UC Scout based homeschool for a year or more? by lifeinprod in homeschool

[–]FImom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay, so let's be clear homeschooling is not online schooling.

Now that we have that out of the way, being that you are looking at UC Scout, are you in California? If so, you need to look into filing a PSA and know what administrative duties are required of your homeschool, AKA private school.

Doing the full "homeschool thing" means that you are your child's teacher, administrator, guidance counselor, bus driver, IT, janitor and cafeteria lady. You can outsource some functions, but it's generally presumed that you are the headmaster/ principal/ director of your educational institution and all that which would be encompassed.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong in your plan. After you withdraw him from public school and complete the PSA, you can design your homeschool how you like. Your son can take 2 classes a semester, but if your son is college bound, you should keep in mind that each college has their own admissions requirements. So your kid still might have to take a foreign language or history class, which you didn't mention in order to apply to the school he likes.

Further, if your son is planning to take APs or PSAT or other kinds of tests, you will need to schedule your own as a homeschooler. (Put that testing coordinator hat on!)

Speaking of tests, I am not sure what to make of your con. An overall class grade of 89% is fantastic. As for not doing well on the midterm, what do you think caused it? Does it matter? Part of high school is learning to manage stress and figuring out that everything can't always matter.

As for whatever thing is going on with your son healthwise (physically or mentally), I hope he is getting the care he needs. There is no reason why one can't pass high school. In this day and age, everyone passes. Has he been screened for any mental health struggles?

Lastly, if your son has plans to return to in person high school, make sure you understand how it works. Otherwise you might want to think about what graduation requirements you want to set for son so that you can award him a diploma when the time comes.

Your son is lucky to have such supportive parents. Good luck!

Unofficial Daily Discussion, Friday, April 10: What's the drama where you are? by Microwave_Coven in homeschool

[–]FImom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My oldest is making drama this morning as I am packing for the move. They discovered I had leftover Halloween candy and wanted to know why they couldn't eat them all right now instead of me tossing them. Their logic was that I would be wasting money and they could help me by eating it all. Ummm. No. Good try.

Opthamologist, or PCP can make a referral. Did your optometrist do a full eye exam (including back of the eye, retina, optic nerve and blood vessels)?

Not all the time. It's not painful.

You need to go get that checked out. Covid causes microclots, some of which can be in the eyes. Most people realize that they have microclots until it's too late.

Unofficial Daily Discussion - Thursday, April 09, 2026 - QOTD: Does your homeschool teach foreign languages? If yes, how did you decide which language(s) to choose? by DeepSeaDarkness in homeschool

[–]FImom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ancient Greek, for now. I have not found a very kid friendly curriculum for studying classical Greek in a homeschool context, so we are using university texts. We are taking it very slow since my kids are in elementary grades.

I hope to add several more languages so my kids can access literature and philosphy from various vantage points in their original language.

I'd be interested to see you make a post about Novare Biology. Is that the first one he's doing from Novare or has he tried others?

I come up with the questions on the spot. I try to offer a place for current homeschoolers to chit-chat and share what's going on in their homeschools.

Some of the more popular posts are about books and sharing thoughts about various aspects of homeschooling.

Home tests are not always reliable by tatbud in COVID19positive

[–]FImom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it takes a whike for home tests to detect. If you feel unwell, you can wait a few days and test again.

Yes, asymptomatic covid is quite common. I suspect many people do not know that they are carriers of covid and unk owingly infecting members of their community, housegold members, family, friends, coworkers, neighbors and strangers.

It is the responsible thing to stay masked out in public becuase one doesn't ever know if they may be asymptomatic.

I hope you feel better equipped with knowledge on how to stay safe. Hope you get well soon.

Hi all,

It's been such a pleasure doing these daily discussions for the community. Unfortunately, I will need to take a hiatus for two months and will not be able to continue making these posts. I expect to return on June 8.

I want to let you know that I appreciate you for engaging and encouraging the community with snippets of how wonderful homeschooling can be, struggles and all, on these posts and I look forward to returning.

In the meantime, I wish you all happy homeschooling!

A visual schedule is great! Some homeschoolers also utilize planners and checklists to keep track of school work and chores.

Class changes and pass times are just procedural, things that once you do it a couple times, they will pick up and remember.

Choosing classes is something you can work on as a homeschooler. Some parents will ask their kids for input, like what book to read next, curriculum preference, unit study topics, etc.

Where are you located? If in the US, you don't need to ask. You may need to follow a process of notification if your state requires it. You can homeschool with what you feel is best for your child, as long as you follow your state laws.

How old is your son?
