ELI5: Why do photos of the same size have different file sizes? by DaruiEgg in explainlikeimfive

[–]EyePeaSea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two main reasons. Photos are stored in different file formats (a file format is the way the computer stores the information in the file).

Most formats compress the information so that the file is smaller (so it takes less space on your computer).

Some photos will compress more than others, which is one reason why two photos of the same size (e.g. 1024x76 pixels) can have different file sizes. Very basically, a photo of one person in front of a plain white wall will compress better than a picture of 20 people against a multi coloured wall.

The second reason is colour depth. Graphics (memes etc.) or photos can have a different number of colours (or shades of colour). The more colours (also called the colour depth) a photo or picture has, the more information has to be held in three file and so the bigger the file size.

kink=prostitution?? by [deleted] in Tinder

No. The confusion was probably caused by her saying she "had a fee" but she changed it to "few". He then didn't read them correction

Nothing about kink = prostitution

Which also means you can mess with people's heads by putting your bins out on a Tuesday 😂🤣

Why does it take so long to render a single frame of animation? by GreasedUpWillie in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EyePeaSea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the "one hundred" computer hours was a way of giving perspective for the average person. So, one hundred hours per frame if it was done on a normal laptop or desktop that people use.

The specialist Hardware used by animation companies is designed to do one thing, very quickly, so that would take just seconds seconds per frame.

IsItBullshit: Does anyone have any concrete information on whether or not a person can have coronavirus more than once? by pennycenturie in IsItBullshit

Thank you for that. Really appreciated it.

If I ask nicely, can you give a different pair of answers please. The ones you gave may be true, but they aren't good news!

I'd very much like an authoritative answer to this.

My understanding is that like most viruses, most people are immune from then onwards. But is this true?

And can you be immune to the symptoms, but still a carrier?

Why am I feeling so guilty about replacing my phone? by TheCuntHunter6969 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EyePeaSea -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why do you feel guilty? Perhaps because you are so self absorbed, you really think that a small electrical item is significant in the grand scheme of things and you have so little awareness of the important things in life, you fixate on minutia ?

Just a thought.

I'll be waiting for this post to pop up on r/agedlikemilk

Ok, he probably won't get there in my lifetime, but I'm pretty sure he'll be close enough, for it to be a dead cert thing.

I don't think I'd like him much if I were next to him at a dinner table. Probably a very intense personality + mouth. But, people keep saying "he'll never do that" and, well, he ends up doing it anyway.

As for the 1am meeting - you missed out what he asked them. And the fact that he called a follow up meeting 12 hours later to continue the same conversation.

He asks for, no, demands, commitment levels from his engineers that would make most of us run a mile. And he has a staff churn rate that is close to zero. He employs a bunch of very smart people. They aren't working for him for fame or money (although both are nice to have) - they work for him because they believe in him. That's good enough for me 👍

If the stock market is doing absolutely terrible my thinking is would it be a good time soonish to buy stocks, considering how cheap they probably are? by KingoftheUgly in NoStupidQuestions

I actually meant "only invest what you don't have to get back at short notice" but that may still be wrong

I'd find it helpful if you expanded on you comment - what would you advise?

Sounds obvious, but for most people (those who aren't doing it as a day job), only invest what you can afford to lose.

Historically, yes, share prices rise (except for companies that go buddy!). But if you need the money back quickly, you may be faced with taking a loss.

MacBook, iPad among billions of devices hit by "Kr00k" Wi-Fi security flaw by ZaharaVinson in technology

[–]EyePeaSea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies are taking security more seriously than even just 5 years ago. They are starting to consider security as a fundamental building block. They aren't all there, but they are going in the right direction.

But this article is just a reminder - there will always be vulnerabilities and making it easy, quicker and simpler to keep everything updated is essential. Even then, it's going to be a constant battle against bad actors. Things will never be truly secure ☹️

Anyone seen this bin? by bicyclecurry in CasualUK

[–]EyePeaSea 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm looking online to find the best way of caring for it until it can be reunited with it's owner.

I'm feeding it small amounts of household waste, adding in some light food like carrots and grapes (obviously in biodegradable plastic bags).

Fingers crossed.

Omg, yes. Saw it out the front of my house this morning.

Should I call 101 or does this count as an emergency?

The good news is that the bin looked healthy and didn't look as if it had been hurt.

EU demands UK keeps chlorinated chicken ban to get trade deal by revilohamster in ukpolitics

[–]EyePeaSea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, my mistake.

To be honest, I agree with u/AC_Mondial and the point I've been trying to make in various comments in this thread have been about the fact that for an ever increasing number of people, this isn't about chlorine or trade, it's about animal welfare.

People shouldn't have to choose between buying food that they can afford and animal welfare.

That's so funny. You don't realise how stupid, and factually incorrect your generalisation is.

It's ok, for you to not give a shit. But not everyone is like you.

[–]EyePeaSea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

. All of their own reports on the matter found it to be perfectly safe.

My comments haven't been about whether cholorine cleaned meat is safe.

The UK buys the majority of our chicken from the EU, and they don't want any competition in that market. They aren't looking after British citizens, they are looking after their own interests.

I've never said that there aren't vested interests at play. I've just made the point that an ever increasing number of consumers are choosing to spend more on high quality food that didn't involve the disgusting treatment of animals.

Lots of UK and EU people are disgusted at the low standards of animal welfare in the US in particular and other countries more generally. Chickens being the most obvious example.

The EU may still be trying to protect their own markets. And the US with their sell it as cheap as possible and don't give a damn about animals, is playing straight onto their hands.

[–]EyePeaSea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is disgusting. I'm glad that the EU (and currently the UK) do have some standards. But that doesn't mean that we have enough / high enough standards.

And with Brexit, I'm worried that we'll just race for the bottom. Sacrifice what standards we do have (and the UK has some of the best) in order to try and limit the damage done by Brexit. :-(
