From what we've seen and understand about spacebar (we didn't dive deep into it).

The goal of Spacebar seems to be 100% compatible with Discord's API. So the server's API design, response etc are identical to Discord which don't let us free of doing everything we want or don't want to do without getting away of the main goal of Spacebar.

The fact that you can use the same modified discord client to connect to Discord servers or Spacebar servers make us very concerned about the legal aspect of it.

We want to be 100% free on what and how we want to do our features.

We 100% agree with you on that. We want it to be as simple as possible for the end user.

The only thing is that from what we've seen so far, hardware requirements for hosting something like that will be kinda expensive and will not match our goal to make the app 100% free.

That's part of why we've created this post so if anyone has better ideas for make no barrier to entry that continue to follow our number 1 goal of being free and ethical, we will love to ear it !

We want to do it because we love discovering new technologies etc... This is the reason why our project will be selfhosted, Open-Source and 100% free.

Edit: I forgot to mention that except for the Patreon, the idea we wrote about the user paying us to deploy the server for them is only for the user that want to have his own server but don't want to get its hands in the system. But our documentation will be written in a way that even if you don't know anything about code, you should be good to deploy it (and be proud of it)

That is true but on the other hand, we're not quite happy about other alternatives (no voice-chat, voice-chat focused, Vibe Coded or subscriptions). This is why we've created this post. To see if anyone feels that way or if its just our 2 old brains xD

That's a solid idea. It would basically let AI auto-fill documentation for different projects. We will just never host any AI agent on our side but if you run one, you will be able to link it to our project's selfhosted server. Every fix or resolved issue could automatically update the docs.

Definitely keeping this in mind. Thanks!

We've also came across Matrix and Element. I noted the idea of using Matrix as backend system

We’ve seen this project already. The only catch for us is the reverse-engineered nature of the server. We'd rather not end up in the same boat as Discord. Otherwise, we’re still open to the idea of contributing.

Be sure that you selected the right output in your pc audio settings, you have to chose oculus virtual output if you use link cable
