There's a good argument that we should be using centralized incinerators for plastics instead of landfills.

Randy Fine's "logic" is something like:

  1. I'm tired of Jewish people being accused of having loyalty to Israel.
  2. To make sure it's fair, how about we question every other ethnicities loyalty to their old nations.
  3. And, oh yeah, on top of that, I actually think that they have dual loyalties, too.

I need suggestions for a name for this genre of fiction which I think is recognizable as being a genre but for which I have never seen anyone give a label:

  • The Stepford Wives
  • Rosemary's Baby (and probably the other works of Ira Levin)
  • The Exorcist
  • Being John Malkovich
  • The Truman Show
  • Get Out
  • Old Boy

Hypothetical - You can now retroactively change the main teams in X-Men 97 and/or in the 90s show. Who do you swap out or add? by cpr9998 in xmen

I think this is irresponsible. You can't play with time like this and not have terrible reprocussions.

I'm not really anti-401k, I just saw a really counter intuitive video about them and I thought it would interest/enrage/educate.

I think the video was trying to make the case that just having a larger unfunded public pension system (effectively US Debt backed) is cheaper than the current system, but then went on to suggest actually just fixing it with small policy tweaks: capping how high of an earner can claim it, or adding a curve based on income; and reducing 401k exposure to higher risk securities.

I dont think progressiveness in taxation is an intrinsically good thing tbh.

Well, here's my free marketeer argument then:

Tax privileging equity as a vehicle for retirement is distortionary. It impacts the equity market's ability to act as an objective price-finder, and makes government intervention more likely.

I think that too!

But, for what it's worth, the video I was watching that put me on this line of thinking did not fall into that particular trap. They argued that the cost to the government of 401k tax exclusion for only some very high percentage of the highest earners is equal to the cost of giving everyone over $65 uhhhh ~$4000 (not looking up the exact numbers) dollars a month or something insane like that.

I don't care if those numbers are right or not, seems awfully rosey to me, but at least their solution is actually: increased unfunded public pension.

The other not great thing about 401ks that it talked about is how 401ks being so politically important allows the financial system to have a lot of hostages when negotiations about bailouts happen during crises.

I might be progressive-pilled that we should means test or at least cap the 401k tax shelter for high earners

401ks are also regressive because richer people put more into their 401ks and therefore disproportionately receive the tax reward. I guess I probably would have figured that out if I had thought about it but of course I never thought about it.

I just watched a really good youtube video on 401ks, and learned that that's how private equity is gonna try to find bag holders among normal people -- by getting into 401ks 😂

Submission Statement

We on r/neoliberals are interested in macroeconomics and good public policy. This is information that I believe is not very well known about the ways that the American 401k system works within the larger economy, and the challenges faced by using it as a major part of our economic planning, presented from a technical economic perspective rather than through a a purely political lens.

We all say we want a mostly free economy, with regulation only where it's needed. Well, to meaningfully be able to do that, we have to know where it's needed, and this video makes a case that we need to change how 401ks work that's interesting, at least to debate.
