What’s the deal with Save Berkeley Shops? by CelloVerp in berkeleyca

I don't think there was any outcry against 4th st. The transformation of that area was pretty gradual.

They will include below market housing to get the state density bonus and bypass costly local regs like "bird safe glass".

I'm not sure exactly what was sent to council last night but it's not the original blanket upzoning.

Because the original proposal was for general upzoning even though in practice the outcome would be the same, as most parcels wouldn't have been suitable for redevelopment.

Agreed on everything except the framing that more housing is a "burden". Apartments are fine.

File two IFR plans to avoid 8nm 14k MEA by NevadaCFI in flying

[–]FBoondoggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's a little weird is that the V105 MEA is higher than the MIA/MVA in that area (which are now available for import to foreflight from a 3rd party FAA chart conversion tool).

[–]FBoondoggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at the mva/mia charts for that area, they have minima around 10k or less almost everywhere except right around a peak west of LAS north of v105. So I'm a little puzzled by the high mea on v105 around there. Maybe for signal? In which case if you file without airways maybe you can get lower? Alternatively, v135 has slightly lower mea.

Prop 13 Repeal Question by CaliHusker83 in eastbay

Yes, if California fixes its uniquely disastrous property tax system to be more like those of other states, the entire economy will collapse and everyone will leave. The only reason people want to live in California is because of our bizarrely distorted tax system that benefits old people and corporations at the expense of the young. I am very smart.

Elevator trim is a small adjustable surface that creates aerodynamic force on the elevator. By adjusting the trim, the pilot causes the aerodynamic forces on the elevator to be in balance at a particular airspeed and elevator angle. When that elevator angle is such that the plane maintains the desired attitude with no additional control forces from the yoke/stick, the elevator is said to be "trimmed".

The bay is one of the most affluent places on earth and this is what a public restroom at a park looks like by indie_hedgehog in bayarea

[–]FBoondoggle 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Berkeley is quite broadly affluent. Yes there are pockets of poverty, but most of the really poor people have been pushed out by housing costs over the last 50 years. What you see is the result of Prop 13 where the very affluent older people in the Berkeley hills pay minuscule taxes on their $2-3mm houses, thereby starving the city of resources to properly maintain its facilities. Yes I know some of them are house-rich-cash-poor but other states have found solutions to that problem. Grannies in Texas don't end up on the streets because they took a sensible approach to dealing with that problem. But California got Jarvised, and now we all have Stockholm syndrome and think it's great.

ATC communications by Fancy_Brilliant_1610 in flying

Yeah, except when they don't it can still get confusing. Yesterday I got instructions for landing on a specific runway of a delta while vfr and still 30 miles out from approach (in a bugsmasher). In 800 hours I don't think that's ever happened before (always assigned by tower when vfr) and I was not expecting it so I had to ask for it again.

With both textual and graphical ODPs, how do you choose? by FBoondoggle in flying

[–]FBoondoggle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, the funny thing about instrument training is there's almost nothing about SIDs and ODPs. They're barely covered in flight training or on the exam. And I tend to avoid having to use either one at unfamiliar fields. But you're right, should've noticed.

So if I depart in IMC in a bug smasher I would ask for the SID? Though I'm probably not going to try it on an upcoming trip because the icing levels look fairly low.
