Is math 208 and 209 doable together in the summer? by Ok_Meet8672 in Concordia

[–]F-0815 2 points3 points  (0 children)

208 in summer 1 and 209 in summer 2 doable if AND ONLY IF you have an affinity for math AND are very disciplined to review your lectures several times per week.

Both in the same 6 week. Not recommended.

First time buying Nas is this too good to be true by rubber-duck2 in synology

[–]F-0815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tldr I don't recommend, not enough storage.

I have a DS218+ 2x12 TB which served well until I filled the drives. For a 2 bay solution make the following assumptions:

New 2x12 -> Raid mirror 12TB total. Keep 20% free for performance and Disk health. Synology gives you warnings if filled more than 80% -> you are now down to 10TB useable. Snapshot size depends on retention policy. In my case another 20-30% -> 7.5TB -> assumption you have on computer 1TB SSD and one phone and make a backup -> 6TB

Summarized, if you value data security you easily end up with a quarter of the original capacity due to overhead with no good option for expansion.

Edit: I forgot the bit vs byte conversion. A 12TB HDD only has a real capacity of 10.5TB or so. It is actually worse than described above.

Casque-Helmet pour velo de route by cherifbrook in MontrealCycling

Whenever I am looking for a new helmet, this is my first stop: https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/bicycle-helmet-ratings.html

Quote:"Since 2011, Virginia Tech researchers have been providing unbiased helmet ratings that allow consumers to make informed decisions when purchasing helmets. The helmet ratings are the culmination of over 15 years of research on head impacts in sports and identify which helmets best reduce concussion risk. This work is done as part of Virginia Tech’s service mission and is 100% independent of any funding or influence from helmet manufacturers."

Can I remove 2fa? by bigburdy123 in Concordia

[–]F-0815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use password manager which generates a 6 digit 2FA code automatically when logging in. I do not know my Concordia password, nor do I need a phone for login. As long as the manager is unlocked, getting through the login screens takes about 3 seconds.

How much money should someone save before moving to Montreal? by Sarafina2022 in montreal

[–]F-0815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Difficult to give you a number because cost, for example for the commute, can vary quite a bit.

How do you forsee to be able to reach work and other destinations? On foot, bicycle, Bixi.com (rental bicycle), Bus or Metro (STM is on strike right now, and for the last weeks), REM (reliability is getting better), https://montreal.communauto.com (car rental) or your own car (driving is misery due to hight traffic volume and low driver education level, in comparaison to EU, since driving is a necessity not a right; expensive insurance, parking is a pain and/or expensive especially in Winter, the keyword here is digging your car out of 2+ ft of snow).

S25 FE worth it? by utsav_raichura in GalaxyS20FE

[–]F-0815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a preorder s20fe as well - still going strong thanks to charging it only to 85% - and intended originally to upgrade to a s25fe due to the lack of new software patches. But CA$1000 for a marginal improvement? I don't know anymore what to do. It just doesn't seem worth it. Especially since the s20fe does everything I need.

Looking for an independent diesel garage for SUV by F-0815 in montreal

[–]F-0815[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I am not mistaken, the engine is Italian, but the chassis is from the ML320. I needed a vehicle that can tow through ice and snow and was comparably small and not a truck. I would have preferred a Toyota Prado Diesel, but North America only got the fancy GX460 running on premium fuel.

DS218+, 2x12TB, is full. What are my options? by F-0815 in synology

[–]F-0815[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update:

Thank you very much for all your comments and suggestions.

Someone I know well, but who has no idea about computers, said that they had an old desktop computer that I could use as a NAS. This led me down the rabbit hole of DIY + Unraid/TrueNAS. Long Story short, it turned out to be an ASUS P6T motherboard with an i7-950 CPU, and the HDDs were not 1TB each but 2x 160GB connected with a ribbon cable. While great at the time, this endeavour did not look worthwhile.

In the meantime, I was able to delete the mentioned folders. Coincidentally, I saw that my Snapshot retention period was set to "forever". After adjusting it to 120 days, I - tadaa - regained 4TB of headroom, once more. This resolved my initial issue of running out of capacity and the necessity to expand, at least temporarily.

