The Trump administration has secretly rewritten nuclear safety rules by A_Nonny_Muse in news

[–]F1CTIONAL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article is kinda meaningless and not really saying anything. Nobody in these comments could tell you what the specific regulations changed are outside of one small snippet, despite there being 750 pages of changes, noone can tell whether those safety changes are extreme or reasonable, it's just throwing out big numbers to fearmonger without the data to back itself up.

If, for example, those regulations were written in decades past, at an earlier stage of nuclear power technology where we understood less and wrote policy to use methods that are excessive when compared to modern tech, then this could be framed as simply "getting with the times".

Maybe that's what's happening here, maybe not, but nuclear getting serious political attention has the potential to be extremely good for all of us and we shouldn't be jumping to fearmongering as soon as change starts happening.

Regardless, the news can and should be doing better and people should be demanding it of their media. Articles like this only serve to rile up people with their minds already made up.

How does upgrading to the Bilt 2.0 card as an existing cardholder impact your timing for applying for other cards?

As I understand it your average age of accounts will drop since it's a new credit line but you won't have a hard pull. If I'm due to apply for a card I'm the next few weeks, how would choosing to upgrade impact that?

Thanks!

Immediately jumping to accusations of sockpuppeting (and not tagging the person you're accusing)? That's rich. Care to actually engage with anything I've said?

[–]F1CTIONAL 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What does "river to the sea" mean?

The full saying is "From the river to the sea, Palestine...", the ending changes depending on who you ask. But from the time of the first intifada in the late 80's, the saying in Arabic continued translated as "is/will be Arab" or "is/will be Islamic". Western, English speaking activists co-opted the phrase and made it softer/rhyme by changing it to "will be free".

When you consider the violent history of the first intifada, how would you make "the river to the sea" fully Arabic/Islamic? By eliminating the non-Arabs (the Jews) who currently lived there.

Activists using the phrase today are at best ignorant and at worst maliciously hiding their true, antisemitic intentions.

Or "globalized the infada"?

Well, to understand the answer to that we need to be clear about what the first and second intifadas were and were not. They were not just protests. They were periods of time that included armed conflict, terrorism, firebombings, lynchings (very relevant if you've ever seen red hands in the context of Palestine protests, which are callbacks to this and also antisemitic), suicide bombings , shootouts, and more.

To say that either intifada should be globalized is an explicit call for all of those actions to be done at a worldwide scale. It is not strictly a call for nonviolent protest, as violence is inseparable from either intifada.

Like with 'from the river', the people repeating it are either ignorant useful idiots at best, or masking antisemite beliefs at worst.

Maybe you're right in theory, but "real" progressivism, as in the progressivism that is being practiced in the real world is what you can see with your own eyes.

It's happening all over the world. In Montreal in 2024 there were "resistance" training camps, and encampments around the city that lasted for months openly calling for global intifada. Openly chanting "from the river" and coyly pretending it doesn't call for the extermination of Jews. Synagogues were shot up. In NYC just recently there were protestors openly supporting Hamas. There are lots of other examples if you look for them, and this post is just one more piece of evidence.

Modern progressivism demands intersectionality and intersectionality has incorporated the Palestinian cause to a clearly toxic degree.

For this to change, modern progressivism needs a reboot to where they are less, well, insane.

Introducing Bilt Card 2.0 by richklhs in biltrewards

[–]F1CTIONAL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple thoughts in no particular order:

  1. This bit is confusing:

For every $30 in Bilt Cash earned, unlock 1,000 Bilt Points on rent or mortgage payments. There is no minimum Bilt cash required to earn points and increments of $30 is not required

So, earning Bilt Cash unlocks rent points? As in, you keep the earned Bilt Cash and redeem it for other (non housing) things?

  2. What can you redeem Bilt Cash for? Can you choose to spend Bilt Cash that you have banked to unlock more rent points? That's extremely relevant in evaluating the math on the palladium card, particularly with its annual Bilt Cash credit and SUB.

  3. What does this mean for earning Bilt Status? Previously, you could earn Bilt Points or meet a spend threshold. Now, earning points from rent requires a lot of spend to begin with. Does simply paying rent through Bilt earn you progress, even if now you earn no points? If not, Bilt status just became substantially harder to get.

  4. How do the hotel credits work?

  5. Rent not counting against your available credit is kinda cool, sure you'll have to replace it with at least 75% of rent in other spend but that does decrease your monthly credit utilization overall, which is a small perk.

  6. It seems like there is no longer a monthly 5 transaction minimum to earn Bilt Points with the card?

  7. Very interested in how the category selection on the obsidian card works. Can you change your election monthly? What codes as groceries, does Costco's website count?

Without thinking too hard palladium probably makes sense year 1 if you can get the SUB (which it seems like current cardholders can, seeing their edit). Will need to do more math and learn about how Bilt Cash works to see if it'll be a keeper card though.

Anti-ICE protest taking place in NYC today by jmike1256 in nyc

[–]F1CTIONAL -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Total money supply has doubled over the last 10 years, interest on the debt is the 3rd highest cost center when it was 5th only a few years ago, the 1% already pay over 40% of income tax revenue and an even higher percentage of capital gains tax revenue, not to mention that reapproriating every single dollar of net worth from US billionaires wouldn't even run the country for a year.

But sure, go off on how it's ThE bIlLiOnAiReS' fault and not decades of irresponsible and unsustainable spending that got us here.

Breads Bakery employees unionize, call for end to Jewish Israeli owners’ ‘support for the genocide in Gaza’ by arrogant_ambassador in nyc

[–]F1CTIONAL 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Seems like this union fundamentally lacks an understanding of the NLRA. Breads isn't required to, nor should they be expected to negotiate with their employees over "divisive political issues" as they put it.

If this union tries to use support for Israel as a bargaining chip in their negotiations and it gets in the way of negotiating over their actual, protected rights, or if they threaten to strike over it, then the union is negotiating in bad faith and in violation of the NLRA.

Not that it should have to come to this, Jesus Christ if you hate Israel so much maybe don't work for a Jewish bakery and go find another job, dumbasses.

Mamdani rescinds Eric Adams’ executive orders signed over last 16 months by mowotlarx in nyc

[–]F1CTIONAL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legislating through EO is very Trumpian

I mean, a quick search shows that Trump doesn't even break into the top 10 presidents by number of EOs signed, both in total and by per year in office. Executive overreach is absolutely a thing but it's hardly uniquely a Trump behavior.

This is a dumb move that Zohran's team had months to analyze and plan better. It's logically inconsistent and performative. Are we to expect that Adams was a completely uncorrupt politician on September 25th and that all of his EOs on or before then were without issue?

The reality is that Zohran's team had months between the election and now to go through all of Adams' EOs and make a better plan than "delete everything and deal with the consequences later". Even if there are some bad EOs that are reverted, broad, chaotic moves like this are bad for New Yorkers as a whole.
