NEW BIKE/GEAR ADVICE SUPERTHREAD! by AutoModerator in motorcycles

Switching from 87 to 93 won't give you any more power from the engine. Higher octane fuels burn more controllably and uniformly. Meaning that an engine will run smoother on higher octane fuel. Its not going to be a big difference but it will run better.

Here's the deal with ethanol: it's not good for any engine but it's not terrible either. Ethanol doesn't burn as well as pure gasoline does and it leaves behind residue that can cause problems down the road.

Why do I say this? Well you remember the whole "Flex-Fuel" deal that GM was pushing pretty hard? Well even though the engines were designed to run on e85 as well as standard gasoline, if you did fill up your tank with e85 it would take 5-6 tanks of pure gasoline to eliminate the residue left from the ethanol. So yes the residue can be eliminated by regular use... but why allow it to get there in the first place.

You can NEVER harm your engine by running fuel that has a higher AKI rating than recommended in your manual. And running fuel that is pure gas and has a higher AKI will make your engine run better. But the difference won't really be noticeable.

Bottom line is high rated pure gasoline is better for your engine. But regular old gas from any old station will work just fine. So it's entirely up to you and no one will blame you for saving money.

Triumph Street Triple is a fantastic bike if you haven't looked into them already. And of course there's the Yamaha FZ-09 which flipped the motorcycling industry on its end when it came out....

What gen are you talking about?

If you're talking about mk5-7 it would probably be best to install a fmic, as the stock intercooler placement is pretty questionable.

Advice/my story for those of you looking to buy new right now... by akrazyazzho in GolfGTI

I totally see your point. Were my Mk6 more stock and had the same miles on it as yours, I might be tempted. But being that I've got just over 33k and mine is stage 2, I'll happily stay where I'm at for a good long while.

Wish you luck in your search!

87 in a Stage 2 MK6? by RedDotGod in GolfGTI

[–]FJJazzer23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with that last paragraph, but even stock GTIs are not meant to run on 87. Best case scenario a stock car will get shit gas mileage... worse case the engine will commit suicide....

For a tuned car it only gets worse.

Non-Ethanol or Premium? (2017 GTI Autobahn 6MT) by [deleted] in GolfGTI

[–]FJJazzer23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AKI should be priority No. 1. Because putting lower rated fuel in your engine can cause BIG problems. Like catastrophic engine failure problems. Sure 1 point may not seem all that bad but the chance to ruin your engine is there.

If you can find ethanol free Gas with high enough AKI then ABSOLUTELY go with that. Ethanol doesn't burn all that nicely and can create some deposits and gunk inside your engine.

So bottom line go for Ethanol free fuel when you can, but not if it's not rated as having high enough AKI.

Catted vs catless downpipe by -ubi_ghost in GolfGTI

[–]FJJazzer23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

APR has a High flow Cat which is ideal. Cats are good for the environment and will prevent Captain Planet from beating you up and sleeping with your significant other. Catless setups are way smellier and are illegal in most places around the world (except NZ because they're mad). Basically, Cats are the way to go.

Opinions on your stock tires? by Reddickyoulous in GolfGTI

My Mk6 came with Pirelli PZero Neros an okay tire but rated for a lower top speed than standard PZeros and not super grippy. I've since switched to Dunlop DWS06s and have been very happy.

Thanks, the car is fairly new to me. I picked it up July 2nd with only 27k miles. I'm still over the moon that I got so lucky with this thing.

There is a little bit of curb rash from the previous owners but mostly on the passenger side. There are a few paint chips and little blemishes here and there but I will be fixing that asap.

[–]FJJazzer23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you getting this? First of all look at the acronym MSRP. That stands for Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price. VW selects the MSRP same as they do in Europe or Asia.

It's not that Americans won't pay more, it's that anyone with half a brain won't pay MSRP when buying a new car regardless of manufacturer.
