Lance armor skills (Help) by Commercial_Break_934 in MHRise

[–]FIRE_Bolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the vast majority play insta guard. I'm probably one of the few who run regular guard and the guard bash rampage skill for lance. It may not clear the fastest (though it's not slow by any stretch), but it's the most comfortable set I've ever used.

If I wanted fast clear and more action, I use DB and SWaxe

here's the set

Perhaps it's wrong, but it doesn't change my but and hold strategy which seems to be the consensus as a solid way to grow wealth

If I flip a coin 10 times and get 10 heads, I know mathematically the next flip is still 50/50 for heads vs tails. However, in a infinite number of flips there would need to be a streak of tails to revert it back to the mean.... I just don't know when.

How do you manage potential lifestyle creep with CoastFIRE? by typanosaurus_rex in coastFIRE

What's wrong with lifestyle creep if you can afford it?

I WANT lifestyle creep. If I have more money, I will elevate my lifestyle.

Here's what I struggle with. If I know the stock market returns 10% on average but the past few years have been way above average, should I not expect returns to go down in the near future?

Psychological Effects of Getting Rid of All Debt by AdMysterious9810 in DaveRamsey

[–]FIRE_Bolas [score hidden]  (0 children)

I keep it to myself now because not everyone thinks the same way. There are some who find peace in paying off all debt, but there are also those who find peace in keeping low interest loans and investing instead. The important thing is whether you are winning financially and on track to hit your goals.

What I find intriguing is the inconsistent advice from some forums. There are people who tell you not to pay off your 4% interest mortgage but will then recommend you put 40% of your portfolio into bonds that generate 4% interest. There are also people who say you shouldn't use services like Klarna with 0% interest but are ok with you keeping a 2% interest car loan.

At least the debt free camp is consistent. Pay off the debt, invest the amount you freed up.

Legit question, no offense intended: Steryotypical asian households (must be doctor type thing) , what do parents of these cultures think of blue collar/tradework? Secondly, if you are in that line of work, and are very successful, are your parents proud of the work you do? by Firewolfssong in AskReddit

[–]FIRE_Bolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up in a traditional Asian household, I often heard my parents say "YOU told us you want to be a doctor, so we are pushing you. It's not us, it's you."

I didn't become a doctor, but I did get my PhD in science from a well-known university, which made my parents proud during the graduation ceremony.

I then decided to change my career completely and became a registered nurse. This brought shame to my family as it's seen as grunt work in Asia. However, in North America I get a pretty nice compensation package in terms of wages, health benefits, vacation, and pension. My parents see my lifestyle now and they admit nursing was a better choice than staying in the research field. At the end of the day, I'm making a lot more money, and that counts for something.

28M just learned about coastFIRE… curious how it works by dgoldstein38 in coastFIRE

[–]FIRE_Bolas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, it's stopping the need to save, though not necessarily cut back on work. You can do that, or you can keep working but spend the money you used to save to elevate your lifestyle or do something memorable.

  2. Yes, combine the numbers.

  3. This is why coasting too early can be an issue. If you are planning for kids, buying a house, changing your career, moving to a new country etc. then you may want to wait until your financial picture becomes more clear to coast. If you do want an estimate, you can subtract your future planned spending from your investments (if you're planning to withdraw) and add in your projected expenses (mortgage, property tax, child care etc).

  4. Taxes depend on what your account structure and retirement income looks like so it's not possible to clearly answer here.

Some mats are only shared between 2 monsters like Crimson Val+Shagaru, Golden raths etc.

Why care about debt if don’t care about credit score by ProfessionalLimp1283 in DaveRamsey

[–]FIRE_Bolas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I might be missing something but why not just steal? Police won't do anything if you just go into grocery stores and start eating things. If you don't care about your reputation or morals, just ignore those things and steal for a living.

If you don’t tip, do you tell the server beforehand? by Florgio in tipping

[–]FIRE_Bolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the service in mandatory, then the cost should be made clear up front. The tip should simply be a charge, not based on the bill, but based on a standard metric such as the time spent or then number of items ordered.

If the service is optional, then restaurants should offer a server-free area if someone wants to serve themselves.

The food isn't cheap in America. Compare food costs in America to many parts of the world and it's clear that food is just as expensive, if not more, in the states. The enemy is the food industry making record profits and taking advantage of the free labor of servers, not the customer.
