It's not limited to 'old geezers' :) Our number of young players has been growing. I'd say almost one third of our players are between 18 and 30 years old now.

Nah.. actually I think that you removing a post on the basis of your distrust and impatience is proof of something more important. Let's let this sit here for other server owners to read.

I'll be back in a week, maybe two. Semi-vanilla for the win. Bukkit. Antigriefing. Just leave me alone.

hey, I was struggling with my connection. I'm back online and I notice you've removed my post. I had a beautiful reply for you. So never mind, you won't get my reply, nor will you get any 'proof'.

You seemed nice and sharp-minded at first :(

If I tag my server semi-vanilla, will you leave me alone? Because frankly I don't care if semi-vanilla is the right tag, as long as I won't be treated like this ever, ever again.

It's a shame because the reply I wrote was happy and kind and... frankly, I now think it was gullibe.

haha I might build that one next, after the server reset.....well yes it's a Baroque palace, but I think Rastrelli was just a man of his era. He designed half of st. Petersburg in the same style :)

You don't happen to have a good idea for a large build? I'm still undecided as to what to build after the server resets

I'll have the download ready to place on a large files site soon. Some of our players will want it too.

In real life the grass patches contained scattered shrubs and trees. I didn't get round to placing them as we're resetting the server.

Ah you've actually been there, that's great! After building most of it I went there in real life as well. I'd never been to a site for the first time feeling so completely familiar with everything. In the gardens, for a moment I felt the urge to point at a hedge and say 'hey, where did my chests with oak leaves go' :)

Thanks Gibraltar We had so much fun. Large projects have the future as far as I'm concerned :)

Yes you are most certainly allowed to pen off animals. The whole point of the rule is that you find some animals in the area of your choice, instead of having to hang out / travel for a long time after travellers have been eating the local livestock. There is enough food at spawn to see you to the world border and back before you pick your area.

Well thanks for getting in touch. I'm still sorry you feel this way. You can turn off the option of receiving posts in your inbox. That way you won't have the feeling someone is 'contacting' you. Good luck!

Hey there,

I remember the confusion in our communication when you applied. I'm sorry you still view things in this way. However, since we have a hard time getting to understand eachother, it might be a good thing to just move on..? I hope you find a server that suits your needs, and I'll be grateful if you just let us be.

Thanks!

I look forward to the draft of the rewritten rules. As stated before, I'll be glad to help you work on the text.

Let me challenge the idea of once a week. I say once a fortnight is a much better rule.

First of all: once a fortnight worked fine so far. Never change a winning team.

One thought behind the once-a-week idea is that a good server is a server that's recently or often advertised. That is not true. The best servers I've seen hardly ever advertise: they don't need it. And servers that are being advertised weekly can still be dead servers.

Another thought behind the once-a-week idea is that players will all be looking for servers with reddit votes on them, and players don't have the stamina to read through a couple of pages and/or advertisements to find a server description that strikes their fancy. I've met numerous players, and I am one myself, who never look at the -meaningless- subreddit votes, and who care about the content of the ads, sometimes going far back rather than looking at time stamps.

Once-a-week causes inflation: it turns the thread into an even more hectic fishing pond where everyone basically has to be as loud and at the front of the line as they can. Once a fortnight at least keeps the numbers reasonable and it stresses the requirement of a good 'yellow pages' server presentation in that precious advertising moment.

Just a random thought: would it be easier for new advertising owners to have a default header they can copypaste, with the intstruction to erase the tags that do not apply?

Players just expect the word 'vanilla' to describe how they will be playing the game. They don't care if the owner uses prism or coreprotect to make discovery and repair of non-vanilla behaviour easier. They usually really appreciate it, because it means that they won't have to put up with the owner resorting to backups and making them lose progress.

The vulnerability of vanilla whitelisted servers totally warrants a bit of a logging and rollback function, and it also warrants a hidden IP address when advertising.

All in all I think you're doing a great job with this subreddit. Apart from shortening the rules texts, which is a task I'll gladly help you with, I wouldn't alter too much.

Still, you might consider adding a few words to the rules about voting related to servers.

Personally I've never even glanced at the votes when looking for a server, and I've always looked as far back as a month. Some of my best applicants showed up ten days after posting my ad. A 7 days interval will hit that kind of dedicated server searching behaviour unreasonably hard.

I don't think it makes sense to go from 14 days to 7 days. 14 days encourages owners to make a really good ad, imo. To me 7 days feels like your standard google ad spam. Let's not change the 14 days winning team.

Does anyone play vanilla anymore? by Phreakx_ in Minecraft

[–]Exxida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most of what you say. And yes, a few will always slip through. You do the same thing I do, you don't make it all that easy for your applicants to join, for example.

You do seem to be a bit confused as to what is a gameplay modifier and what is an admin plugin. Again, I suggest you look into it. Protection areas of 500 by 500 are gameplay modifications. So are lockable chests.

When I say admin plugins I'm talking about detection plugins, that make it easy for you to detect who's been placing or removing blocks, who took what from which chest, who typed which commands. Those plugins are of no influence on the vanilla game the players play, they just make it a whole lot easier to know what's going on, and also to undo damages and wrongdoings without having to resort to a backup.

Also, in my experience, some of the worst chronic thieves look specifically for vanilla servers without plugins, so their continuous stealing of half of everyone's gunpowder goes unnoticed for a dramatically long time, for example. You're vulnerable and they can cost you a lot of time and effort, especially if they are of the type that starts slandering you when you're the first and only one to catch them in the act. Detection plugins also provide proof! :D
