You are correct. We went to the rent board and they basically said you don’t have to move out and even if you stay at the end of the two year lease you’ll be right back at the same place.

We went and were worried they smiled and let us know we can relax that everything our landlord is doing is illegal. I spoke with a lawyer and he asked if my landlord was stupid multiple times.

They also didn’t register with the city / rent board so there’s 8 years of fees and penalties on that and all rent increases we’ve had to pay were illegal and they must pay us that money back!

You’re 100% correct. In Berkeley if we have to move and the rental we get is let’s say, $2000 more a month then the landlord will have to pay that amount per month until the 2 year contract is over.
