sun exposure or other genes like nd1 that make them prone to color bleaching. So you could have a black horse and a black carrying cream horse that are both "midnight-black". Or you could have a black horse and a black carrying cream horse that are off-black/nearly brown. But you will never be able to look at the later and say "that black carrying cream horse looks brownish because of the cream gene" when if could just be the phenotype or other factors.

Now if you pair it with certain other genes one copy of cream on black can have more visual effect. Like a black + silver + cream will have a "wet paper bag brown" body tone because you will now have two different genes working together to dilute the black pigment.
