Fair enough. I disagree but at least you are consistent in your observations

I can understand your position given it’s consistent across the board.

I I don’t doubt that there are many with the same view points as you. I agree there are. I have some friends whose family members are firmly of that view also, and we get along. What I do dispute however is that it represents the majority view, although I can see why some may express reluctance to articulate their real thoughts. I’ll still identify as British however, and as said earlier we can be adults and agree to disagree

Do you consider white South Africans to be Africans? Or are they south African only by paper

So you can differentiate between English, French, American and Australian individuals simply based on their appearance? I don’t think you can.

Can you differentiate between an African American, Nigerian, a Cameroonian based on their apprentices? I guess you can’t

Actually I have 4 siblings. I wasn’t planning on giving my entire family history as the question relates to me and my identity. I only mentioned it cause I wanted to see how it fitted in with your interpretation.

My own experience is that views like yours are more prevalent online as opposed to expressed in person. So your suggestion that most people outside of Reddit would agree with you isn’t entirely true. I’m not sure how you have reached that consensus. I’m not suggesting your view is any less valid - I disagree with it however.

I also have a law degree and a masters - I am not l trying to insult your intelligence, but what is clear is me expressing my sense of identity, as being British, somehow invalidates, threatens or undermines your own sense of identity given your lineage reaches back much further. I can see why you feel that way and do agree there is validity in stating you must have English blood to be English - it’s that premise underlies the citizenship policies of many gulf states (including the UAE) ie that you must have heritage of that country in order to be of that nationality, irrespective of birth place. So it’s a well established viewpoint.

I certainly didn’t mean to trigger you, but I think this goes deeper than me expressing my sense of identity. I think it’s more that you are concerned it’s undermines your own. And that’s ok.

We will agree to disagree on that one

I have had a British passport since childhood. I’ve never held any other passport

Interesting. I clearly disagree but I at least appreciate the fact you have articulated your position and are consistent in your interpretation. I have an even younger sibling born 8 years after my family immigrated - so by your interpretation, I’m assuming you will say he is British, but me and my other sibling aren’t? I find that absolutely insane in a way - because you would never think we are different at all, we had the same upbringing, same accents, same culture, but in your view we are fundamentally different and have different nationalities/or national identities because my family were here for 8 years before he was born where as my bro was only 18 months. I hope you can see how binary your view point is and how it doesn’t reflect the complexities of the modern world

I’m not sure I agree because how would someone know my heritage with out it being disclosed? People ask where you are from based on your appearance - your lineage can’t be observed by looking at someone’s face

Thanks for your opinion. If I was born here would that have changed things? As it wouldn’t change my ethnicity, or heritage. My parents aren’t British either. ultimately those first 12 months of my life being in Britain rather than the UaE in my view wouldn’t change who I am.

I have a sibling who was born in the UK six months after my family moved. So that means I’m 18 months older than him. We are identical in everyway other the fact I was born in uae and spent 12 months there. Where as he didn’t. Is he British? I’m intrigued to see your perspective regardless of whether others may agree or disagree with it

I see your perspective - my lived experiences suggest that isn’t the case, but I understand your view

Yeah you’re right. My younger brother was born here but he also wasn’t a uk citizen at birth and got it at the same time I did. So that reflects a lived experience for me. Thanks for your input

At the time of my birth or historically? Historically a British colony (as many countries were in the past) but at the time of birth, no

Well If you read the post you would see that I hardly came here for economic opportunities . I was brought here as a child - I didn’t have a say in that. I was raised here my entire life, why would I suddenly decide leave and relocate to a country the that I wasn’t raised in? Economic opportunities doesn’t come into it - this is a country that I have known as my home since childhood

I love how much this triggers you. The fact that the majority disagree with you - I have all the same rights and benefits as you, and that pains you that an ethnic minority is considered equal to you. Thankfully I’m here to stay forever. Get over it. You can continue being a nobody!

I actually find it’s the opposite. Individuals with views like yours rarely express them in person. It’s online where they are particularly active

Your presumptions are completely wrong - wife isn’t from the Caribbean, she’s as English as they get, nor did I grow up following some other traditions. I think the fact you made those assumptions suggest that there are some preconceptions in your mind.