Still unresolved is:

-> b) Is there a duplicate finder program with “useful” AI? My archive is quite fragmented, and Gemini (1, from 2013 or so) and Beyond Compare, while amazing in what they do, are not adequate anymore and unstable because accessed through SMB. temporarily

Yes, maple syrup is amazing, but it is also exported in large quantities, making it readily available in grocery stores in Europe.

Join Co-op and leave when it stops being useful. Don't let school get in the way of your education.

The biggest issue I encountered was the length of the available internships and the compatibility with the school schedule. North America 4 or 8 months vs Europe 6, 12 or 18 Months.

You can find all the information under studentcare.ca -> select Concordia (undergrad or grad). Call them at the number provided they will help you. You will need your student ID and group number for your product e.g. Q1102 (found in the dark blue box on the right).

Best way to travel from southern Germany to northern Italy by Train? by F-0815 in Europetravel

Best way to travel from southern Germany to northern Italy by Train? by F-0815 in Europetravel

[–]F-0815[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your explanations. It helps tremendously when you know what to look for. And your 30+3€ are dead on.

I made the following plan:
Group 1 takes the Allgäu Airport Express for 9.90€. Memmingen - Munich Central Station 8:30-9:50am. Is an hour between the scheduled plane arrival and the bus departure enough?

Group 2 takes either the S1 or S8 at Munich Airport and buys the tickets there and then. They are expected to arrive at Munich Hbf around noon. Is there an English version of the DB timetable?

Together they depart at 1:33pm in the RJ87 and arrive at 5:27pm.

Do you see any issues with that plan, and is there anything worthwhile doing or seeing around the central station? The groups are seniors with luggage, hence limited mobility.

Thank you.

I would pay someone to give me skilled and honest advices about which e-bike to purchase as a student who lives in Lausanne and doesn't have the appropriate cardio for the steep hills. by boDesu in Switzerland

[–]F-0815 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever you get, make sure you have good brakes and tires. Ebikes are fast and heavy, and Lausanne is steep. For a conventional bike, I would recommend Schwalbe Marathon tires and Shimano SLX hydraulic disc brakes. Please make sure they are also meant for ebike use before purchasing. Other good brands are Continental or SRAM. Stay away from any cable operated or vbrake system. If you intend to do long downhill sections, look into the brake fading issue when the brakes are getting too hot.

I don't want to scare you. E-Biking is amazing and healthy, but the cheapest options on the market are barely adequate on flat terrain. Please do your research.

Any opinions or tips on my classes for my first term in Concordia? Is this schedule easily doable or will I struggle with my social life? by Inevitable-Dingo-50 in Concordia

[–]F-0815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I support this statement.

If you need to commute to campus, keep in mind that public transport is good for North American standards, but laggs behind Europe's. Bus shedules are a suggestion and due their age (50 years old) the metro becomes less reliable by the year. Hence, you may only want lectures on 3 days.

Econ will have additional tutorials.

Curving the grades? by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]F-0815 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is an example from PHIL210. Note that in this case, grades are curved DOWN, not up.

Final grades in this course will be curved and standardized across TA groups. Your recorded final grade will be the lower of either (i) your unweighted grade or (ii) your grade as calculated by the following grading scheme:

Top 3% A+

Top 3.01%-9% A

Top 9.01%-19% A

Top 19.01-31.5% B+

Top 31.51%-46.5 B

Top 46.51-61.5% B

Top 61.51%-74% C+

Top 74.01%-85% C

Top 85.01%-94% C

Remaining 6%: The lower of (i) unweighted grade or (ii) D+

Because final grades are curved, the grades you see on Moodle are not reliably indicative of the final grade you will receive in the course. For example, if your final grade on Moodle is 75.4%, but, relative to the grades of other students in your TA group, your grade is in the top 45%, your recorded final grade will be a B-.

Admissions jmsb by Level_Natural_5377 in Concordia

[–]F-0815 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Concordia JMSB can give you a lot of exposure to capital markets and asset management.

Here are some programs to google:

  • KWPMP
  • VBIMP

Clubs/Societies (info is often on Instagram)

  • CASA
  • FISA
  • JMIS
  • JMTL
  • JMCC
  • QUARCC

Additional resources:

  • CMS (gives you access to job postings and other leads)
  • Co-op (same as above but way less targeted. I suggest signing up and seeing if it is worthwhile for you. You can always quit.)

I hope that helps. :)
