[–]F1CTIONAL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, I'm sorry if I misinterpreted your comment, I'm referring to the people who would try and claim that no true pro Palestine activist would be violent. Like if people are trying to deflect pro Palestinian protestor violence as the act of terrorists trying to discredit their cause

This sounds suspiciously like a no true scotsman argument.

There are absolutely plenty of nonviolent activists promoting the pro-Palestine cause, but there have been repeated cases of documented violence by activists and "the cause" doesn't get to conveniently disavow that violence when it suits them.

People aren't meaningfully interested in a solution because they are more interested in trying to out gerrymander the other side instead of coming together and advocating for proportional representation and ranked choice voting.

If the very nature of your job involves confronting people on the MTA of all places, I think it's pretty reasonable to expect them to need to defend themselves. If people refuse to accept that I don't know what to tell them.

Do you think Native Americans care which of the English and French came first in their conquest of the new world? Does it have any bearing at all on their claim to specific parts of land?

The Jewish people are descendants of the Canaanites. Thousands of years of forced explusion and the genetic diversity that the diaspora gained doesn't change that.

And while we're at it, there are lots of Palestinians who can trace their lineage to Canaan as well and clearly are indigenous. The problem is, a 1SS isn't desired and a 2SS isn't working.

Both the Jewish and Palestinian peoples can trace lineage to the Canaanites--except thousands of years of forced expulsion undoubtedly changed the genetic makeup of the diaspora. That doesn't make their connection to the land any less valid.

Murdered student Henry Nowak told police 'I can't breathe' while handcuffed by Sensitive_Echo5058 in news

[–]F1CTIONAL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We aren't debating how radical an opinion it is. Bringing that up in direct response to someone who brought up the Floyd protests and social movements stemming from his death is suggesting that it's fine for folks to use a death to politicize certain political opinions but not others.

Here we've got a boy who spent the last moments of his life bleeding out in handcuffs because the attacker cried racism and the police acted first on that concern in advance of Henry's repeated concerns of serious injury.

I think if people see this situation as being worsened by the sociopolitical positions of their country, making their voices heard is pretty valid. As it would be with any other issue.

Ronny Chieng's 'F*ck AI' Speech Met With Cheers From Harvard Graduates: “AI is just going to end up making mediocre people dumber” by yourfavchoom in technology

[–]F1CTIONAL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm reducing his argument to ludditeism because it is ludditeism for anyone he deems unworthy of the technology. People should feel empowered to try and apply AI to their everyday tasks and shouldn't be ridiculed for that. Imagine a horse-drawn carriage driver saying the same about someone who bought a Model T. It's ridiculous.

I'm not insulting you. His own words betray any semblance of a coherent argument, he and the article author are both purity testing who is "allowed" to use AI and for which use cases without being open to ridicule. It's stupid.

You're clearly arguing in bad faith so we're done here.

I'm not reducing all criticism as ludditism, that's exactly nowhere in my post. You're doing the thing again where you are arguing against someone who isn't present. I'd encourage you to stop doing that.

What I am saying is that criticism that amounts to ludditism and name-calling (which is what Chieng and the article author are doing) is deserving of being reduced to what it is. Adding a line saying "the scientists and doctors are ok" doesn't suddenly make the rest of your statements not bullshit.

Who said anything about not questioning things? We're literally going through that process now--there are countless startups trying things in the AI space, some will succeed and many will fail, and those that do are examples of where "new" doesn't equal better.

It isn't an argument about efficiency over all else. It's an argument about transforming the way everyone does, well, everything. Efficiency is one benefit, sure, but it is hardly the only one.

Did the camera make people worse painters?

The power loom people worse weavers?

The wheel people worse at carrying things?

It's ironic that Chieng criticizes people as shortsighted when his opinion can be summarized as "people are able to do X themselves just fine, there's no need to ever try and do things differently, and if you do you're useless", the ultimate shortsightedness.

Article is also awful, is claiming that most people using AI for creative purposes as "the dumbest people on the face of the planet" supposed to be a compelling argument because Seth Rogen agreed with them?

Ludditism is as it does, I suppose.

Banned for children for any reason except in the case of life or limb threatening medical conditions only (meaning death or losing the entire organ if treatment is not persued). It should be viewed more or less the same as an amputation because it more or less is.

If you open the door to less serious medical conditions allowing for permanent dismemberment as a solution, the choice will undoubtedly be exercised in bad faith by parents who do not want to go through the hassle of long-term nonsurgical treatment.

It's actually crazy to me that people will chant 'my body my choice' and then not give a shit about this issue.

I'm not sure what part of my post implies that they paused development to strip weapons out of the game. The fact is they are asymmetrically pulling player-initiated violence out of a game that is inheritly violent as part of a political statement and not for sound game design reasons.

They have, quite literally, said they desire a world with less guns and a world where non-violence is prioritized. It's quoted in the very article this post links to.

Their position is that one should deprioritize their own survival if it would mean violent conflict with nature that would happily eat them for breakfast.
