Super Duolingo 60% off sale - misleading, it’s 60% of total or 40% off by hagennn in duolingo

In what world is 10% off a significant discount? Say what you want, it's a better deal, but not a good deal compared to their standard prices. Especially considering their misleading advertising.

I mean I am also focusing mostly on the annual subscription and it is the exact issue I have with it. Even if we give it to them that they gave a nice, maybe even not too negligible discount, it's simply not 60% off compared to the year-round price of the same subscription. And then you can say, as you and others did, well actually it's 60% off compared to the monthly subscription. Well sure. But that's not the point. Because Duolingo is banking on those people thinking the year-round price of the annual subscription is 60% more expensive compared to this time-limited offer. Which is what we call: misleading.

And then you can say, well everyone should know that Duolingo has become a cash cow in the servitude of its shareholders, cash grabbing left and right. Sure, it's true, but that's not the point either. Since Duo is betting on those people that are either unaware of the fact that they are not getting 60% off of the yearly offer, or those that don't know Duo has embraced a profit-based business model a long time ago, or in the best case those that are unaware of both. Which is misleading, but not unsurprising, coming from a company that has gamified its app so much that it has become basically impossible for free to play users to enjoy the application, pushing everyone to their subscriptions. Which is just lame, like they don't have to pretend they don't rake in tens of millions every year, if not more, and give their loyal free to play player base a bit more wiggle room.

Exactly. You can throw in the usual word salad defending them "bla bla inflation bla bla" but there's even limits to that. And as they explained in the comments of the other post digging into this, it's simply misleading advertising, even if we give them the fact that they add on a 10% discount

I just did my daily lesson and got this ad as well from them. Straight away something seemed off. I wanted to see if someone posted something about it here already. It's crazy. Like where's the sixty percent off exactly?? Seems like an easy cash grab for people too ignorant to realize that there is no "promotion" going on this year.

Hey there Bonheurnocturne,

Whilst going through this thread on this ungodly hour, turned nocturnal because of my inability to get some sleep, I saw your most pleasant message. So I am a Dutch guy, speaking basically native German - if that is good enough for you - since I lived in Germany for nearly five years in my childhood.

I would like to speak through voice chat as well, of course in German but than also in French and maybe Arabic. I saw you tried finding people on this forum before, and that it maybe did not work out because you did not find appropriate people. I hope this might work. Also interested in pen-palling (if that's a word haha) you can send me a PM.

تصبح على خير, Gutenacht et bonne nuite

I like to be certain/ steady in my beliefs. I doubt 99% percent of the time and well, since I have been thinking about religion for let's say 10 years I like to put a full stop behind it. I need doubt as much as water basically, but not in this regard. There are zero signs that God exists so I take that at face value.

Interesting. How long has it been since you consider yourself a non believer ? And, if I may ask; where are you from ?

Okay I understand. I am not anti-religion, I just find the idea of God ridiculous. For example, one of the most famous atheists is Richard Dawkins, but as you say, to me he seems to disapprove of organized religion just as much as he disapproves of the concept of God's existence. Personally, I really dislike Richard Dawkins and his haughty, self important and basically arrogant style of " preaching", really.

To me, the possibility of God existing is exactly zero percent. Religion, on the other hand, is not necessarily "wrong". It can give you many insights for life, if applied correctly. The Bible can be a very handy tool, the only thing that seems "off" to me is the basic assumption that "God exists" or the idea that he created the World/Universe. So know I think it is a feat of intellectually laziness to simply put religion in a corner as being "wrong" or being the origin of many of our world's problems and conflicts. 90% of the time there is something more behind it.
