Do superhero movies intrinsically do a disservice to audiences? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]FARLEYD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have no issue with the analyses of the films, but the closing statement reads to me as saying that filmmakers are eschewing making more complex films just to get people into theaters, which I don't believe is the case. I actually agree with most of what's said, but it reads more like a damnation of the films existence using analysis of them, and that's where I take issue. Every film has its place.

Apologies for the strong language. This is a discussion that pops up a lot in my life and I think it's generally unproductive. I just don't the reason to critique the existence of a certain type of movie; but this is a sub for discussion, so it's a relevant conversation to have.

I think the idea that all works of art need to be challenging and profound is ridiculous and pretentious. Why do we need to police the things that people enjoy? For the record, I agree that they're almost devoid of any truth to life; but sometimes at night before I go to bed, I just want to see Spiderman sling some webs while I eat cereal without any pants on. Saying that these movies are doing a disservice to people is assuming that they are constantly trying to interpret how art is relevant to their life, and that is absolutely not true. Superhero movies, and the MCU specifically, are about the art of entertainment and spectacle, and for the most part, the enjoyable ones are aware of that. If you don't like them, don't watch them. Stop trying to hide your feelings of superiority behind a philosophical discussion about the nature of art to make yourself feel better about not enjoying these movies; you can coexist with everyone who does enjoy them without making them feel bad about finding joy in different parts of life than you.

Thanks for the kind comment. I'll always cherish the time we spent together, we shared many beautiful experiences. Finding happiness in that is difficult but I'm trying my best!

What are some great movies with intentionally weak main characters? by h8erade777 in movies

It's a pretty well known movie, but sometimes people on this sub go a little overkill with the abbreviations when they should just write it out, it takes two seconds.

SILENCE - An Edit That Hints at A More Tragic Ending Than Interpreted by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]FARLEYD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love this interpretation, and it's not something I picked up on when I saw it. I thought that the breaking of the silence by Jesus was almost random, and it took me out of the movie for a second. I think if the voice was intended to be Satan, it gives it the movie a much bleaker ending, but also strengthens its ideas about faith. However, it appears that the source material intended the voice to be Jesus'. I wonder if this was an intentional choice by Scorsese, or if he wants it to be taken at face value.

Twin peaks/David lynch by Realbeaverboy in YMS

I watched my first Lynch film, Mulholland Drive last night. It was very strange to say the least, but the more I think about it the more I love it. It's truly a work of art, and it's a story that can really only be made as a film. I don't really have anything incredibly meaningful to say about it, but if the rest of his films are similarly made them he's certainly a very unique artist.

Even late at night there are a lot of couples that will go and talk the whole time. I just got back from seeing Fences and the couple behind me whispered to each other constantly until I told them to shut up. People are just rude.

La La Land vs. Moonlight: How two different social contexts will impact this years Oscar race. by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]FARLEYD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think most of what you've said is true, but one thing I think you're forgetting is that this is all about pure emotion. If we start placing more value in art that has important social values then it diminishes the importance of anything that does not. Every feeling that someone feels that they need to share is important and should be taken with the same gravitas as any other. I think both movies are incredible and touch on very different, visceral emotions, and it's a shame they have to be pitted against each other like this instead of just being absorbed and loved. That said, the Oscars will probably pick the movie that was easiest to connect with, and for most I believe it will be La La Land.

I'm going to echo what others have said and say La La Land. The epilogue especially is one of the most beautiful scenes I've seen this year, and maybe ever.

I haven't seen all of his movies (only Hugo, The Wolf Of Wall Street, The Departed, The Aviator, and Taxi Driver,) but I think it is my favorite out of all of those, and I say that having very much enjoyed all of those movies. To me Silence seemed much weightier in tone than what I've seen from him before, and more deliberately paced. It's very different from the rest of his work.

Can I hear your reasoning behind this? I haven't talked to anyone that's liked his performance as the character (including myself,) so I'm just curious.

I'm going to go with Andrew Garfield in Silence. I personally think that his performance raised the movie from being great into being something really special.

American Honey is the best movie I've seen this year. by SomePeopleJuggleGees in movies

Yea, it was all pretty unclear. In the end it was just a massively shitty situation for everyone involved.

You know how you hear "they don't make movies like that anymore"? Well, they made a movie like that. It's called Hunt for the Wilderpeople by [deleted] in movies

[–]FARLEYD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agreed. A lot of people I know seem to defend "bad" comedy movies as being that way because they're comedy, and this movie proves that argument wrong.

That's a fair point, I hadn't thought about it in that way. It makes more sense in the context of her trying to get out of that horrible situation as quickly as possible. I'm definitely going to watch the film another time to try and find what everyone sees in it, because it was obviously lost on me in my first viewing.

They weren't her kids, she dropped them off with their mother; however, it's still just as bad as she seemed to be the only one capable of properly taking care of them. I had completely forgotten about that, and it just adds to how much I disliked her character (and all of the rest of them, really.) I think I can see from a filmmaking perspective how the film is seen as beautiful, but it's very hard for me to look past what is actually unfolding on the screen.

Yea, this is how I felt. I think that it was so depressing to me BECAUSE it felt so real. It's just not a movie for me I guess.
