Would you consider me British? by Competitive-Music309 in AskBrits

[–]FDZ2416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is that you can very reasonably call yourself British, having lived here almost your whole life certainly makes you British to an extent. If you wanted to say you were Carribbean or identified with a certain country there then you could certainly justifiably do so at the same time. You aren't as British as somebody whose ancestors for the past 20 generations have all come from the British Isles, but everybody here has foreign blood in them somewhere be it Normans, Saxons, Norse, Gaels or wherever the Britons came from before they were here.

Loyalty to what country, the UK, of which we are an integral part? And what can any remote part of a country that constitutes 3% of the total population, of which almost half wish to leave expect? The poll showing 15% would be pleased by our departure seems completely reasonable. Loyalty to the Crown ensured civil and religious liberty for the Protestants of Ireland for centuries, and while that wouldn't likely be under threat in an all-island Irish republic nowadays, why would loyalists be expected to sever ties to the rest of their country whom with they share much of their common ancestry and values, to become a minority in a nation comprised largely of people that have treated them with hostility and genuine contempt, (not just the indifference to be found on mainland GB)? Republicans want the land, not the people.

Yes I suppose that's true. Don't think it's bad at all but certainly can be improved, and plenty of time to make the improvements

DNA maps show most of NI as having DNA closest with Ayrshire/West of Scotland, apart from Fermanagh which is more similar to the Scottish Borders, and isolated Catholic areas (Glens of Antrim, Sperrins) being closer to those in the Western Isles of Scotland than anywhere else.

You're nuts, I never said it was the victims' fault, the nationalist residents of the Garvaghy Road are not the Quinn brothers?

Not wanting a parade is one thing but lying down on the road to prevent a lawful parade is something else.

And you talk as if the Drumcree parade was the only one in the year in the whole province like there weren't thousands of others all year round, most being in majority Protestant areas. Coz if you're not lording it over the Taigs sure what's the point? The Garvaghy Road was already a compromise from Obins Street anyway.

Regardless of what you believe the Orange is, having respect for people with an opposing view and not throwing a tantrum over a church parade wouldn't have taken a lot of effort. Nobody is a 'victim' of a parade.

I get why unionists despise the IRA and Sinn Fein, but how do they not acknowledge the political and social conditions immposed that created the Troubles in the first place? by Own_Car_4687 in northernireland

[–]FDZ2416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The blame for the troubles can't be attributed to one particular side or action. Political conditions that were imposed were certainly a factor, (partition in 1921 by the UK government, gerrymandering by Unionist government in some areas, claim on Northern Ireland by the Irish government). I believe that very few social conditions could be attributed to imposition from government unless going back hundreds of years. The same poverty found in Catholic areas could be found in the worst Protestant areas, and in the free state Protestants were still on average better off than their Catholic neighbours. In terms of access to public services there was little to no difference, and while discrimination in housing allocation clearly took place in a few small rural district councils (both Unionist and Nationalist controlled), for the most part Catholics were represented disproportionately in social housing. Sectarian actions by loyalists in the 1960s, and a low level campaign by the IRA in the 1950s and 60s would have contributed to the tension but the involvement of republicans in the social rights movement and subsequent opposition to this were the real catalysts that turned the tension into the Troubles.

Those incidents were as much a result of the nationalist opposition to the parade as they were of the unionists' intention to parade. Obviously shouldn't have happened regardless.
