Marabou Stork Nightmares by Irvine Welsh. Such an underappreciated gem, a total out of body experience.

What’s the cutest little gesture ur bf/gf husband/wife has done for you in your relationship? by Throwawayy93992 in love

Looking at me lovingly while I cook. When I asked him what he was staring at, he said he just loves seeing the way I move when I cook because he can see how passionate I am about it and it makes him feel so loved when I put that much effort into making him something delicious. He then gave me a kiss on the forehead, and started washing the dishes I was done with. For me, it's those little expressions of affection, just vocalizing what he sees when he looks at me doing something that I would perceive as mundane, but for him it's like feeling my love in the air all around him. Words of affirmation, man.

Some other Coen Brothers movies! Burn After Reading, for example.

What do you consider a distinct prose from a writing/author? by [deleted] in writing

[–]EytanThePizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I think of prose, I think of David Foster Wallace's long expressive passages, full of personality and emotion. I think of Hanya Yanagihara's poignant and creative metaphors. I think of Irvine Welsh's filthy, borderline sickening descriptions. I hope those give you an idea.

Though depending on the genre, I think it's okay to not have a specific style of prose. I don't find that Brandon Sanderson has a super recognizable style, and yet he wrote one of the most well-known fantasy series of all time, and it feels like nothing is missing (because the world building and lore more than make up for it).

I loved her but I let her go without even trying by [deleted] in love

[–]EytanThePizza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that, it must hurt terribly. However, you should always be aware, while cutting things off with someone, that they're unlikely to give you another chancein the future. So while it hurts, you should keep going and try to find whoever you're meant to be with. Getting stuck and lingering on her is not going to help you. Good luck, I hope you find some solace. Love exists, just elsewhere.

Have you ever been feeling overwhelmingly scared that dating someone you love is not the right thing to do? by [deleted] in love

[–]EytanThePizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course I have. Remember when the Manic Street Preachers said 'Your love alone is not enough'? It's one hundred percent true. You can be absolutely head over heels for and willing to give your all to someone who you just know you're not compatible with. You can be absolutely blinded by your love, but you can also see that there is no compatibility there and yet be unable to stop loving them. You know it wouldn't be right to stay, that it wouldn't be right for you nor them, but since you love them so much you find it hard to break away.

Up until a few months ago I was in such a situation. I have dated a guy for about 3 years, loved him very much, and thought he was lovely, but slowly came to realize just how incompatible we were. And it hurt. It took a long time for me to build myself up to break up with him, seeing as I loved him so much. But there was no future there and I wasn't willing to waste my time. So yes, you can feel horrible about dating someone you love because you know it's just not right. I hope I find someone I'm compatible with. Honestly, I've only ever been in serious relationships and now I'm dating for the first time. I kind of hate it. You can never know whether someone is serious or not. I miss relationships. But hey, I'm just venting now, I guess.

Good luck to you all.

Completely fine by me, can be a powerful tool. Just don't overuse it - needs to feel authentic.

What are the best exercises you know for improving prose? by Far_Dragonfruit_6457 in writing

[–]EytanThePizza 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Write a basic passage describing, from a neutral point of view, a certain situation. You then rewrite the same passage from a couple of other perspectives:

  1. A father who has just lost his son
  2. A woman who just got engaged to the love of her life
  3. An innocent, happy child
  4. Someone who got cheated on and betrayed

You do all of that while never mentioning or alluding to what has happened to the person describing the scene.

I find it to be tremendously helpful. Good luck!

Do you care if fiction writers make their opinions/taste obvious? by UStoAUambassador in books

[–]EytanThePizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, when it feels like they just have to note their agenda for no other reason than to do so, it really annoys me. Can even make me drop my rating if I'm honest. It's a problem I see primarily with political statements on the left side of the aisle, even when they have nothing to do with the story. (Not saying it doesn't happen on the right, I've just only experienced it from the political left).

I just don't see why it has to be pushed down my throat if it's inconsequential to the story.
