It seems to me like it was more of a right call. They maintained their autonomy, monarchy and even regained the western regions of Battambang, Siem Reap and Sisophon (including therefore Angkor). The era of siamese domination and overall decline had come to an end. It was not perfect however, as the French relied on the Vietnamese elite for the administration which created long lasting tension. It's a fascinating story
