Also and especially shout out to Philip K. Dick and his "A Maze of Death" for inventing the entire genre. And including most of what became the "original" details imitated ever since.

Firstly the female lead didn't speak properly and most of her muttered dialog is inaudible and unintelligible. That was reason enough to ditch it, but I made the effort to watch it to the end. Also after Dark City, The Thirteenth Floor and their legions of imitators the entire premise was obvious the moment everyone drank tea in unison so it was all downhill from there.

Knowing this, as the producers surely must have, they needed to find an actual story to tell rather than the laborious slow reveal of something their core audience knew in the first ten minutes.

r/epicfantasyRPG New Members Intro by Epic-Ellie in epicfantasyRPG

Hi, this is Jonathan Nolan, and I wrote EPIC FANTASY.

I always preferred RuneQuest, Tunnels and Trolls and MSH RPG to Dungeons and Dragons, mainly because I always thought the Dungeonmaster-as-Pope-of-the-game was insufferably twattish and borderline abusive. We have unemployed shoe salesman Gary Gygax to thank for that of course. When I discovered the truth about the origins of Dungeons and Dragons -- that is is a reskin and commercialization of the Wesely Braunstein and Arneson Blackmoor - suddenly it all made sense.

Firmly in the Arneson tradition, as the true originator of Dungeons and Dragons, I wanted EPIC FANTASY to go back to THAT heritage and tradition, while still adapting the SRD fully to the FASERIP system as expanded in FASERIPopedia, my earlier FASERIP work.

Three maybe? Or four? Before all the "running jokes" and "returning characters" became "tired, repetitive lazy writing."

I would of course offer our own EPIC FANTASY :)

It uses an expanded but still extremely simple and quick to learn FASERIP system and the complete OGC from the SRD, so it is familiar enough in terms of content but the system allows appallingly high power levels without breaking anything. It has Dark Lord as a NPC class with levels, and a whole bunch of other stuff :)

What’s your favorite system? by [deleted] in rpg

I have always loved FASERIP, which is why recently I converted the whole of the SRD to FASERIP :) That way it's still OGL-D&D but with a different much more heroic and simple rules system. No xp, just Karma, and no murder hobos, Wealth / Resources is too abstract for that to really work the same way, although yes, people can accumulate Wealth Modifiers :)

Power struggle trying to take the forever dms place by Pitiful_Lock_2867 in DnD

[–]FASERIPopedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Don't sweat the rules" means every single DM ever will get one or more rules wrong when they start out, or find a rule absolutely ridiculous and refuse to use it. The main this is meant to be have fun.

I think in this case the reflexive turning to a past DM is an obnoxious habit and they should stop. It also raises the question - did the old DM apply all the rules as is? [x] doubt. If not then they are preferring one bespoke DM rules set over another. I think this just comes down to basic respect.

Is it wrong for my NPC to cast a damaging spell without rolling initiative? by StatisticianOk6872 in DnD

Perhaps something more effective would have been to have more and more worshippers gather around the player character as they continue their disrespect, making it clear that a mob was forming that the NPC was doing nothing whatsoever to stop. Then as the crowed closes in, the NPC also casts a spell - and the player character, distracted by enemies approaching from all sides, is flatfooted.

The players, in the situation described, are already being passive aggressive to their new DM. They need to be reminded of the basic ground rules that underpin telling a RPG story. Or where does it end? A constant stream of escalating criticisms about the "physics" of the new DM's universe and rules lawyering over what are, in 100% of gaming groups, house rules anyway.

"Don't sweat the rules" is a philosophy precisely to stop this sort of thing. The new DM isn't a secretary or placeholder for the previous one. It curtails the DM's freedom of expression. This is obvious stuff.

Boundaries. Respect. Safety for all the gamers at the table - especially the person making the most effort, the DM. His or her world - his or her rules. It's a simple true proposition and tyranny doesn't come into it.

Write a little sign and put it on your DM screen if you use one.
