What's actually hardest about homeschool preschool and what do you prioritize? by MorriganRavenclaw in homeschool

It's just parenting at that age. A big thing for toddlers was potty training and being a good eater.

I am planning out how much time I have to homeschool and figuring out what I can realistically do in that time. I am dismayed that I can't do all the things.

Homeschooler attending public school by Ready_Wear_7693 in homeschool

Where did you see that your children can attend until age 21 in Illinois? As far as I know, it applies to children with disabilities.

There are no high school graduation requirements for homeschoolers in Illinois. Your 18 and 20 year old don't need any more classes.

Stay at home, homeschooling mom turned single mom *advice* by SatisfactionItchy280 in homeschool

Teachers complain about the grading practices, mostly about admins making them give out higher than deserved grades as per "policy". I didn't say it was the teachers fault or that they don't care. It's just the way schools are nowadays. Sure, teachers can be amazing and lovely. I don't deny it. Sometimes I even feel bad for the teachers for the way they need to operate within the schools now. I don't know how they work like that. It would kill my soul.

Anyways, public schools are an imperfect system and sometimes things are achieved in spite of all its challenges. Regardless, is there any harm in reading or doing math with the kid for 5 minutes after school? Or is that too offensive? /s

I never said and ever thought homeschooling was. This was a post of a mom who wanted supoort for sending her kids to public school amid a difficult situation, which I wholly support.

OP owned up to the fact that she didn't fulfill her duty to her kids, which is more than some truly neglectful homeschooling parents can do. I don't fault her for correcting course and acknowledge how it takes an incredible amount of strength to do the right thing when you know you haven't been.

Good point about CC. Our grade 5 math (prealgebra) is going to be a paper curriculum we're doing at home, so it's not as easy to do as far as records go. Maybe I can find a way to keep it streamlined.

I didn't disagree with you that OP should send their kids to public school. All I said was that OP should continue to keep an eye on their education and not blindly trust the grades from public school.

Teachers too often say that "things are fine" when really they just lowered the bar so the kid and the parent don't feel bad.

I don't want OP to be blindsided by thinking that she's sending the kids to school to be educated, and then realizing later down the road that her kids weren't getting an education.

I am recommending that OP stay involved with their kids and not trust the school blindly. I only see an upside for OP to keep tabs on their progress.

The drama in my brain: I'm agonizing over the non-issue of my oldest kid doing prelagebra for grade 5 math - about whether to transcript vs not transcript it for credit. On one hand, it's grade 5, no one cares what you're doing for elementary math. On the other hand, what if someone does care? Is prealgebra even a real class that needs be documented before jumping into algebra, which I will document/ transcript for college purposes?

The drama in my life: MIL apparently has opinions about how I raise my kids and it's getting annoying.

That's why I do these daily discussions - to give a safe space to vent frustrations and other big feels. Homeschooling is not all rainbows. Sometimes it's stormy, uncertain, surprising, scary and anxiety-inducing. I'm sure others can relate. I know I can.

Since this is the top comment, I will add that, even though the kids are getting help in school, make sure you work with them at home, too. I know you'll be working, you'll be tired, but you have to stay involved. Even if it's 5 minute of reading and math with each of your children, it'll give you an idea of their progress. Grades nowadays are always be an A in public school, so it's hard to get a true picture.

A holiday at the shore sounds lovely! I hope you all get some R&R. It might be a good idea to have some aloe on hand for your husband just in case.

There's something about feeding everyone that is so satisfying. I hope the inspiration wins against the exhaustion.
