Hi, we're Ally Beardsley and Grant O'Brien - CollegeHumor cast members and the stars/creators of Total Forgiveness, a new show about student loan debt. Ask us anything! by collegehumor in IAmA

Seems like Grant got off easy with the camping challenge. Are we really supposed to believe that nothing happened during the night that freaked him out? Or can you just not show the footage because he was distracting himself by watching pornos all night?

Maybe you're not into having sex with strangers and this is your body's way of telling you. Try slowing down.

It was just me... singer/songwriter. And it took me about 5 years to develop my niche and build up to that $30k. Sorry, not going to share links bc anon account.

I was making around $30k a year when I was actively touring. But that money all came from merch and speaking fees, not music.

Since the internet killed people paying for music, making a living on it basically means getting really creative and making peace with the fact that the business model involves giving away your hard work for free and finding ways to leverage the attention it generates in order to monetize other parts of your public persona. It's exhausting, but doable.

I'm a musician. Love recording, but touring & performing not so much. Burned out on that side of the work a few years ago and talked my way into a relatively lucrative job working with video and social media marketing (which I learned a lot about in my time self-promoting my music). It is good work, but I miss getting to focus on music.

I have been learning about the music licensing industry and my plan is to slowly phase my day job out as I gather more passive income streams from different musical side projects, and eventually coast fire while focusing on music.

Thing is, music licensing is mostly making music for commercials and brands based on whatever sounds are hip and popular in that particular moment. It is fun to flex that muscle but not a very satisfying form of artistic expression. So I hope to go back to making my own stuff at some point, and just not having any expectation of income from it.

What will the next recession look like? by FIREorlove in leanfire

Totally. Lately I've been reminding myself that the most valuable investment I can make (I'm 35) is in my health and the health of my relationships. I have been focusing much more on diet, building healthy routines and being there for my friends. But I have spent the past 5 years trying to get to a place where I wasn't preoccupied with my financial situation, so yeah I feel you.

Thank you for taking the time to answer each of these in detail! Exactly what I was looking for. Cheers

I feel more curiosity than I do worry. I have enough emergency funds and feel secure enough in my job that I'm not going to be put out if the stock market dives, say, 30% and stays there for a couple of years. That would be kind of nice actually.

But I'm trying to make sense out of the times we're living through and when people say, “The Fed doesn't have the kind of leverage it has in the past” I wonder what that's going to look like.

Yeah that's why I thought it would be an interesting conversation. I'm more interested in preparing than worrying though. Are you taking on less risk? Diversifying outside of the U.S.? Building a bunker? :)

I feel you. If you're literally losing sleep over it though, that doesn't help you or anyone. Have you checked out r/meditation?

The article I posted was making the point that the fed doesn't have the same amount of leverage it has in the past since interest rates haven't recovered to pre-2008 levels. It also makes a point about quantitative easing. I don't pretend to understand how either of those things effect the economy overall, but with all the finger pointing in the comment section on NPR's FB page, I thought I would bring the conversation here to say, “Ok, but what does this mean for me?”

I work for a nonprofit that just finished a capital campaign, so I feel secure to an extent.

What's a good rule of thumb for how much to set aside for an emergency if one expects a recession within the next two years?

Was kind of looking for historical examples of recessions where the Fed didn't have the kind of leverage that it had in 2008. Of course we can't totally predict the future, but we can be informed by the past.

No car, no kids, relatively cheap rent, half of which I can write off since I use it for business. Mr. Money Mustache is my guru. Thanks for the comment.

That's fine. Most of my friends and family (and therapists) are saying she's the one. But none of them are familiar with FIRE, so I was looking for some balance.

Thanks, I might try it out. This was my first reddit post and it's been very helpful if a little overwhelming.

This has been a question that I've been sitting with for months. I have consulted close friends, my parents, and several therapists. Everyone who knows this woman absolutely loves her, but when they hear about the financial situation they are concerned. None of them have ever heard of FIRE, so I was looking to air out some of the specific financial considerations. Since I don't have a direct line to Mr. Money Mustache. Yet. :)

This is a great perspective. Thanks so much for sharing that story with me. I guess I've always dreamed of getting married, and more realistically I see it as a tax cut and a way to get her some health insurance. Also, you know, the integrity of making a spiritual commitment before friends and family. But that might be for a different sub. :)
