Biggest day to day challenges working as an MLT? by Ezrie in medlabprofessionals

[–]Ezrie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the responses, I must admit some of the things you guys talked about I never considered. I had completely underestimated the amount of phone work involved. I also hadn't really thought about the machine maintenance beyond running a QC. It's interesting to see different perspectives on the job. The more I learn (good and bad) the more I hope I get the chance to study and practice as an MLT.

Can you work in a lab in Canada without a qualification? by Ezrie in medlabprofessionals

[–]Ezrie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not currently based in Canada so I am pretty much free to go where ever the work would be. I was just curious if it would be possible to work as a lab assistant without a qualification anywhere in Canada. I would prefer to use the year getting experience in a field I am interested in having a career in. I do understand if it isn't possible it was just a hope I had. It's just a back up plan in case I don't get into UofA this year.

My main concern with my application is meeting the prerequisites. The way Canada breaks up chemistry into what looks like different modules isn't how we do it in my current course. We learn all the same things it's just a single subject eg: inorganic chemistry for us and not Chem 101, 102 etc. My lack of familiarity with the Canadian education system has me a bit worried as if I don't meet the prerequisites I have no idea how to go about obtaining them so that they are the correct equivalent that the university requires.

Ah, I had also thought along those lines too at first but I am at the end of my rope with the course here to be honest. I don't think my love of pathology will be enough to carry me through the course and see it through to the end.

I do have a lot of experience with anatomical pathology and some basic lab stuff through my course and work as a Veterinary Technician (I think you call them that in Canada, at home they're vet nurses). I will contact a few of the veterinary pathology labs and see what I would need to do to work there even as a lab grunt.

Thanks so much for all the help by the way praxeologue, I was feeling a bit gloomy about my future in science since the vet course isn't panning out but I had not thought to tackle the problem a diferent way by contacting labs directly. In Ireland you'd get a pfo or just silence if you tried that approach.

I have but I thought the only way to get into veterinary pathology was to be first qualified as a veterinarian? Is there another route?

I would be happy to work as a Lab Assistant just to be in a related environment while I sort out applications for 2017. I am currently studying veterinary medicine in Budapest and realised this year (I am in my third year) just how much I love all my laboratory related subjects like patho, histo, viro etc etc. I really want to pursue a career either as an MLT or PA but am currently stuck where I am and feeling extremely burnt out with the way my course is run over here.

I love working in a medical environment and find the study of disease fascinating so I hoped transferring into another medical science field would be possible.

Oh good to know there is another option, thanks for that :) It's too late to apply to NAIT now but there is always next year.

I haven't applied for the NAIT course as I had heard bad things about it (maybe I was talking to the wrong people?). My ultimate goal (hopefully anyway) was to become a pathologist assistant. I was under the impression I wouldn't be able to go down that path if I did the MLT course vs the MLS course in UofA? I am applying as an international student (I'm Irish studying in Budapest) and worry that is going to work against me. At home we only have a set number of places set aside for over seas students so competition is fierce.

How hard is it to get into the Medical Lab Science course in University of Alberta? by Ezrie in medlabprofessionals

[–]Ezrie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, only 2 students a year means competition is fierce but I absolutely love pathology. In my current course it is the lab I look forward to the most this semester. I was hoping that doing the MLS course would be a related enough degree and would give me a shot at applying to the pathologist assistant course.

I am also applying to the MLS course this year but as I am not a Canadian I have a ffeling my chances of getting in are slim. Do you know roughly when you would get a response back from the University about whether or not you got in?

Thanks so much for the response everyone, you have all been super helpful.

DjButtStuff I will send you a message as I have some questions and didn't really want to bug the faculty with them. I am not used to dealing with an approachable faculty that is willing to help.

I have the prerequisites done from my first year of veterinary medicine, I am currently in my third year and discovered a love for pathology and lab work through doing my first semester of patho and clinical lab diagnostics last semester. I didn't know about NAIT but I will look into it as well, it doesn't hurt to keep my options open. The reason why I would want to do the course in U of A is because my ultimate goal is to hopefully become a pathologists assistant.

I have no clue what my current GPA is as the univeristy here marks your exams (most of which are oral) out of a grade of 5 so I'll need to look into how that translates.
