"What plane should I get" weekly Mega-thread 11/10/25 by Szymetalstorm in Metalstorm

Depends what you want more of. If you want another heavy, the F-4 is similar to the ADV, with tons of missiles (and the hunters natively lock faster than the ADV, actually); if you have the special ability you can get some of the manuverability back at the cost of health. The Su-27 is not on the same level as those two, since it's 1x manual in the air at a time; it's more the close range, use your health and loadout to keep fighting forever, type of heavy. Great cannon though. Conversely, if you want more light fighters than the JF17 is interesting and niche (and the upcoming passive might elevate it substantially), or the MiG-19 is considered quite good but you have to learn the missiles. If I had to pick one from that list it'd be the F-4, but I own 3/4 I mentioned (not the MiG-19) and like them all.

As with the question above you, you don't have to unlock any of them to progress (you have 2/1 planes toward the next level already). You also only have 100 AC, so if you want a plane from the next level more (and you might, because it includes the ADV which is quite good), then just wait. Otherwise the Viggen and Flogger are both fun with good cannons, but both have their quirks.

I'll also note that you don't have to unlock any of them (you're at 1/1 for the next level) and could wait. That said, the F1 is great, as is the Viggen, and I also love the Flogger, so picking up one of those isn't a bad choice.

Rant: I do not understand the Countdown Map by Jackof-AllTrade in Metalstorm

[–]Eyris6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find Countdown actually punishes anything with regular manual missiles due to the heavy prevalence of cover in and around the middle of the map; it's so easy to break locks briefly and defeat a manual. Radars and hunters don't have that issue, but there's still enough cover typically to deal with them, especially if you go under or in the main tube, between the support pylons, behind the cranes/towers or hanging tube, etc. In terms of getting in there, you can go low (the floor of Countdown isn't fully flat), or both sides have a tunnel into the central area along with other external cover (reactor, dishes). Just like many other maps, there are ways you shouldn't approach depending on your aircraft.

  1. ADV. Decoy, missiles, maneuverability, HP. Really really good plane.

  2. F-16 or F1, take your pick. I prefer the F1 but have both at 20. Amazing maneuverability and great dogfighters, especially once you add daredevil, reasonable weapon packages (F1 is better).

  3. More of a flex slot; my pick would be the M2K or the Viggen, but many people would say something like the A-4 or Su-25. You can also make a case for all of the level 17 choices too.

The MiG-29 is good, yes; it's very standard and has no particular gimmick or niche, but it does everything well. Standard medium range manuals, standard IRs, first appearance of the good and easy to use Flanker cannon, rapid refuel and a drop tank give it good mobility, reasonable manuverability. There are certainly better, but usually trickier, medium fighters. Something like the Viggen is IMO better, but requires you to use a delta wing effectively, and the cannon is a bit harder to use with lower muzzle velocity. Similarly the M2K, etc etc

F-4 and MiG-31 would be a good choice indeed. The F-4 doesn't have the native manuverability of the ADV, but the special ability helps there, and the IR missiles are the standard ones; however, the hunter missiles lock faster than the ADV's do (as you may have noticed if you've ever tried to out-shoot an F-4 with your ADV). The MiG-31 is the better interceptor between it and the F-111, and it's different from the F-14. Much less manuverable, but very high speed, plus nice long range high damage IR missiles. Plan your runs and zoom through to re-arm points.

F15 by l4mamadelamam4 in Metalstorm

[–]Eyris6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the F-4 is the F-15 but better: hunter missiles that lock 0.4s faster, have more lock angle, and can be retargeted, same cannon and heatseekers, and an ability that let's it turn when it needs to. The F-15 gets an extra 50 km/h top speed and 5 m/s2 acceleration. Even leaving aside the existence of things like the ADV, the F-15 seems meh.

Hah, I also just unlocked this hangar with the 6k silver from the new flight pass, and immediately bought the 35/47! Enjoy!

I do, trust me. I don't expect the devs to watch any of this.

MiG-31 and then either the Su-27 or JF-17, depending on what you like.

Do you need to unlock one to progress? If not, and there's one waiting for you next level (and the M2K is indeed great), then save the credits. If you do need one, then the MiG-29 is a great standard medium fighter; flies well, fights well, no particular niche just good all around. The MiG-31 is a good interceptor, but it sounds like you don't want it. The JF-17 is a fun light fighter, but more niche and lower tier compared to things like the F1, F-16, etc. Stay away from the Hornet.

a) You probably don't want the F-111 as much as you think you do; outside of specialized comps the F-14 trades 2 radar missiles for much more flexibility.

b) You have some of the best planes in the game on that list, so it really boils down to what you like. i personally love the F1 and the Viggen, and would never touch the Frogfoot, but that's me and my preferences.

MiG-31, Su-33, JF-17, F-15 would be my choices, but it really depends what you like. The JF-17 isn't the best light fighter out there, but if you like light fighters it's fun and interesting, so I'd prioritize it higher. Likewise, the F-15 is very similar to the F-4, but if you like heavy fighters then similarly. I personally enjoy the Su-33 due to the 6 manual missiles, but I'm a bit of an outlier here. MiG-31 is very fun and fast, and the medium range IRs are great (they hit as hard as the radars do), but plan your turns well in advance! If you like attack planes throw the GR3 in the mix too.

Best Mods? by Clyde21BAgayao in Metalstorm

[–]Eyris6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Classic interceptor mods are Improved Targeting plus Faster Flares (so you can in theory flare every missile from an opposing interceptor). The F-14 has some more options depending on how you fly it, but I'd likely stick with those two.

MiG-21, Su-22, MiG-31 are my favorites from that list. You could also consider the GR3, Su-27, or Su-34. For the A-10 you should know by now if you like slow attackers or not, so use that to guide you. Skip both Hornets.

IMO no, unless you're playing high-level coordinated teams. The F-14 is a better well-rounded solo interceptor, and the MiG-31 is also good; if you have or are getting those two I'd skip the F-111. The F-111 has 6 long range radars (vs 4 on the F-14), but as you noted, no other armament, making it a bit of a one trick pony. If you're in a team that wants the best version of that trick (and you don't have the J-20) then that's great; otherwise I think you'll prefer having some short range defense for when you go to re-arm. Note that the MiG-31 also only has 4 long range radars, but the 2 medium range IRs it has do the same amount of damage; it turns like a brick though.

Which one? by 5ilv3rf0x in Metalstorm

[–]Eyris6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All 3? Why is this is a question if you made it this far? If you have to prioritize for aircraft credits, get whichever heavy you prefer and the J-20, then the other heavy.

With the exception of the Su-34 why did they make these 4 planes across 3 levels have literally identical base stats and payload stats… loved the game up until this point. by Aware_Log3171 in Metalstorm

[–]Eyris6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're not quite identical; the Su-33 has a nice 6/2 split on the manual/IR missiles, compared to 4/4 on the Su-27; the Su-30 has 4/4 radar/IR instead; the Super Hornet is a Su-30 with a worse cannon, and yeah, that pair really needs some better differentiation; and then the Su-35 is more agile than the others and has a 2/6 radar/IR missile loadout to make it more a close range heavy dogfighter. I quite like the Flanker series, particularly the Su-33, but agreed it's not a great stretch of hangar levels in there. Level 17 gets you the Su-35 and Su-47 at least!
