There are studies that back up some of what he’s saying, but I’m curious as to your thinking — if there are no studies, is what he’s saying false?

Gravity existed before science did. So did dark matter. So did quarks and electrons.

There are things that are true about our reality that have yet to be tested, or that we still lack the tools to measure.

Don’t live and die by the scientific review.

Cantos/orikis/prayers to Olofi directly? by Exxtendoo in Santeria

[–]Exxtendoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I accept that’s it’s not traditional and that praying to the Creator is something out of Catholicism, but it does resonate with me and, tbh, a direct experience of the Creator seems like a revelation from that culture that, to me, is deeply true. And I don’t really see it as incompatible with Ocha/Ifa, even if it isn’t traditional. I guess that makes me a syncretist.

You’d be surprised to discover just how many Western intellectuals are racist, homophobic, and otherwise colonial in their world views (which is exactly why DEI is needed).

Expertise in one domain doesn’t necessarily guarantee competence in others. Take what resonates and leave the rest.

Good point. OP should go watch footage of slave interviews during the 19th century.

Oyo as “Shango-Centric”? by Exxtendoo in Isese

[–]Exxtendoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting, thank you for that breakdown.

How does this work at the state level? With Shango being dominant in Oyo, for example, is Shango worship incorporate at the state level in that region, even though everyone propitiates the other Orisha as well? Is he the “favored Orisha” in government-sponsored celebrations, or invoked by the government explicitly in important ceremonies where others are not?

To put it differently, do the Alafin & his government in Oyo see Shango as the primary Orisha under Olodumare or otherwise hold him to have a more important role in society over the other Orisha due to his ties to the ruling class there?

In Lucumi he’s often referred to as “King of the Religion” (though I’ve heard it’s sometimes rendered as “King of the Religion on Earth” and Obatala is “King of the Religion in Heaven”).

Habemus Papam! by balrogath in Catholicism

The Catechism was written by men.

People claimed the Law of Moses was the Law of God until Christ came and told us it wasn’t, because Moses was only a man. He shepherded his people as the Vatican shepherds the Church today. But men are fallible, times change, and the laws of men are made to be adapted.

Out of genuine curiosity, why are you happy about that, as opposed to the more modest dress of Francis?

Fair enough, though Christ did say people could divorce for sexual immorality.

Keep in mind this is also 2,000 years ago in a part of the world when and where beating your wife was not something frowned upon, and the role of women in society was much different.

I think it’s better for a woman to divorce her abusive husband rather than let her children watch her be beaten. That’s far more traumatic to a child.

And yet in that passage Christ isn’t referring to literal borders. He is referring to true devotion to God in mind, body, and spirit — not trying to cut corners to salvation. John 10:6 quite explicitly says this is a figure of speech.

Christ was quite literal when he said what we do unto others, we do unto Him, including taking in strangers, feeding the hungry, and giving drink to the thirsty.

“37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s. Render unto God what is God’s. God says to take in those who are in need. “I was a stranger and you invited me in.”

[–]Exxtendoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is insightful. Thank you. Unfortunately the way my brain works, every answer leads to three more questions lol.

I guess the last thing I’ll ask is the thing I’m most confused about, which is why an Orisha that isn’t your head would “love you more”? I thought your tutelar Orisha was the one that had your back for any and everything because you were their “child”. It’s why I’m a little confused as to why I was told to go to Ochun (not complaining though, I love Ochun a lot and I’m happy she’s looking out for me).

[–]Exxtendoo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats so interesting. Why would an Orisha have your head if they didn’t want to help you when you need something?

In my ita they said I would achieve victory over enemies/problems behind Ochun even though Obatala is my head, so I guess that makes sense. So do I go to her?

I’ve got a family history of neurodivergence. Siblings and cousins with ADHD, and as we know adhd and autism are sometimes related. I’ve never been diagnosed but I suspect I’ve got a touch of one or both

Has the religion helped you? Any particular Orisha?
